The end of another fabulous school year at
Glenn Gould Public School is quickly
approaching. At this time, we look back
and celebrate all of the successes and
accomplishments of our students and staff
and take the opportunity to thank and
congratulate our entire school community
for working together to support our
students. Glenn Gould P.S. is a true
community and the school serves as a
central focal point for the community to
come together. Our school is a very
special place and those who work and
learn here are very fortunate.
When we look back over the year, we
remember some events such as: author
visits, character/tribes assemblies, and
more opportunities for our students to
demonstrate their talents and skills.
Among all of these activities, our amazing
staff still maintains a focus and high
standard for student achievement in
academics, the arts and athletics. This is
all accomplished with the continued support
of parents and other community members.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who
participate in helping us continue to form a
learning community called Glenn Gould
Public School.
I am pleased to inform you that for the
fourth year in a row, Glenn Gould Public
School will be certified as an Eco School.
We are hoping that we have earned Gold
Certification this year! Thank you to our
ECO team which consists of students and
staff for all of the hard work and dedication
in the pursuit of ecological literacy. It is
also through the community’s support of
boomerang lunches and using reusable
containers that has helped us achieve this
level.
Over the past decade, changes in the
Earth’s environment and its natural
systems have emerged as a matter of
increasingly urgent concern around the
diverse, there is a shared and universal recognition
that solutions will arise only through committed
action on a global, national, regional, local, and
individual scale. Schools have a vital role to play in
preparing our young people to take their place as
informed, engaged and empowered citizens who
will be pivotal in shaping the future of our
communities, our province, our country, and our
global environment.
The last day of school is Thursday, June 26.
Students will be dismissed at 11:55 a.m.
There is no school for students
in the afternoon.
Character Trait for June is
“Optimism”
In order to keep students safe cars should be
parked on the side streets as there is extremely
limited room in our school parking lot. Please park
your car first, then walk your child to the door.
Please DO NOT stop, park or remain in your car in
the parking lot loop. The parking lot loop is for quick
drop off and not for parking. This is creating a
safety hazard for both the vehicles and for our
parents and students.
Another area of particular concern is the area by
the beginning of the bus loop. Students are being
dropped off there and the cars are whizzing by very
fast also creating a safety hazard. Students can be
dropped off further down Vellore Park Ave. and
walk on the sidewalk to the school. We appreciate
your understanding and support for maintaining
and promoting safety at Glenn Gould Public
School.

Thursday June 26, 2014 only. Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:55 a.m.
Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bussed to and from school will

School Climate Survey for Parents/Guaradians
Congratulations to our Grade 8s!
We have reached the time of year when our Grade 8
students have completed option forms for secondary
school and are working towards their last term in
elementary school.
Our expectations are that grade 8 students work to their potential to
achieve academic success for the final term’s report card. As well,
they should be displaying mature, responsible behaviour to act as a
model for students in lower grades. Many activities have been
planned to better prepare them for the transitional phase to high
school.
Look for a Graduation Invitation and tickets in early June.

School Council
A Big Thank You goes out to our
Parent Council for their hard
work in supporting Glenn Gould
Public School. They have
worked effortlessly to promote our School Plan
for Continuous Improvement through educational
and financial support. The last meeting was held
on May 27 at 6:30 p.m.
We look forward to another school year together.
If you would like to be part of our school council,
please contact us in September 2014. Grade 8 Graduation
Date: June 23
The Eco team has had a busy year promoting all of the environmental school initiatives. The school participated in the "Sweater Challenge",
where we wore a sweater to promote using less heat energy during the winter, we walked to school, we collected garbage during "Operation clean-up", we planted seeds, we collected milk bags to be woven into blankets for countries in need, we participated in earth hour by shutting off any non-essential lights for an hour and everyone engaged in environmental based lessons in their classrooms. What a fantastic year!! Thank you to everyone for making an effort and helping the environment.
Over the summer continue your environmental efforts by picking up garbage, turning off lights or electronics when not in use and reduce your water usage where possible. Working as a community will make an even bigger impact on the environment.
Walk to School
Congratulations to Ms. Monsier's class who had the most walkers during our Spring "Walk to School Challenge". Over 470 students walked to school over the 4 days of the challenge. Great work everyone!! Keep walking over the summer as it is great exercise and helps to reduce pollution.
Glenn Gould Public School participates in the Roots of Empathy program,
which invites a parent and a baby to visit the classroom throughout the
school year in order to help teach empathy, which helps to reduce bullying
and aggression among school age children.
If you know someone who is expecting a baby in the
months of June, July or August and may be interested in
participating in the program, please let us know.
Anyone interested can contact

