Shakes, Rattles, Rides and RodsPresents Check To Dr. ZOn Saturday, Aprl 4th, there was a party at the Riverview American Legion to celebrate the succes of the inaugural event this year to raise funds for Parkinsons Research. Event founder Rick Karczewski presented a check for more than $11,000 to Dr Zesiewicz for the foundation for Parkinson’s research that she started in memory of her mother. The funds will help fund a scholarship for USF students specializing in Parkinson’s Disease. It will be named in honor of Rick and the event.The February event raised almost $17,000 with the remainder being donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

By Mike SavidgeOn April 12th, a poker run was held to raise money for Girls Inc of Pinellas. They’re part of a national organization (and Canada) that helps to mentor girls and give them the tools and skills need-ed to be successful adults. Attorney Fran Haasch was a sponsor for this first time event and more than 60 riders enjoyed the ride which started at Jim’s Harley-Davidson , took us on a ride gulfside, and ended with a party at Quaker Steak and Lube. According to Girls Inc it was very successful and they raised $1,200.

Most motorcycle accidents occur when another vehicle violates our right of way. Many of those crashes are unavoidable due to the actions of the other driver. However, about 34 percent of the motorcycle accidents involve only a single vehicle, the motorcycle, and many of these are the fault of the motorcycle rider. Riding too fast for conditions, not paying attention to the roadway, and inexperience can be contributing factors to these types of crashes. But sometimes the blame also lies with the road itself.
For the most part, Florida roads are in fairly good condition, especially when compared to other parts of the country where they have freezing winters. Potholes and buckled roads are the exception for the Sunshine State and any road with mountain as part of its name is nothing more than a hill to a non-native. But living here in Riding Paradise does have its caveats, including wandering wildlife, distracted drivers, intense summer weather, and the usual roadway hazards of sand, loose gravel, and day-old roadkill. And, as good as our road
surfaces are compared to the rest of the country, factors like heavy vehicle traffic or the incursion of water that can cause a road surface to deteriorate.
I posted an informal poll on Facebook asking our readers what they thought was the most dangerous road for motorcycles in Florida. Of course the interstates got a lot of votes, as did many of the urban city streets where traffic is heavy at times. So it might come as a surprise when I tell you one of the most dangerous roadways is a lightly traveled two lane path through the coastal marshes in Citrus County.
The Ozello Trail meanders from US 19 out to the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a favorite for bikers because it’s a scenic coastal cruise with a couple of restaurants along the route. We also like it because it’s got curves. There are some nice tight curves that take you almost to the water’s edge. And that’s one of the reasons this stretch of road is so dangerous. Tides, wind and human activities can leave sand deposits which can turn carving a curve into and drifting into the drink. Saltwater and motorcycles do not mix well.
This nine mile stretch of roadway, along with eight other Citrus County roads were given $1.5 million in upgrades last year to help make them safer and reduce what FDOT refers to as “lane-departure crashes”. The grant money came from state funds and allowed the county to make improvements that weren’t covered in their local budgets.
Deteriorating sections of the road have been repaired and retro-reflective pavement markers were placed along the curve edge lines. Large chevron signs with arrows indicating the curves were added along with solar-powered speed feedback signs. There’s no chance of those curves sneaking up on you now.
Will the new signs and such make this a safer road? Well, that’s up to the riders. For no matter what the state or county does to make you aware of the road conditions, the ultimate responsibility always lies with the hand on the throttle.

