Puja: Hindu Worship
• To explain how Hindus worship (L4-5)
• To describe the ceremony of Puja (L3-4)
• To evaluate the benefits of Puja (L5-7)
How would you treat an honoured guest who arrived after a long journey?
Think of 3 things you would do to honour them.
“Brahman is present in everything so Hindus treat their idols like honoured guests arriving after a long journey..”
Light an incense stick to make the room smell nice
Offer food & drink eg fruit, sweets, milk.
Light a candle/ oil lamps and perform Arti.
Tikka - put a spot of red paste on their gods’ and their own foreheads
Do an OM meditation
Announce the arrival of the guest – by ringing a bell

During Puja, Hindus bless themselves with good things- The warmth and light of a
candle, by passing their hands over it, then over themselves
- The purity and life-giving power of water, by sprinkling themselves
- The blessing of sharing the food offered to the god
Write a poem or prayer starting with:I bless myself with…Mention each of the 3 things and what they get from them.
**Hindus might do puja up to 6 times a day. Is it worth it ?
