SELLING A USED MOTORCYCLEIf you already own amotorcycle and have decided to buy abrand-new one from a dealership, you have several options for what to do with your old one. You could keep it, you could trade it in, or you could sell it on the used market. We would like to offer some tips on selling your used motorcycle.

1. Preparing your motorcycle for sale:•Yourbikewillmakeabetter“firstimpression”ifithasbeencleaned and serviced.•Makealistofanyknownproblemsthatyouwillnotbefixing–buyers will appreciate your honesty.• Have the title and registration documents, owner’s manual, and service records set aside for review by potential buyers.•Setasideanyextrakeysandspareparts.

2. Basic seller’s tips for private party motor vehicle transactions:• For privacy and security, consider meeting the buyer in a publicplaceandnotatyourhouse,at least for thefirst timeyou meet.• If youwillbeallowinga test ride, check that thebuyerhasa valid operator’s license, and write down the buyer’s name, address, and driver license number in case of a crash or theft.• You should insist on cash or cashier’s check, and not accept a personal check.• After the sale, let your insurance agent know that the vehicle has been sold.• File a “release of liability” statement with your state’s

department of motor vehicles to indicate that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle and any injury or damage the new owner may cause with it.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR REMOTE BUYERS AND SELLERSIf thebuyerandseller live farapart (perhaps themotorcyclewas listed on a global sales website such as eBay®) and won’t be meeting in-person, the parties can use an escrow service that holds the buyer’s payment until the vehicle is received and inspected by the buyer. This protects both the buyer (in case the vehicle’s condition was grossly misrepresented) and the seller (in case the buyer sent a fraudulent check or money order). mic.org

BUYING A USED MOTORCYCLEWhile there’s nothing quite like the feeling of taking ownership of a sparkling, factory-fresh motorcycle from your local dealership, thereare timeswhenasecond-handbikefits thebill.Youmayfindagreatdealonausedbikeatadealershipor in the hands of a private seller. But buying a motor vehicle from a private seller has its pitfalls, and we would like to share some tips.

Ask the owner a lot of questions. Why are they selling it? Do they have service records? Has it been in a crash? When you go to see it, bring a friend who knows about motorcycles too, to help you objectively evaluate the bike. Better yet, arrange tobringittoadealershipforinspectionifpossible. It’sbesttosee the bike during daylight. Take a test-ride, if the seller will allow it (and only if you are licensed to ride). For your safety, at least check the tire pressure, brakes, headlight, and brake light before the ride. Wear your full complement of ridinggear, even for a brief ride on a side street.

1. General areas to inspect:Before you start the engine• What is the overall condition? Are there signs of a crash, such as dents in the fuel tank, or scraped or bent turn signals, levers, handlebarend-caps,footrests,mufflers,orfairings?• Are the tires aged or worn, or worn more on one side?• Are the brake pads worn past the limit line?•Arethehandlebarshardtoturn?Ordotheyhaveexcessivefree-play?• Do all the lights and switches work? Are the battery terminals clean?•Aretheoil, brakefluid(checkfrontandrearreservoirs),andcoolantreservoirsfull?Areallthefluidsclean?• Is thedrivechaindry, rusty, orwornout? Are frontor rearsprocket teeth worn to a point or hooked?

When you start the engine •Istheenginedifficulttostart?• Are there any unusual engine noises or rattling?• Does the engine quickly return to idle when the throttle is released?•Istheexhaustsmoky?(Appliestofour-strokemodelsonly.)

During the test-ride•Doestheenginestall,hesitate,orbackfire?• Does the clutch slip? Does the transmission (gearshift lever) operate smoothly?• Do the brakes slip or grab? (Note that brake squeal does not always indicate a mechanical problem.) • Does the bike pull to one side? (This may indicate wheel misalignment or a bent frame.)

After the test-ride• Are there any oil or coolant leaks?