Look at your watch. What are you going to be doing in the next 58 hours? Look back from right now…what have you done in the last 58 hours? Think about what you have done, said, ate, drank and now…58 hours later…reading this article is the last thing you will do. Welcome to the world of law enforcement where a police officer is killed (on average) every 58 hours.
It’s that time of year again, May, the month set aside to pay tribute to the men and women of law enforcement who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and given their lives in the line of duty. President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial day in 1962. The day to honor our fallen officers has morphed into a week of activity with the 2015 event taking place May 11th to the 17th. Several hundred participants attended those first memorials in Senate Park. Today, at the official Police Memorial in Judiciary Square, over 50,000 law enforcement officers, their families, and importantly, the survivor families of officers killed will gather. The marble wall of etched names will have added 121
names from 2014. Their names will be read at the candlelight vigil sponsored by Lodge 1 of the Fraternal Order of Police. A solemn event held in the evening at the memorial. As attendees gather, buses filled with the survivor families begin to arrive. Members of various honor guardsmen escort them to seats flanked by marble walls with the names of fallen heroes. The folding chairs face a stage with a large memorial emblem on the back wall. A row of officers from around the country stand on a raised platform at the back of the stage behind the seated dignitaries. They post guard for a segment of time and then are replaced by another group of officers. A “thin blue line” laser beam protrudes from the top of the stage over the heads of the crowd and streaks into the night sky. Speeches are given, songs are sung, then the lights dim and thousands of candles are lit. As the fallen officer’s name is spoken, you can see a stir in the crowd. It is the fellow officers from that agency snapping to attention and giving the slow salute to their fallen comrade. If you could get through the mass of people to see the survivors seating area, you would see the pain being relived one more time for their loss. The national organization of C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors) is greatly involved in the healing process and at this event holds workshops and social events for the families. They have grief counseling camps for the children during the year as well.
Another of the many planned events will be the Cop Ride. Started by Officer Gary Lyons, a motorcycle cop and biker, he led a group of LEO biker enthusiasts from RFK stadium to the memorial. That group totaled about 50. Today, the ride is part of the event and has reached 1,500 riders. The procession starts with a mass about of uniformed motor cops, followed by cops on private bikes followed by LEO clubs and then friends of LEO. It is a spectacular show of bikes. Founded in 1984, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that
maintains the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, located at Judiciary Square in Washington DC. Elegant marble walls display the names of more than 20,000 federal, state and local law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty dating back to 1791. Interactive video displays, free children’s activity packet, gift shop, free walking tour brochures and maps are available at the Visitors Center & Store located at 400 7th Street NW and open daily until 5 pm. Memorial is open 24-hours. Free admission. Guided tours by appointment. The Memorial Fund is now working to create the first-ever National Law Enforcement Museum, under construction across from the Memorial. The Museum will tell the story of American law enforcement through exhibits, collections, research and education. Scheduled to open in 2016. However, most people don’t purposely run into harm’s way on a daily bases. You don’t go into a dark old creaking building in the middle of the night looking for a criminal not knowing if they are armed or not. You don’t jump into cold water to get a child out of a car that has crashed. Not many of you have picked up body parts or watched brain matter drip off a ceiling. Gross? Yes it is. It’s part of the job. So is investigating child abuse, or standing in hot smelling roach infested house to investigate violent crimes. You are not singled out by telling your kids, “you better watch out or I’ll tell that electrician to get you”. (that one ticks me off…making your kids afraid of the police) But we do it because we want to make this a better place to live. We come

We endure insults like racist or PIG, [pride, integrity, guts] ;) We don’t want to give out tickets or put your kid in jail, but it’s a part of the job. As riders, we have to stop placing the majority of blame on motorists and take responsibility for our own riding. In 2013, motorcycle riders were at fault in 62% of motorcycle crashes in Florida that resulted in severe injury or fatality.
In 2012, there were 2,030 motorcycle riders killed nationwide in single-vehicle crashes. Of those, 43 percent were impaired at the time of the crash-64 percent were impaired when the crashes occurred on weekend nights.
Riding a motorcycle isn’t easy, so if a motorcycle rider’s balance, judgment or coordination is diminished by any alcohol-a ride can end in tragedy. You’re not only putting yourself at risk on the road-you’re risking the lives of other drivers.
As we remind motorists to share the road with motorcycles this month (and every month), Ride Smart Florida would like to also remind riders that the consequences of drunk riding are serious and real. Here’s just a sample of what you may have to lose:

Starting out at Florida Southern College, home to many examples of Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs you’ll ride out to the futuristic building along I-4 housing the Florida Polytechnic University. The route then takes you through Winter Haven and past LegoLand, think of all the things those little plastic blocks have built. The last leg of the ride ends at the famous Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales.

