Custom Gobos

Custom gobos can be made to fit virtually any stationary or moving light. Your artwork may be a logo, text, a photo or anyimage. But the critical decision is choosing the right vendor. When you place your order with a dealer, the dealer will prob-ably recommend that your custom gobo be manufactured at Rosco. Heres why:

Rosco manufactures its own dichroic glass in its purpose-built facility in Round Rock, Texas. Dichroic glass is the basic build-ing block for glass gobos. Virtually all other gobo manufacturers have to buy their dichroic glass from various outside suppli-ers. Manufacturing its own glass assures color consistency from gobo to gobo and from batch to batch. It also assures thatthe gobo will be the same in quality if more copies need to be manufactured months after the original tooling. For manyclients or company managements, color consistency in, for example, corporate logos is an overriding concern.

Although Roscos standard dichroic glass thickness is 1.75mm, our manufactured glass gobos are as thin as 1.1mm thicknessfor black & white and one color gobos and 1.9mm for hi-resolution multi colors. This is particularly important because ofthe optics capability in today's highly advanced light fixtures. The substrates used allow a better focal plane. Such gobos willalso fit the gobo slots of most instruments far more effectively, allowing for maximum usage of the light fixtures' projectioncapabilities.

Free Flow Series A combination of colors smoothly blended together in a unique, flowing design.

PrismaticsPrismatics are recommended for use in moving lights with lamps up to 1200 watts. In ellipsoidal fixtures, they should beused with a 600 watt lamp, though short term use with lamps up to 750 watts may be acceptable. Prismatics require theuse of the Universal Iris Slot Holder. Prismatics are available in standard B Size or in smaller sizes for automated luminairesby special order. Prismatics are NOT available for use in the Rosco X-Effects Projector.

Gobo HoldersWith the breadth and depth of gobos available, it is important to choose the gobo holder that is appropriate for your luminaire (most luminaires must use a specific size gobo) and for the type of goboyou are using (some gobos are thicker than others and require a special holder to accommodate it.

For Lekos, Rosco offers holders to accommodate most luminaires and most gobo types.

Gobos for Moving LightsRosco will make every effort to produce any Rosco gobos design for any automated luminaire you specify. The limiting factors are size and information. Our technical team is in communication with allmajor manufacturers of moving lights and we try to maintain a complete, up-to-date database of themost current fixtures in order to have all of the technical information required to produce a successfulgobo. In rare cases, you may request a gobo for a luminaire not in our database and for which we haveno sizing information. Work with us to get it and we will be happy to make your gobo and meet yourdeadline!

Temperature, Durability, and MaintenanceStainless Steel Gobos Steel gobos can withstand the heat from virtually any modern luminaire, at least for a short while. Inluminaires under 1200 watts, a steel gobo can be expected to last for months or longer of typical theatreusage. It is common for the gobo to discolor and possibly warp due to the intense heat but the integrityof the design will remain intact. In some designs with extremely fine line details, excessive heat maydamage these fragile elements prematurely. When used in luminaires over 1200 watts, the lifespan willbe reduced to some extent, depending on the heat and focus of the lamp.

Effects Glass GobosColorizers are made using high temperature fused silica glass that can withstand the high temperaturesfrom lamps up to 2500 watts. The color and patterning will not be affected by typical use in commonfixtures and you can expect them to last for years unless dropped or physically damaged.

Image Glass, Prismatics and Colorwaves are suitable for long term use in fixtures under 600 watts, or forintermittent use in fixtures up to 1200 watts or less. In these higher wattage luminaires, sustained excessive temperatures may result in cracking, delamination of the Prismatics chips or peeling of thedichroic coating.

Glass GobosBlack and White Glass Gobos are typically made on high temperature borosilcate glass coated withRoscos unique Ultra-Matte aluminum coating. These Ultra-Matte B/W gobos are designed for usewith high wattage lamps up to 1200 watts, as well as high output luminaires such as the Robert JuliatDArtagnan. A Rosco Ultra-Matte B/W gobo can be installed with either surface facing the lamp withoutdamaging the gobo. For certain fixtures, or upon request, Rosco B/W Glass gobos can be manufacturedusing Black Oxide Aluminum. This coating, applied to the same high temperature borosilicate, willreduce imaging problems found in some fixtures, such as double imaging due to internal reflections. ABLACK OXIDE GOBO MUST BE INSTALLED WITH THE BLACK SURFACE FACING AWAY FROM THELAMP. Failure to install this gobo properly will result in immediate damage to the gobo.

Color Glass Spectrumgobos by Rosco have tremendous heat resistance due to the dichroic layers used inthe manufacturing process. These gobos can withstand heat in luminaires up to 2000 watts or more anddo not degrade under the heat. In extreme environments, cracking or delamination may occur. Usedproperly, a Rosco Glass Spectrumgobo can be expected to last for years with no apparent wear.

In all cases, a properly adjusted lamp focus that reduces hot spots and creates an even field of light willincrease the lifespan of your gobos!

Rosco custom glass gobos are widely used in both stationary and moving lights. They offer the advantages of verysharp fidelity in both photographic and drawn images and, of course, brilliant projected color.

Rosco manufactures the dichroic filter layers of glass gobos in its Texas facility. This self-contained manufacturingcapability, unique in the industry, allows Rosco to maintain real control over the color quality in the images it creates into gobos. Many companies and institutions require this kind of control in the color of its products, logosor insignias.

Custom glass gobos requiring only black or any other single color are produced in two days. (Orders received atRosco on Monday are ready to ship on Wednesday.) Custom glass gobos with two colors require three days andfull color five days.

