Global Warming- The gradual increase in heat that permanently effects
Earth’s overall temperature.Ex: glaciers melting, greenhouse gas rising
Civilian- A person who is not in any military forces or police force.
Ex: lawyer, students, dollar store employees
Military Coup- Soldiers in a country acting to overthrow and replace its
government
Outsourcing- Obtain (good or a service) from an outside or foreign
supplier especially in places of an internal source.
Ex: accounting, tax preparation, computer programming
Censorship- Officially examining and suppressing unacceptable parts from movies, books TV shows, etc.
Ex: Inappropriate language
Communism- A political theory leading to a society in which property is
publicly owned and each person works and is paid to their needs and abilities. Derived from Karl Marx.Ex: China and Cuba
Cap and Trade- A regulatory system that is used to reduce certain types of
emissions.Ex: acid rain program, regional NOx Budget Trading Program, and
the Clean Air Interstate rule
Cyber Warfare- An internet based conflict involving politically motivated
attacks on information and information systems.Ex: The Tulip Revolution II, the Russia-Georgia War, The Jasmine

Human Rights- the rights that belong to all people regardless of age,
religion, ethnicity, etc.Ex: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
Intelligent Design-The theory that life, or the universe, cannot have arisen
by chance and was designed and created by some intelligent entity.
Ex: A God, space aliens, people from the future
A program put into effect to avoid discrimination in the workplace. Affirmative action is targeted to minorities.

Universal health care (sometimes referred to as universal health coverage, universal coverage, or universal care) usually refers to a health care system which provides health care and financial protection to all citizens of a particular country.

School Vouchers
A policy used to let gays, lesbians, and bisexuals into the U.S. military. The policy would not allow openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual individuals serve. It was repealed in December of 2010.
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
International treaty to avert the spread of nuclear weapons and nuclear weapons technology and to advocate cooperation in the use of nuclear energy.
Countries agree not to receive, manufacture, acquire, or seek assistance to manufacture nuclear weapons.

foreign investments. • A measure of economic output (health) in a country.
• Ex: in 2014, the Gross Domestic Output in the United States was $17.419 trillion dollars.
• Developing vs. Developed Countries• Developing: high birth rate, high death rate, low living
standards, poor economy• Developed: low birth rate, low death rate, growing
economy, advanced technology
• Civil Liberties• A right that cannot be taken away or interfered by the
government; guaranteed by law• Ex: the United Sates Bill of Rights
• Two-Party vs. One-Party System• Two-Party: A form of government where parties compete and
give voters a wider range of choices.• One-Party: Voters only have one choice!
• Ex: USA- highly developed democratic and republic systems where citizens vote for personal interest. Cuba- Communist party of Cuba in 1959 exists with a Demi-presidential system, and only one party exists for voters.
• Apartheid• A policy or system of segregation or discrimination on the grounds of race.
• Ex: Society where the white race is considered superior and people of other races are mistreated. Segregation and the discrimination of African Americans throughout history.
• Immigrant vs. Migrant• A person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.
• Immigrant enters into a country, migrant moves out of a country
• Stem Cell Research• research of cells in the body that can adapt and change into diverse cells
• Ex: Altering genes to make the resistant to disease then inserting them into a person with the disease. Injecting modified stem cells into the brain after a stroke, or into the eyes to restore vision after an injury.
• Kyoto Protocol• UN convention on climate change that commits states to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions.
Theocracy vs. Democracy
Theocracy vs. Democracy: The argument about whether a government by the people and for the people (democracy) or a government ruled by leaders with religious authority (theocracy) is better.
EX: Iran is a theocracy. USA is a democracy.
Jihad
A struggle in devotion to Islam or against non-believers of IslamHoly war to spread Islam (extreme definition practiced by ISIS, Al-
Qaeda)

AU: African Union• an organization in Africa that supports the growth of the
continent’s economics and politics in the continent.
EU: European Union• an organization in Europe that aims to exceed in the economics
and politics in the continent.
UN: United Nation• an international organization created to promote peace with other
nations throughout the world.
The DREAM Act (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minor)• A legislative proposal for undocumented immigrants in the U.S. that
would grant conditional residency, then permanent residency if they met further qualifications.

One Child Policy
• The People’s Republic of China created the one child policy to aid in population control.

• A capitalistic economic system in which there is free competition and prices are determined by the interaction of supply and demand.
• Examples: USA
No Child Left Behind Act (2001, NCLB)
• NCLB act requires public schools in the United States to give ALLL students equal learning opportunities.• Gives the government total control of public education (testing,
funding, etc.)
• Example: Students who are minority, in poverty, receiving special education services and those who speak/understand little or no English.
Domino Theory
• The theory that political events happening in one country will trigger effects in the countries nearby.
• Example: The Cold War (causing was after war)