Arizona has to offer motorcycle riders, from picturesque roads to intriguing attractions to marvelous restaurants, was coming to a close. It was time to start heading east as our first grandchild was due to be born in early May.
In my article, “Wrapping It Up In Arizona”, available online this month at www.gofarmag.com, I share why Arizona should be on every motorcycle rider’s bucket list. It’s an incredibly biker-friendly state where most of our rides were on clear, well-maintained roads that can be enjoyed by riders with any level experience. Ones that may present challenges for novice riders are discussed throughout all of my articles about riding Central Arizona. Look for them in the 2014 archived issues of Go For A Ride, which are available online. In “Wrapping It Up In Arizona” I share the routes we took on our rides to Prescott, Tombstone, and Bisbee. I also share the good, the bad, and the ugly about our experiences in each location, from our very d i s a p p o i n t i n g lunch at The Palace Saloon to what turned out to be a harrowing ride on Route 89-A to the great time we had in Tombstone.
RV’ing bikers will be amazed at the camping opportunities, from free rustic sites sponsored by the State to countless RV resorts and more. I provide some tips about these camping locations in my online article.

Make sure you fill out the proper paperwork, because if you don’t, we are going to make you and the fans suffer for it.
How pathetic!This was a major disappointment
to many of the fans this year. This announcement combined with the fact that Ryan Villopoto went off to race MXGP this year really made the competition look pretty bleak. Another issue facing the series this year was the number of injuries that took so many of the riders out of the competition. Some of the favorites like Justin Barcia, Justin Brayton, Wil Hahn, Mike Alessi, and Dean Wilson. All of these guys had injuries this year that took them out of the race for the title.
Now that we are near the end of the Sending the right message?One of the major things that happened
this year in the motocross scene was the FIM’s suspension of James Stewart for use of banned substances. Unfortunately the use of enhancement drugs has been a problem for many years in all of the different sports out there, but the issue I have with this particular suspension was how it has been handled.
After weeks of deliberation the FIM suspended James Stewart for 16 months. Now the problem…he was suspended for using Adderall. Yes, they suspended him for taking a drug that was prescribed to him by a doctor to help him with an attention deficit disorder. Now why would they suspend him for doing this? Simply because he didn’t follow the procedures properly to let the FIM know he was taking the medication.
Now I understand the need for rules and regulations here, but it seems to me the FIM choose to forego the use of simple common sense. They used this incident as an opportunity to make an example of James Stewart. The issue I have here is the message that should be conveyed when suspending a professional athlete from competition is; You cannot use banned substances if you want to compete. In my opinion that is a legitimate message and one that I support wholeheartedly! In this particular case, this was not the
season, it looks like Ryan Dungey will win the championship this year and I can’t say anything bad about this guy. I think he did a great job again this year and remained consistent in his results, and that is what wins championships. He definitely deserves the title. I just think it would have been better for the fans if the FIM would have used some common sense in this decision process.
Ultimately I totally support the objective here to keep the sport clean and make sure these riders are competing in a fair and honest matter. It has been announced that James will not retire and is currently training to compete again. I really hope that he comes out and shows the FIM and the fans, what they missed this year.