2. Basic buyer’s tips for private party motor vehicle transactions:• Make sure the motorcycle will be covered by insurance in the event you buy it and will be riding it home.• Be careful if bringing cash, especially if going alone.•Confirmthatthesellerhasthetitleandcurrentregistration.If the registration isnot current, youmaybe responsible foradditional fees.• If you are leaving a deposit andwill pick the bike up later, request a receipt with the VIN, purchase price, amount ofdeposit, date of pickup, and a note stating if the deposit is refundable or non-refundable.• If thesellermakesanypromisesregardingtheconditionof

the bike, or will be providing any spare keys, spare parts, or service records at a later date, get such promises in writing. Otherwise, thesaleisgenerallyregardedasan“asis”saleandthe seller is not responsible for the condition of the bike once you take possession.• Upon purchase, make sure you receive the signed title, current registration, keys, toolkit, owner’s manual, and any other documents, parts or accessories agreed to.

Bytheway, ifthiswillbeyourfirstmotorcycle, westronglyurgeyou to take a formal novice rider training course such as the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic RiderCourse. IhopeyouhadajoyousChristmasanda safe New Year. As we start 2016, my wishes are that our country remains safe and that you, the biker, remains safe as well.

Ihadtheopportunitytoparticipateina couple of Toy Runs over the Christmas holiday. One was for the USMC Toys for Tots and another one for the Shriners Hospital at USF. Nothing like helping the kids to make a biker warm & fuzzy. Then, whileprepping for this article, I got thechance to go out to another USMC Toys for Tots drive in Oldsmar, FL. There, the marines brought in 3 amphibious assault vehicles to display at the Wal-Mart.Iarrivedtostartgatheringinfoona couple of Hillsborough County Sheriffs motorcycle deputies for a story. The side board to that was being allowed to ride back to Tampa in one of the assault carriers while being escorted by the HCSOmotorunit.Itwasverycoolandthemotor unit did a fantastic job on a night escort from Oldsmar to Gandy Bridge.

Which brings me to my subject. Meet Master Deputy Jay Hajj and Deputy Carrie Cooper. They are assigned to district 3, which is the northwest side of Hillsborough County. Deputy Hajj is a 19 ½ year veteran of the department. An avid rider since about 12 years old, Jay has rode or owned just about every type of two-wheeler out there. He is one of the agencies police bike instructors for the 27 motor-man unit. Well, let me correct

that…25 man, and 2 women. Deputy Carrie Cooper, with 6 years under her belt, is presently an alternate motor operator. She normally works patrol in her cruiser, but several times a month she does her shift on the bike. This allows her to stay current on the motor skills she learned in the police motorcycle school. Dep. Hajj added that it is one hard school but Dep. Cooper qualified for the alternate slotand is waiting for a full time opening in theunit.Carriehasalsohadexperienceon her own motorcycle, but when asked what she took away from the school, one of the things was being trained to be more aware of what was going on around her while riding. She said that one of the main things she sees while on patrol is people totally unaware of the vehicles around them. She has handled plenty of crashes involving distracted drivers and like many of us, has had to dodge a few cagers herself. She also said that learning control of the bike and how it reacts to her as the driver was a big part of the training for her. She believes that more women would enjoy “riding their own”if they mastered those techniques. She fully believes that riders should take the advanced bike course. Dep. Hajj warns new riders that they need to get out and put some ride time on their machines. He says he can always spot a new rider by the way they drive. Some are obviously shaky and unsure about the operation of a cycle. Some think they have it all together but they make mistakes that can be fatal. For examplehe said, most riders don’t understand that the faster they drive, the more your vision narrows. You become so in tuned to what is right in front of you that you don’t see anything around you…like other vehicles, retaining walls or sharp curves.

