It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE The Standardization of Pharmaceuticals: Despite the professional skill and integrity of 19th-century pharmacists, seldom did two preparations of vegetable drugs have the same strength, even though prepared by identical processes. Plant drugs varied widely in active alkaloidal and glucosidal content. The first answer to this problem came when Parke, Davis & Company introduced standardized "Liquor Ergotae Purificatus" in 1879. Dr. Albert Brown Lyons, as the firm's Chief Chemist, further developed methods of alkaloidal assay. Messrs. Parke and Davis recognized the value of his work, and in 1883, announced a list of twenty standardized "normal liquids." Parke-Davis also pioneered in developing pharmacologic and physiologic standards for pharmaceuticals.

of proteins critical in DNA repair: (17th April, 2015) By combining two highly innovative experimental techniques, scientists have for the first time simultaneously observed the structure and the correlated function of specific proteins critical in the repair of DNA, providing definitive answers to some highly debated questions, and opening up new avenues of inquiry and exciting new possibilities for biological engineering.

Fruit fly studies shed light on adaptability of nerve cells: (17th April, 2015) Neurons in the eye change on the molecular level when they are exposed to prolonged light, new research demonstrates. The researchers could identify that a feedback signalling mechanism is responsible for these changes. The innate neuronal property might be utilized to protect neurons from degeneration or cell death in the future.

Mouth, as well as gut, could hold key to liver disease flare-ups: (17th April, 2015) In a recent study, researchers predicted which cirrhosis patients would suffer inflammations and require hospitalization by analyzing their saliva, revealing a new target for research into a disease that accounts for more than 30,000 deaths in the United States each year.

New genetic mutation could signal start of malaria drug resistance in Africa: (17th April, 2015) Early indicators of the malaria parasite in Africa developing resistance to the most effective drug available have been confirmed, according to new research. Investigators found Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites with a mutation to the gene Ap2mu were less sensitive to the antimalarial drug artemisinin.

DNA blood test detects lung cancer mutations: (17th April, 2015) Cancer DNA circulating in the bloodstream of lung cancer patients can provide doctors with vital mutation information that can help optimize treatment when tumor tissue is not available, an international group of researchers has reported.

New studies about endovascular therapy for stroke represent paradigm shift: (17th April, 2015) An expert who writes an accompanying editorial for five studies about endovascular stroke therapy published simultaneously in the New England Journal of Medicine says these randomized clinical trials represent a breakthrough in showing the benefits of endovascular therapy for acute ischemic strokes.

To fight nasty digestive bugs, scientists set out to build a better gut – using stem cells: (17th April, 2015) If you’ve ever been hit with an ‘intestinal bug’, you’ve felt the effects of infectious microbes on your digestive system. But scientists don’t fully understand what’s going on in gut infections like that – or in far more serious ones. Now, a team of scientists will tackle that issue in a new way.

Effectiveness of new stroke treatment confirmed: (17th April, 2015) A research paper confirms earlier findings that a procedure called endovascular therapy for ischemic stroke is the best treatment option for many patients by reducing the incidents of disability. This is the fourth research paper published this year that confirms the efficacy of the treatment.

Evidence grows that melanoma drugs benefit some lung cancer patients: (17th April, 2015) A subset of lung cancer patients can derive important clinical benefits from drugs that are more commonly used to treat melanoma, the authors of a new academic clinical trial in Europe have reported.

Experts warn Ebola epidemic could return with a vengeance unless lessons about medical trials are learned: (17th April, 2015) Health experts have warned that a greater flexibility must be brought to medical trials to combat diseases like Ebola to avoid facing another nightmare outbreak. The rapidity and spread of the Ebola outbreak and the urgency of a response led to many challenges not least of which was to advise those managing people on the ground of the best way to treat the illness and which treatments might be effective. Medical experts and academics say: "Even if somehow the present epidemic is eventually contained (over a time course that is currently uncertain), the world will still be largely unprepared for the next epidemic that could strike again at any time in an equally explosive manner." From retching for several hours to pain in her throat every time she swallowed, K Kavitha, a 52-year-old breast cancer survivor grimaces every time she recalls her battle. She felt like her body was being beaten to get the abnormal growth out. "My initial fear of death was numbed by the chemotherapy cycles. At one point, I almost gave up," said Kavitha, a homemaker who was diagnosed in 2005. For most cancer patients, the treatment is as gruelling as the disease. From hair loss to anaemia to nausea, chemotherapy often involves killing of healthy cells along with cancerous ones, with crippling side effects. As people struggle to cope with the physical stress and the emotional trauma of cancer and its treatment, a lab in the department of biotechnology at IIT-Madras has been working for

more than five years to reduce the burden of chemo drugs on the body.

The team has created a class of molecules called immunotoxins to specifically target cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells unaffected. Rama S Verma, who is leading the study, said: "Cancer is characterised by unchecked and rapid cell division. The drugs used in chemotherapy target these cells by interrupting the process of cell division and killing cells in the process." However, other cells, such as those in the bone marrow, hair follicles and lining of the digestive tract, which divide at high rates, are also killed in the process. "Though fraught with side-effects, chemotherapy is still the mainstream treatment simply because it is the only effective method of treatment. We decided to do research on improving the targeting mechanism of the drugs," said Verma. The team began by comparing the outer membranes of normal and cancerous cells that have numerous chemical structures called receptors embedded in them. Hormones and other chemicals are naturally secreted in the body target and bind to these receptors. Each hormone binds only to a single receptor, like a lock and key. The team, after surveying blood samples of leukemia patients, found a receptor that is more prominently present in cancerous cells and engineered an immunotoxin to target tumour cells. While the toxin part of the immunotoxin in is traditionally derived from many sources-plant, bacteria (diphtheria), fungus or yeast, the team focused on human toxins (proteins that are by products of metabolism) to create the molecules. The next step is clinical studies-producing immunotoxins in large amounts, and testing it on animals, in order to determine the maximum dosage of each immunotoxin that can be administered without causing harm.

The Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion (ADME) of the drug in the animal, and extrapolate the amount required for a human, this plays a very vital role in the development of a formulation and also plays a major role in deciding the route of administration of a drug. The team is waiting for another grant to be cleared so that they can begin mass production and clinical trials, which he expects will take two to three years to complete.

DRUGS UPDATES FDA Approves Corlanor (ivabradine) to Treat

Heart Failure: (15th April, 2015) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Corlanor (ivabradine) to reduce hospitalization from worsening heart failure. Corlanor is approved for use in certain people who have long-lasting (chronic) heart failure caused by the lower-left part of their heart not contracting well. The drug is indicated for patients who have symptoms of heart failure that are stable, a normal heartbeat with a resting heart rate of at least 70 beats per minute and are also taking beta blockers at the highest dose they can tolerate. On 28th February, 2015 Dr. D. Roy, Former Deputy Drug Controller, Mr. Sujoy Chakraborty, divisional Therapy Manager, Cipla and Mr. Vikranjit Biswas, Senior Manager, Learning & Development, Cipla delivered their valuable lectures in the 2nd day FINISHING SCHOOL TRAINING PROGRAMME of GNIPST.