First Day of School
Tuesday, September 2, 2014
If your child will not be in attendance on the first day of
school in September, please notify the school office at
905-417-4517.
Students who will be absent on extended vacations in
September are required by the Ministry of Education Bill 52
to complete a form indicating their expected return to
school.
Please drop by the office if you require a form.
Bill 52
Students who do not return to school at the end of
vacation periods are required to comply with the following
process to confirm their space in their home school. A form must
be completed indicating the expected dates of absence. Contact
with the school must be made on the 30th day of absence, and
every 15 days after that. Given current accommodation issues and
Ministry of Education class size caps, parents/guardians who do not
respond through this ongoing communication format may be
required to have their child(ren) attend school at an alternate
location which can accommodate them.
South Asian Heritage Month
In May, we celebrate South Asian Heritage Month at Glenn Gould. South Asia is a term that refers to these countries and their peoples: India, Afganistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan. At Glenn Gould, many children represent these countries. They had a chance to get involved by doing Morning Moments, in which they would describe some aspect of their heritage. Siva, a grade 5 student, spoke about his favourite Indian sweets, Gizelle talked about the Farsi language, as well as many other students who got involved. Ms. Tumangday held a contest to see which class could name the most cities in India! It was a tie and the winning class was Ms. Tasciotti and Ms. Schafer’s class.
Michael Wade Author Visit
On May 7th, 2014, author Michael Wade came to Glenn Gould. The students from grade 4
to 6 got to hear his presentation about his funny stories and how ANYONE can become a famous writer. Mr. Wade was very entertaining and the students really enjoyed the presentation. Since then, Michael Wade books have become very popular in the library!
Forest of Reading and Library Appreciation Lunch
On May 22nd
, 2014, Ms. Tumangday held an appreciation Pizza Lunch for several students. This was partly to celebrate the Forest of Reading participants who kept with the programme and read a minimum of 5 books and then voted. The other people who Ms. Tumangday wanted to recognize are the five girls that have been coming every first recess to help her with shelving books. They are Anosha, Giselle, Devala, Juliana and Ayesha.
Thank you very much for helping our school library!
FROM THE LIBRARY
ARE YOU LEAVING
EARLY FOR
SUMMER HOLIDAYS ?
Please let the school office and the homeroom teacher know if your child is leaving on holidays before the end of the school year. Please leave a large (8½ x 11) self-addressed stamped enve-lope with the office indicating where you would like us to mail the report card.
ATTENTION PARENTS
Are you interested in volunteering in the classroom, or on a school field trip?
If so, you will need to provide the school with a Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check). This
Screening is valid for one school year. Any parent who does not complete a Police Screening, will NOT be permitted to join their child(s) classroom on any field trip throughout the year if chosen to volunteer.
Please pick up a form from our school office, to have it ready for September.

Thank you for your support!
It has been an incredible year for our School Council. We have grown both as a school council and as school. With more
help this year then we have had in the past four years we were able to follow through with more initiatives and
fundraisers then we have ever had. I am often asked what it is that the School Council takes care of. This year’s list
included:
• Pizza/Sub Lunches
• Halloween Dance-a-thon
• The Giving Tree Donation Drive
• Extreme Activity Day/Super Sports Day
• Basket of Fun Raffle
It is our mission to support the school in anyway we can. Whether it is to raise needed funds, or to provide opportunities
for students to learn. The success of every initiative undertaken is dependant on the support and collaboration between
the council, volunteers, school staff, parents and students. Thank you to everyone for your continued support in making
this school year a huge success.
Throughout the year the school council voted on suggested items from our Principal, Ms. Debbie Williams. This year’s
contributions were used to purchase everything from technology, to musical instruments, author visits, to replenishing
activity bins for each classroom and much more. With one last fundraiser, “Basket of Fun Raffle”, we ask for your
support one last time for this school year. Purchase your tickets by June 13th and enter for a chance to win one or more
of the incredible baskets on display in the school lobby. The class that purchases the most tickets will win a free pizza
lunch. The draw will take place on June 20th. Good Luck!
On behalf of the Glenn Gould School Council, I would like to take this opportunity to wish our community a safe and
enjoyable summer. We look forward to a new and exciting school year for 2014/2015.
