Introit and Kyrie Requiem Gabriel Faure (1854-1924)

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam; ad te omnis caro veniet.

Rest eternal grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them. To thee praise is due, O God, in Zion, and to thee vows are recited in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer; unto thee all flesh shall come.

Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

L : The Lord be with you. P : And also with you. L : Let us pray.

O God, the Maker and Redeemer of all believers: Grant to the faithful departed the unsearchable benefits of the passion of your Son; that on the day of his appearing they may be manifested as your children; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever. Amen.

The Proclamation

First Lesson Isaiah 25 : 6-9 On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

L : Hear what the Spirit is saying to the people. P : Thanks be to God.

Psalm 116:10-17

1. How shall I repay the LORD * for all the good things he has done for me?

2. I will lift up the cup of salvation * and call upon the Name of the LORD.

3. I will fulfill my vows to the LORD * in the presence of all his people.

4. Precious in the sight of the LORD * is the death of his servants.

5. O LORD, I am your servant; * I am your servant and the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds.

6. I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving * and call upon the Name of the LORD.

7. I will fulfill my vows to the LORD * in the presence of all his people,

8. In the courts of the LORD'S house, * in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah!

Second Lesson I Corinthians 15:50-58 What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled:

‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ ‘Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved,* be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

L : Hear what the Spirit is saying to the people. P : Thanks be to God.

L : The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John: P : Glory to you, O Lord.

Holy Gospel John 5:24-27 Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life. ‘Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; and he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

L : The Gospel of the Lord. P : Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Prayers of the People

Let us pray. Merciful God, we remember those who have gone before us, who have stood by us and helped us, who have cheered us by their sympathy and strengthened us by their example; help us so to live, that in dying, we may rejoice with them in the promise of a glorious resurrection; through your Son our Redeemer. Amen. Father of all, we pray to you for those we love but see no longer. We thank you for the peace and light you bestow upon them; in your loving wisdom and almighty power continue to work in them the good purpose of your perfect will, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Jesus, our friend and Redeemer, on the first Easter Day you stood among your disciples as the conqueror of sin and death, and spoke to the them of your peace. Come to us in your risen power and make us glad with your presence; and so breathe your Holy Spirit into our hearts that we may be strong to serve you, for the glory of your great name. O Lord, support us all the day long of this troubled life, Choral Setting by Carl Schalk until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, Lord, in your mercy, give us safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen

The Ministry of the Sacrament The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory Gabriel Faure

Domine Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae, libera animas defunctorum de poenis inferni, et de profundo lacu. Libera eas de ore leonis, ne absorbeat eas tartarus, ne cadant in obscurum. Hostias et preces tibi,

Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of the dead from punishment in the inferno, and from the infernal lake. Deliver them from the mouth of the lion, lest the abyss swallow them up, lest they fall into the darkness. Sacrifices and prayers to you,

Domine, laudis offerimus. Tu suscipe pro animabus illis quarum hodie memoriam facimus. Fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam, quam olim Abrahae promisisti, et semini eius.

O Lord, we offer with praise. O receive them for the souls of those whom today we commemorate. Make them, O Lord, to pass from death to life, as you have promised of old to Abraham and his seed.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord is here. God’s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to offer thanks and praise. It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son. You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us. When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit.

We give you thanks that even in death we are safe in Christ’s victory over death. Though under judgment we rest in our Savior’s hand; sorrowful, yet we rejoice; for he is the hope of everlasting life to all who put their trust in him. Therefore with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Sanctus Gabriel Faure

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and earth are filled with your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

All glory and thanksgiving to you, holy Father; on the night before he died your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when he had given you thanks, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper he took the cup; when he had given you thanks, he gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me. Glory to you, Lord Christ; your death we show forth; your resurrection we proclaim; your coming we await; Amen! Come Lord Jesus. Therefore loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power, may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise. Blessing, honor and glory be yours, here and everywhere, now and for ever. Amen. The Communion As Christ teaches us we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.

Libera me Gabriel Faure

Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death, on that fearful day when the heavens are moved and the earth when thou shalt come to judge the world through fire. I am made to tremble, and I fear, when the desolation shall come, and also the coming wrath. That day, the day of wrath, calamity, and misery, that terrible and exceedingly bitter day. Rest eternal grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them.

The Blessing and Dismissal of the Community God, grant to the living, grace; to the departed, rest; to all the world, peace and concord; and to us and to every faithful servant, life everlasting: and the blessing of God almighty, Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with you and remain with you for ever. The congregation is asked to leave after a few moments of silence

In paradisum deducant te angeli, in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres, et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem. Chorus angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere aeternam habeas requiem.

May the angels lead you into paradise, may the martyrs receive you in your coming, and may they guide you into the holy city, Jerusalem. May the chorus of angels receive you and with Lazarus once poor may you have eternal rest.