It’s been said, “Time waits for no man”. I gotta admit I’ve slowed down some over the years, especially in the past five or so. Time is definitely catching up with me. Now I’m not saying I’m ready to live out the rest of my days sittin’ in a rocking chair on the front porch whittling and reliving my glory days of yesteryear through my memory. Alls I’m sayin’ is my days of all night partying and trying to drink every last drop of whisky in the barrel are past. I’ve accepted my failure; I’ve come to terms with the fact that, despite giving it my best shot for many years, I just can’t drink it all! Hard weekend partying is no longer my top priority.
Being a long time motorcycle rider hanging around in the “Biker” circles, I know first hand, bikers being bikers it doesn’t take much too really get a party Rockin’-N- Rollin’. There have been times I’ve been broke down on the side of the road waiting for the road service truck, when a biker stops, then another road tripper stops, next thing there are three or four bikes and a half dozen folks. We turn on some tunes, break out the chips and beverages, and proceed to have a grand ‘Old time. It’s really kinda
disappointing when the road service truck shows up!
But we all know there ain’t no better excuse to really get things roarin’ along at full throttle then a motorcycle rally. It doesn’t matter where the rally is; camping is always a big favorite for lodging. Seems like every square foot of ground within a 50 mile radius of any rally is converted into a temporary campground. Camping offers a less expensive alternative to motels and gives ya a chance to meet folks. The bigger more famous or “infamous” campgrounds at any rally is where a lot of the “Real” action and “Serious Partin’” takes place. Campgrounds offer everything from big name bands, bonfires, motorcycle rodeos to races, show bike contests and a lot of stuff in-between. If you’re looking for it, you’ll find it at most any campground. Campgrounds offer pretty much whatever you want except a good nights sleep!
After you’ve been to a few rallies and you’ve seen all the Jello wrestling you care to see, going to a rally becomes more of an excuse for a road trip then the destination. Yea there’s an excitement, but the excitement is more about the adventure. Like kick starter and ridged hard tails, time is catching up with some of us. For some of us old timers, rallies are more about getting away for a few days, checking out the venders along with some partyin’ but more so, it involves watching the “younger” folks do their thing. I like finding a nice laid back campground to just chill after a day of walking Main Street and looking into every T Shirt shop, leather tent and listening to every vender explain why it would be extremely
stupid for you to go home without buying whatever they’re selling, it’s nice to have a little peace when you get back to camp.
If Sturgis’s 75th anniversary is on your agenda, Gentle Eagle Campground might be exactly what the Dr. ordered. This is a small campground located just across the street from Buffalo Chip, about 6 miles outta Sturgis. This might not be your choice of campgrounds if you are looking for all night parties but if you’re lookin’ for a more peaceful laid back place to recuperate after a tuff day roaming the streets, this is the place. And they’ve recently installed a great hot tub to melt away all your aches and pains.
Gentle Eagle campground consists of 40 tent sites and several cabins. Tent sites include water and electric. Clean hot showers are also included. Cabins are air conditioned and sleep up to 4 people. Chris and Bob offer a “Rally Special” that includes daily breakfast and dinner all for one low price. One other note, unlike the more famous campgrounds, Gentle Eagle is open all summer. Before or after the rally it’s a great place for family camping. There’s a small fishing pond, a fun Zip Line and a paddle boat for the kids. Awesome bands on stage, some of the best BBQ cookers around, and lots of stuff to keep the kids entertained. Awesome time and I look forward to next yearís event.

All too often I hear from folks that have ridden around Lake Okeechobee and how disappointing it was because they never did see the lake. Well since my husband is on vacation we decided that we’d head out and just see how many places we can actually see the lake from. Started out in LaBelle and headed north on 29 to 78 east to 27 south then back onto 78 heading toward Okeechobee. There were lots of canals along the way but we didn’t find the lake. Now when we come up to the intersection of 78 and 441 on the right hand side of the road there is an entrance going up a little hill to the Okeechobee City Boat Ramp. This is a hardtop road that runs along the lake and at the end of the road is a boat ramp. You can see lots of the lake here along with a lot of different species of birds. I noticed that there is some construction going on at the pier, looks the park is in the process of getting more hard top parking area and restrooms.
Ok onward we go. Heading south on 78 (east side of the lake) we come to the BIG bridge in Port Mayaca. Now just before the bridge there is a little road to the right that takes ya up to the locks. Again this is a hardtop road and at the end of it there is plenty of parking and an easy turn around. From here you can see all the lake you wanna see. Beautiful view
and if you’re there the right time of the day you can see a lot of big boats waiting to get through. Lots of times we’ve stopped right on top of the bridge to get photos. I’m not suggesting you do it, I’m just telling you we’ve done it plenty of times. Single file lots of room.
Alright next we get back on the road to go over the bridge heading toward Canal Point approx. 9 miles. On the right as you are coming into town there is a small sign on the right with the park icon and the road takes you up over the railroad tracks then to the right. Park doesn’t look like it’s used a whole lot but you can see the lake. I found it interesting. Don’t hang out on the railroad track because trains do come though often.
Back on the road heading toward Pahokee… you’re gonna love this one! About 4 miles you’ll turn to the right, go up the hill then to the right. All paved roads with some being one way so follow the signs. I believe this location has the largest view of the lake. In addition to some huge alligators there is also restaurant, boat docks, fishing piers and a camping area. This is a great place to visit, you’d enjoy it.
Well this about covers all the places we could find that the lake is the view. If anyone has other locations please let me know so I can pass on the word.
Riding around the lake is always fun but it’s more fun when if you stop in to check out some of these stops.