You need a custom gobo when you want specific images or text in your production. The most obvious example is a logo, orthe name of the guest of honor at an event or the star of a show. Fortunately, manufacturing a gobo to your exact needs andspecifications nowadays is fast, easy and affordable.

Custom steel gobos, for example, are shipped in just one day. (Orders received at Rosco on Monday ship from ourgobo factory in Texas on Tuesday.) Custom glass gobos take a little longer, but all orders get the same meticulousattention and quality control that has made Rosco the world leader in gobo design and manufacturing.

Rosco, unique among gobo manufacturers, creates the dichroicglass in its own facility. This in-house process allows better controlboth for one-, two- and three-color glass gobos and for the fourlayers (CMYK) of the high-resolution color gobos, as shown here.

ORDERING A CUSTOM GOBORosco is the worlds largest manufacturer of gobos. It has a dedicated and knowledgeable Customer Service team just forcustom gobos. The sole mission of this team is to make the process of getting a custom gobo easy and error-proof. Thesethree steps will insure a successful outcome:

1. Email your artwork to [email protected]

The artwork can be in almost any form, but designs with very fine details should be no smallerthan 3" x 3" at 150dpi. Remember, a high quality image requires a high quality file to work with.You should consider using Adobe Illustrator for line art (eps or ai formats) and Adobe Photoshopfor images that contain gradients or greyscale elements (psd or eps files). For high-quality, full-colorgobos, a good rule of thumb is to submit 1800pix x 1800pix files. Almost any file format such asjpg, psd, ai, tif, pct, or png is acceptable. Do not send WordArt or CAD files.

If your digital file makes use of fonts, you must indicate the name of the fonts used or send uscopies of the font files to use.

Scans of drawings or illustrations used for custom steel gobos can be faxed to1-512-388-0196.

Make sure to submit color gobo artwork in color. For images with exacting color match requirements,referencing Pantone colors will ensure the best color match possible.

2. Specify what you need and when

Indicate the quantity and size gobo you need for each design you submit, as well as the lighting fixture(s) you will use to project them.

If you will be using an uncommon fixture, please make sure to indicate size of the Outer Diameterof the gobo as well as the Image Area . You can always check our website for more informationabout your fixture. Or, contact our technical service department and well assist you in trackingdown the correct specifications.

Indicate whether the gobo will be a front (most common) or rear projection.

3. Place your purchase order with your local Rosco dealer.

Your dealer will provide us with all the details. But to be safe, please tell us when you need the gobos, where to shipthem, and, most importantly, how to contact you if we have questions

Steel Standards on Glassany Rosco steel gobo designs can be made on black & white glass and shipped to you injust 2 days! This is an ideal solution when using modern moving lights that cannot accept steel gobos.

Keystone and Distortion CorrectionWhen hanging positions make it impossible to project your image without distortion, Rosco artists will assist in adjusting the artwork to compensate. Call for more information.

Rush ServicesSometimes there just isnt enough time in the production schedule. If you need a gobo delivered onSaturday, flown in on counter-to-counter service, or just wont make our published cut-off times, just ask. Well alwaysdo whatever possible to make sure you get what you need, when you need it!

ProofsWant to make sure the gobo we make is exactly as you need? Request that a proof of the gobo be sent to youbefore manufacturing. Well gladly send you the tooling for you to approve. Just keep in mind that any delays in theapproval process may delay delivery of your gobo. Proofs are not possible for same day rush or on color glass rushes.

Roscos Indexing Rotators are controlled throughDMX512 and the DMX addressing facility is built into the unit. DMX/DC ControllerThe Rosco DMX/DC Controller provides power and speed control for the Double GoboRotator or other variable speed effects. It is intended for remote control via a DMX512signal. The output circuitry of Roscos DMX/DC Controller is identical to that of its fourchannel Variable Speed Controller. Speed, range, bi-directional drive, load compensa-tion and output protection are all maintained. The advantage is in accuracy andrepeatability as well as the convenience of the DMX system. Effects can be programmedwith other lighting directly into a cue sequence on a suitable lighting console.

iPro Image ProjectorRoscos iPro Image Projector offers users an easy, inexpensive solution forprojecting photographic quality images in a theatrical or event environment.The iPro Projector is a precisely engineered accessory which fits the iris slotsof most modern spotlights. It hosts iPro slides, which can be prepared fromvirtually any electronic art work.

There are three ways, all low cost, for preparing the iPro slides you willneed. First, you can order one or more from Roscos iPro slide library. Thelibrary is available for perusal on the Rosco web site. Or you can create theartwork on your own computer using Adobe Photoshop or similar software.Send the artwork to Rosco and a finished assembled iPro slide will be on itsway back to you within 24 hours. The third method, for the unapologetic

do-it-yourself technician, is to use your own transparency film and your own printer to create the image and a Rosco OneTime Slide Kit to assemble the finished iPro slide.

The iPro Image Projector fits as an accessoryinto the iris slot of,among others, an ETCSource Four, Altman Shakespeare, Strand SLor Selecon Pacific spotlight. Fitted with an iProslide, the system will deliver bright, visible fillcolor images that will last between 15 and 50hours.

X24 X-Effects ProjectorThe X-Effects Projector provides large scale, 3-D effects previously unavailable to lighting designers. The device utilizes a 200-watt EnhancedMetal Arc source, whose short arc allows for an output of 5000 lumens,and a 7000 hour lamp life. The color temperature is similar to a Xenonsource at 6000K, but with nearly two times the luminous effectiveness (orefficacy). The projector is available in two configurations, DMX on boardand analog.