The Police Harleys are loaded with plenty of gear. Dep Hajj opened his tour pack which was stuffed with the “tools ofthetrade”.Thereisaradarunitwhichhas 2 antennas mounted to the bike. This radar can clock you either coming or going from the unit. They also have a laser speed gun that they can aim and single out one particular vehicle. There is a Bluetooth police laptop which allows them to write reports; gather license or a person’s info; a driver’s license reader (similar to a credit card reader); and a printer that will spit out a citation in seconds. They also have GPS that allows the dispatcher to know where they are. The deputies told me that each member of the unit averages about 100 citations in a month’s work cycle. Do the math…27 deputies x 100 ticket a month is…2700tickets a month! Jay told me they are usually speeding citations, but it could be anything. Both stated that the things they enjoyed were doing escorts and doing “show & tell” with kids. Carrie chimingthe kids…”How fastwill it go”, “turn onthe lights&siren”.Asevident fromthatmilitary escort I mentioned, these menAND women, are professionals. If justdoing police work isn’t dangerous in itself, thentheseofficershavetobewareof cagers. Save a life, watch out for motorcycles. Now let’s ride and….Bsafe.

New Year’s Greetings

Parkinson’s Fund Raiser Returns with New Date and New Location

2015 saw the creation of the inaugural Shakes, Rattles, Rides and Rods for Parkinson’s Disease. Rick Karczewski is a military veteran and a fellow rider fromBrandonwhomImetseveralyearsago while covering veteran’s events in the Tampa area. Like my wife, he has Parkinson’s and they are being treated by the same doctor at the USF Medical Center, Dr. Theresa Zesiewiecz, one of the best you’ll find. Rick, alongwith his

fellowAMVETSPost44members,andtheAmerican Legion Riders from Post 148 in Riverview, planned and coordinated the event this past February at the Hidden River Travel Resort in Riverview. More than $15,000 was raised for Parkinson’s disease research. Pretty impressive for thefirsttimeoutofthegate.

This year’s event has a new date, Saturday, January 23rd and is moving from Riverview to the AMVETS Post 44clubhouse on State Road 60, between BrandonandPlantCity. It’sagreatplacefor a party with acres of room for vendors and parking. The clubhouse is large with plenty of seating inside the bar or on one of the enclosed porches. Your $15 donationgetsyoufoodandaraffleticketfor the grand prize. A Good Time for a Good Cause is included at no additional charge.

PLEASE NOTE: This location is different from what was published in last month’s Go FAR, on several online event calendars, and on a few thousand postcards that were distributed.

Go FAR v9.0

This summer will mark the 9th AnniversaryofthefirstissueofGoForARide magazine. There have been a lot of changes in the world of communication sincewestarted.In2007,thefirstiPhonehad just hit the market and something called MySpace was more popular than Facebook. Now it seems that just about everyone has to have a Facebook page and kids are masters at phone apps. We’ve worked hard to keep pace with the changes. Along with the printed magazine, you can get an electronic version to read on your computer, tablet, or even your kid’s smartphone.

And if you put the layout design, contents, and paper quality of that first issue upagainst our latest, it’s like comparing Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis to today’s supersonic ocean crossing jetliners. Both get the job done, but in a very different style.

Go FAR will continue to evolve as we work to bring you news and views concerning the world of motorcycles. Our social network community is growing. You’ll finddailyupdatesonourFacebookpagewhere we’ve just launched our “Bike of theWeek” feature. You can also followus on Twitter.

2016 will see the debut of the Go FAR Online Business Directory which is something brand new for Florida’s motorcycle community. Wouldn’t it be great to go to one source for an accurate listing of motorcycle businesses in your area? It will be free for you to accessand a basic listing will be free for any motorcycle related business. Check out our website at www.gofarmag.com to see how it looks. As that annoying car dealersaysinhisTVads,“It’sgonnabeHUGE!”

Resolve To Ride Safe

The start of a New Year is a time when people start making resolutions to change the way they do things. For many it’s an opportunity to quit a bad habit, improve their health, or learn something new. How about combining all three with your motorcycle riding?

How? Wear your safety gear when you ride!

As we went to press for this issue, there was an accident involving a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy while on motorcycle patrol. Deputy Tim Berg was hit from behind by a flat-bed truck anddragged more than 150 feet beneath the truck. The truck also hit several other vehicles and it took rescuers more than an hour to extricate the deputy. His injuries included lacerations and a possible broken ankle. Pretty amazing to get run over by a truck and live to tell about it.

Had he not been wearing his helmet and been attired in shorts and sneakers, Idon’t think the outcome would have been the same.

