The interdisciplinary program is designed to “add-value” to the student’s specific undergraduate degree

program(s) by integrating global competence and knowledge into the student’s disciplinary training. The program will prepare students for the Foreign Service exam and for jobs in the private sector. Students completing the program will be prepared to enter graduate and professional schools.

The program encompasses formal course work, study abroad (or internship), language enrichment, and a global studies senior level capstone emphasizing research on issues and problems affecting the global community and having an impact at the state or local level. Also, the capstone covers modules of the foreign service entry exam. The program is flexible and allows students to focus on a broad range of topics, including:

I. Economics of Global Trade and Policies in AgricultureII. Global Business Initiatives and ImpactIII. LanguagesIV. International Development in AgricultureV. Global HealthVI. Natural ResourcesVII. Global Environment and Climate ChangeVIII. Global Political SystemsIX. International Development OrganizationsX. Plus others

Certificate of Global Perspectives

Study abroad offers students exciting opportunities to live and learn in another country for at least

one semester or summer term while earning academic credits towards a degree at Alcorn State University. Participants are required to be full-time students at the foreign University in programs administered by ASU exchanges or U.S. based and approved study abroad providers. Students wishing to study abroad via direct enrollment or otherwise should follow the subsequent steps to the right:

1. Go to the website of the Office of Global Programs at: alcorn.edu/globalprograms2. Search ASU affiliated study abroad providers or universities for courses in your major3. Select study abroad courses based on requirements in your major4. Print course syllabi/descriptions, if available online5. Check the cost of the selected program and compare to your financial aid award6. Meet with study abroad advisor to fill out the required Title IV forms (bring unofficial transcripts and degree program sheet to the meeting)

Certificate Requirements

I. Global Core Courses: (6 credit hours) GP 499 Global Issues and Foreign Service Prep. + One course from the following list (IA 302; AE 488; BA 303; MK 303; FI 321; IA 482; GT 318; GT 445; HI 432; HI 433; HI 447; HI 448; GR 318).

II. Global Programs and Departmental Approved Electives (6 credit hours) Includes approved study abroad, internationally- related internships or departmental electives.

III. Foreign Language Requirement (3 credit hours) Select one of the following (requires advisor’s approval) – SP 111; SP 112; SP 213; GP 101; GP 102; GP 211; GP 212; GP 213; GP 214; GP 215; GP 216; GP 217; GP 218; FR 111; FR 112.

IV. Cultural Studies (3 credit hours) Select one of the following: ED 200; A course in the culture and society of a study abroad host country; Any course in intercultural communication.

V. Co-Curricular Activities (Non-Credit) Check with Global Studies Certificate Advisor.
