What a great opportunity to network with other like minded businesses. As a speaker it was valuable to me to find others working on the some of the same challenges I face. There’s clearly change a-foot on how we do business - and it’s great to have a front row seat! -Speaker Feedback

Themes

Regional experts showcased examples of different building types that have pursued high performance goals and benefits they have achieved as a

result. High performance includes a focus on District Energy, a cost-effective, reliable and environmentally-friendly heat source for use in

commercial buildings. We highlighted Seattle 2030 District members committed to reducing energy by 50% in aggregate by the year 2030 with examples from regional leaders Amazon, McKinstry, Pike Place

Market and the Westin. Finally, the Principles of Green Chemistry and Engineering form the basis for building and product designers to ensure

that products used in materials are safe, can flow in a circular economy and have a beneficial impact on natural resources.

Green Building/Greening Your

Workplace

Our focus was on equity and social justice becoming a core element in local government and private sector sustainability plans. Investments in

green building, clean energy, and mobility present major opportunities to address inequities related to health, access to education and

employment, and housing. We looked at what specific steps should be taken to strengthen recruitment of people of color to serve on boards of environmental organizations and corporations; how investments

in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean tech can be used to create living-wage jobs and address broader inequities and how

employers create pathways to sustainability jobs and leadership roles for populations who have been under-represented.

Social Equity and Diversity

With UW Link opening and Metro restructuring in NE Seattle, private transportation services and mobile apps are providing an important link to

businesses and services. With Light Rail expanding throughout the region, NE Seattle is a model for how these transportation services will integrate

and change how people commute, shop, and travel. The newest transportation service innovators demonstrated how they are creating value and pushing behavior change to benefit businesses and local

communities in 2016. Another key focus on Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) action plans that work in the region showed how to improve

the bottom line while changing employees travel behaviors to reduce environmental impact.

Innovative Transportation

We learned how leading organizations achieve the triple bottom line in the continuous improvement culture of the Toyota Production System using

the 4P’s: Philosophy, Process, People & Partners, and Problem Solving. A broad, vibrant local manufacturing sector provides a more diverse

base of living wage jobs, a more fertile landscape for entrepreneurs, and enormous opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of production and distribution. Urban manufacturers showed how they’re

innovating and collaborating to keep manufacturing in the city and working to reinvent and reimagine this long-standing sector to create a

next-generation industry with environmental sustainability and living-wage jobs at its core.

and Urban Manufacturing