By Mike SavidgeFlorida has one of the largest populations of military veterans in the country. We’re third behind California and Texas with more than 1.5 million who have served theircountry. We appreciate their service and want to highlight a few benefits that everyone might not be aware of. Moreinformation about veteran benefits can be found onlineat the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs website (www.floridavets.com).

1. Dental Insurance –Havingadental insurancepolicycantake some of the pain out of a visit to the dentist. Through a partnership that theVAestablishedwithDeltaDental (www.deltadentalvadip.org) and MetLife (www.metlife.com/vadip),eligible veterans can purchase affordable dental insurance. This also applies to family members who are receiving care under CHAMPVA. There are no eligibility limitations basedon service-connected disability rating or enrollment priority assignment.

2. Education Benefits–inadditiontotheUSGovernment’sGIBillplans tohelpveterans further theireducation,FloridaState Colleges and Universities offers some perks to vets. Veteranscanobtainprioritywhenregisteringforcoursesandin some cases they can be given academic college credit for training and education they acquired in the military. Consult theOfficeoftheRegistrarortheVeteransLiaisononyourlocalcampus for details. Florida also waives out-of-state tuition fees for all honorably discharged veterans. For older veterans who were inducted prior to completing high school, they can be awarded a State of Florida High School Diploma.

3. “V” for Veteran Driver License –Alawwaspassedin2011that allows Florida veterans to have a “veterandesignation”added to their driver license. You must provide documentation of an Honorable Discharge and pay a small one-time fee to havea“V”added.Anyotherapplicablelicensefeeswillapply.This is an easy way to show that you’re a vet without carrying around a lot of paperwork.

4. Florida State Park Discount Pass–Veterans, activedutyservice and reserve member can receive a 25% discount on the annual pass which gives you access to 161 Florida State Parks. Free lifetime family passes are available to veterans with service connected disabilities, surviving spouses, and Gold Star Parents of military vets who were killed in combat. Find more information at www.FloridaStateParks.org.

5. Business and Health License Fee Waivers – If you’re aveteran who’s starting a business within 24 months of your honorable discharge, there’s a chance you can have some of the initial license or application fees waived. There are more than 20 business professions under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and 30 professions under the Florida Department of Health that are eligible. More information can be found at www.MyFloridaLicense.com or www.FloridaHealth.gov.

By Lowell Anderson aggressive street ride. Most of the guys going with us were racers, and at the time, I hadn’t evenbeen to a trackday.Needlesstosay,Iwasabitnervouswhenall the guys started gathering and we were getting ready to go. I had riddenwith a few of these guys before and Iremember thinking that it was going to be a real struggle just to keep up without killing myself. Some of these guys were really fast, and I knew oncewe got outon the open rode we were going to be hammering through some corners. One of my buddies obviously saw the distress all over my face and came over to chat justbeforeweheadedout.Inabrieftwominute conversation, he gave me a piece ofadvicethatIhasstuckwithmethroughevery riding adventure I have been onsince that day. What was that gem you ask? What was this piece of wisdom that has more than once saved me from an early demise? Four little words…”Rideyourownride.”Irememberrecitingthatsaying a few times that day in my helmet when I was pushing my limits to staywith thegroup. In theend, I am sure itsavedmefrompushingittoofar.Imadeit through that ride without any injuries and tomy delight, I wasn’t the slowestguy that day.

Those four words have followed me through all my different riding adventures. When I first started ridingoff road, certain types of riding came to mealoteasierthanothers.Iremembergoing to a motocross track with some friends many years later. We went to a large riding facility and they had all kinds of different terrain to ride. Motocross came pretty natural to me because it wasonatrackandliketheroadracingIhad done in the past, it was easy for me to adapt to that environment, but when

