This three-day International Conference on Nath Panth is a humble attempt to study its various dimensions and also to account for it popularity amongst the masses.

To trace the origin and antiquity of Nath Panth is certainly not easy. The word 'Nath' has been used in the Rig Veda to refer to the creator of this Universe, the Almighty and also for the Universe itself. According to the traditional belief of Nathpanth, MahaYogi Guru Gorakhnath is omnipresent and eternal, but historically He is

th thbelieved to have appeared between the 7 to 13 century. After Shankaracharya, MahaYogi Guru Gorakhnath is the most influential and epoch-making personality.

About the Conference

In the persona of the honorable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanathji, one can see the embodiment of Shri Goraksh Peeth's ideals of public welfare.

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University has the status of being the first University to be establ ished in Uttar Pradesh after the independence of India. Since its inception, this University has played an important role in maintaining the religious, cultural and social values of this region.

It has long been the aspiration among the intellectuals of Gorakhpur that an international study center be established to disseminate the philosophy, universal principles and ideas of Nathpanth amongst the masses. It was with this objective that the Mahayagi Guru Gorakshnath Shodhpeeth was established in the year 2018 in the University.

The highest establishment of Nath Panth is Shri Gorakhnath Temple in the city of Gorakhpur, which has been the tapobhoomi of Mahayogi Shri Gorakhnath. It is here that he embraced Samadhi. The Mahants (chief priest) of Shri Gorakhshnath Peeth have made unprecedented contribution in building a harmonious society and in providing prudent political leadership.

For centuries, the yogis and sadhaks of Nath Panth had been trying to erase social evils through religion and yoga. The civilization, culture, life, knowledge, philosophy, religious practices and literature of India are permeated with the philosophy and ideals of Nath Panth. Along with this it also continues to provide direction and guidance towards developing India into Greater India.

• To look for sources of cultural unity through tourist routes and places associated with Nath Panth.

Objectives of the Conference

• To study the various dimensions of Nath Panth and also to highlight its popularity amongst the masses.

• To deliberate on the unexplored areas of Indian Yoga tradition and Nath Panth, and also assess its social relevance and benefits for the people.

• To deliberate on the philosophy and literature of Nath Panth.

• To study the glorious history of Nath Panth and foreground its role in nation building.

• To outline the role of Nath Panth in building a harmonious society.

• To explore the social, cultural and scientific dimensions of Nath Panth.

The three-day International Conference is divided mainly into the following five sections:

Conference Sections

The concept of Yoga in India is ancient. Atharvaveda mentions the acquiring of mystical and spiritual powers through Yoga. In Kath, Taitiriya and Maitrayani Upanishads, the term yoga has been categorically defined. In Maitrayani Upanishad, we find a description of shandag yoga. Both Jain and Budhhist religions believe in the practical dimensions of yoga. In the yoga philosophy of Maharishi Patanjali, ideas of Vikirn Yoga have been compiled in a scientific manner. With the passage of time, MahaYogi Guru Gorakhnath, the incarnat ion of Lord Shiva disseminated the tenets of Nath Panth amongst the masses. The background of his thoughts was 'Chaitanya's lokatit samadhyavyavastha'. According to him there is no distinction between Shakti and Shiva. Shakti represents centrifugal force whereas Shiva represents the centripetal force. Whoever is able to establish a union between the two becomes a Siddha

Yogiraja. Under this section, various aspects of the philosophy of Nath Panth shall be discussed. This section of the Conference proposes to deliberate on the unexplored areas of Yoga on the one hand and on the other it will also assess its social relevance and benefits for the people.

Philosophy, Literature and Nath PanthA new era begins in the Hindu religion and

philosophy with MahaYogi Guru Gorakhnath. Like Adi Shankaracharya, his role in Indian religious practices and literature is pivotal. Guru Gorakhnath occupies a place of eminence amongst the contemporary preachers and philosophers. The edifice of Indian philosophy rests on the teachings of Guru Gorakhnath. The Sage tradition of India is indebted to Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath. He has the distinction of having discovered the various paths to the realization of the Ultimate Truth. He devised new techniques of meditation and religious practices. Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath possessed a unique personality and his philosophy is extant and complete in itself. From the philosophical perspective of Nath Panth, Pind (individual body) and the Universe have been treated as analogous. Shankaracharya claimed Brahma as Truth and the world as a delusion. Contrary to this, Guru Gorakhnath established moral and practical principles for the realization of the Universe through the realization of the Pind. The knowledge traditions of

Nath Panth glitter like gold when placed amongst the innumerable philosophies and literatures, and can provide the way of deliverance from the problems and challenges of life.

It emerges in his writings that Guru Gorakhnath's philosophy is that of a Yogi who through Sadhana led to cultural enrichment and contributed to the development of a tolerant society based on exchanges of ideas and views. While the Guru was imparted supreme significance, he also laid emphasis on the purity of inner being not just for the Yogi but the entire humanity. He lit the torch of Bhakti movement and for this the Bhakti movement and Hindi Bhakti literature will remain indebted to Shri Yogi Gorakhnath.

Nationalist Thought, Nation Building and Nath PanthIn the Indian context, the word “Rashtra” (Nation) is inherent in the word “Matribhoomi” (Motherland). India has long been struggling with a Western model of Nation that in no way can be considered an adequate expression of the idea of Nation. However, the notion of Nation always existed in its basic concept in India. This was possible due to the significant role of the spiritual founders of the nation who kept the basic principles of nation secure. Nath Panth played an important role in nation building by reaching out to the masses and binding the society in a common thread. By maintaining social harmony along with a cultural consciousness in the entire subcontinent, the Nath Panth played a great role in nation building by transcending all differences of caste and community. There is an inherent need within the academic world to compile the glorious history of the role of Nath Panth in nation building. This Section of the Conference shall be a humble attempt to explore this role of Nath Panth.
