Global perspectives on the ecology of invasive alien species: people, policy and nature
Helen Roy and many more
Non-Native (= Alien) Species
Henosepilachna argus
Species introduced (aided by humans) outside native range
Invasive Non-Native Species
Harmonia axyridis
Non-Native Species that threatens biodiversity, ecosystems or the way we live
Hottentot fig…home and away
Predation and competition leads to declines of native ladybirds
Roy et al (2012) Diversity and Distributions 18: 717-725
without harlequin
with harlequin- Competition- Predation
= 44% decline in distribution
Adverse effects on ecosystem function and resilience?
25% of first records during 2000–2005 were of species that had not been previously recorded anywhere as alien

Invasive Non-Native Species in context
@AlienCSI1
• 1506 established non-native plants
• 469 established non-native animals
• 273 established non-native species designated as having negative ecological or human impact:
– 101 (6.7%) established non-native plants
– 172 (36.7%) established non-native animals

Closing thought …Where are all the microbes?
The list excluded garden plants, cultivated crops, pests of stored crops, human parasites and pests of human habitation unless they were thought likely to be foundin the wild. Microorganism (with the
exception of a small number of
marine phytoplankton) and
macrofungi were also not included.
Time to think about pathogens…
Invasions and wildlife disease…