Every now and then you will hear a piece of advice that sticks with you. Sometimes it’s a saying dreamed up from a celebrity or someone famous, sometimes it’s something your parents used to say to yougrowingup.Sayingslike,“Ifyawantitdoneright, doityourself!”or“Nothingworth having ever comes easy.” Theseare the type of sayings that stick in my mindandcometothesurfacewhenIamlooking for answers. One of my fondest ridingmemorieswasthefirsttimeIeverjumped a big double riding moto. On a SundayatalocaltrackImadethedecisionto finally jump a series of doubles thatIwas never brave enough to attempt. Iremember finally doing the jumps andshowingupforworkthenextday.Iwasprettyexcitedaboutmyexperienceandthe word had gotten to Sane Watts that I was jumping some pretty big doublesat the local track. He asked me about my riding the previous day and then gave me anothersayingIhaven’t forgotten.“Bigdoubles big troubles!” I think that washis way of just telling me to be careful. I never forgot thatmoment. Formyselfthese are more than sayings. These are memories and anthems to live by and Ifindmyselfreferringtothemoften.

When it comes to riding, there have been some sayings like this that have alwaysstuckwithme.IrememberwhenIfirststartedridingroadbikes, agroupof us were getting ready to go on an

we went into the woods, things got real in a hurry! I remember going into thewoods on a beaten trail trying to keep up with some of my more experiencedfriends. Within minutes I found myselfstrugglingtokeepmystability.Ihitsomebare tree roots that had come through onthetrail.ThenextthingIknewIwasbouncing myself and my bike off of a few trees before I finally came off thebike and nearly knocked myself out cold. I remember laying there thinking tomyself, “Wow! This is way harder than it looks!”WhenIgotuptogetmybikethesecond thought in my mind was, “Ride yourownride….idiot!”

This little statement is so important no matter what your skill level is. Many new motorcyclist make the mistake of going into motorcycling without taking the time to learn a little about what they are doing. Ihaveseensomanypeoplegetnewdirtbikesonlytofindthemselvessellingthemafter a few trips to the hospital. I havealso seen tons of incidents on the street that simply could have been avoided with a little training. Simple things like not smashing your front brake on wet grass or gravel.

This sport isn’t something you want to jumpintoandjusttryto“Keepup”withyour riding buddies. Sometimes that is the worst thing you can do. You have to pace yourself and increase your skill set. Avoid being pressured by others to do things you don’t think you are ready for. You should be the one that pushes yourself and your levels.

So whatever style of riding you enjoy please keep those four simple words in your memory bank. Hopefully they will keep you from doing something silly…”HEYY’ALL!WATCHTHIS!”

There use to be a Honda commercial that used the catch phrase “You meet thenicestpeopleonaHonda”.I’msurethere are millions of great folks who ride Hondas but meetin’ great folks who ride motorcycles ain’t limited to just Hondas. My point is the “Biker Community” ingeneral is just a unique bunch of free spirited people who share a common bond for the joy of ridin’ their bikes regardless of make or models. If youare the least bit serious ‘bout ridin’, you quicklylearnthenumberone“Biker”rule.“Neverleaveonestranded…NEVER!”.

Like most who ride, ridin’ out to Sturgis is always buried in my thoughts. I’vebeenblessedinsomuchasI’vebeentothe rally several times, but this particular timeIwantedtocheckSturgisoutafterthe rally. Itwas late August, therewasalreadyastronghintoffallintheair.Iwasriding in the Custer State Park looking for a particular rustic campground. Despite getting’ directions from the ranger and usin’thestupidparkmapIcouldn’tfindthe friggin’ campground. It had beena chilly overcast day with spits of light rain on and off all day. Getting dark the temperature was dropping and the rain was now coming down harder at a steady pace. Cold, soaked to the bone and thoroughlypissedoff, I pulledoverto look at the useless map one more time before shredding it!

I was still sittin’ on my scoot whenanother biker stopped. Dressed in full rain gear wearing a full face shield helmet theyaskedifIwasallright.That’swhenIrealizeditwasafemalevoice.“Yea,I’mgoodjustalittleturnedaround.”Whachyalookin’for?”Sheasked.Iexplainedmysituation, we both looked at the map, but neither of us had a clue, her suggestion for

me was to ride back to the ranger shack andasktherangeragain.Iponderedheradvice,withnootherrealoptionIheadedback. I was about to leave the rangershack and give it a second shot when she pulled up. She pulled up close, told me to hang on, went inside for a minute or so, cameback out. “Listen, I have aroom at the Best Western in Cross City. Letmebookyoua room for thenight”.Blindsidedbytheoffer,Iquicklyrefusedtheoffer.“Hey,Iknowyouareaguybutdon’tbeastupidguy!It’srainingharder,itsfreezin’cold,followme”,sheordered.InthelobbyofthehotelIputupanothergallant fight to no avail as she bookedand paid for the room. Then again she blindsided me when she handed me a 20 and said the ranger told her to give it to me!!!!!Anothergallantfightensuedandagain I foundmyself loosing the battle, but the war wasn’t over, no not by a long shot.ImadeheragreetomeetmeinthediningroominanhoursoIcouldbuyherdinner, finally Iscoredonefortheguy’sside.

After dinner we made a pack to meet in the morning around 7 in the dining room andIwouldbuybreakfast. Needlesstosay I had a tough time going to sleepthatnight.Ijustcouldn’tfigureoutwhatwas happening. I finally came to theconclusion that she was just a very kind hearted gal, who wanted to share some joy. It was a long night with very littlesleep for me.

Next morning I was up early, did theusual morning routine thing, caught the local weather, packed my gear and went to the dining room. I sipped on coffeeand watch the clock in the dining room slowly tick the minutes away. 6:50, 7:00, 7:15, 7:30 and still no show. About 10 to 8Iwentouttotheparkinglotandlookedforherbike,nottobefound. I’veoftenwonder what became of her. Vanished, gone like a thief in the night. Like the Lone Ranger, does she just ride the country lookingforpeopletohelp?Idon’tevenknowher name. Iwonder if she is stillriding the countryside spreading good will. A phantom ghost rider, drifting in and out of people’s lives. Here for a fleeting moment then disappearingforeverwithouta trace. All I canrecallis, she had mentioned she was gonna

meet up with some biker lady friends in Colorado and if my memory serves me correctly she told me she lives in Tampa. So hey if you read this article, Hyway says “Howdy”,andIstilloweyouabreakfast.

Iknowthisstorysoundsmadeup, butIswear on my mother’s grave it is 100% real, but as the say you can’t make this stuff up.

Can you say lunch? Hmmm, today after Tomgot out ofwork he asked if Iwanted to ride out to Ortona to Sportlife Plus to get some lunch. Sure I thoughtthis would be a nice easy ride away from traffic, wecouldsitoutbythewaterandchow down. Well we get out there and my luck doesn’t fail me, there is no food. There were some riders there enjoying the relaxing atmosphere though. Pig Inor Pig Out BBQ that is stationed right next door to Sportlife Plus was out atsome competition and I sure hope hewins and then gets back to taking care of usonweekends.Maybenexttimewegoout there for a Saturday lunch there will befood,I’msureI’mnotaloneinfeelingthis way. Such a great little get away to not have even a burger & fries. Oh well. So we left there and headed to Hwy27 to check out a little place in Moore Haven we heard opened. Hmmm musta heard wrong because the place we checked out was closed. Ok now, this is getting serious,we’rebothhungry. I suggestedlet’s keep going south then get on Hwy 80 and stop at Pioneer Gator Bait, the food is always very good there. If youstop in be sure to get fries, they are the best I’ve had! Well guess my idea ofstopping in there to eat was a bad one, the place was packed solid. I looked in

the door (saw Robin) and saw there was apooltournamentgoingon.Wow,Ican’tbelieve howmany people were there, IalsosawalotoffoodinfrontoffolkssoIknew it would be a long wait. We decided to just mosey on. The weather was very nice so this search for food was being doneon a comfortable relaxing ride. Atone point we passed about eight bikes headed west on 80, see it was a great day to ride. Once we got back to LaBelle itwaseasytofindsomefood, wecangohome or just stop in at one of the many restaurants. Ididn’t feel like cookingsostopping it was. Had a wonderful lunch then headed home.
