Chapter 1The Awareness
Boom, boom! The loud noise startled me awake. I pulled my awareness to the present reality, to the comfort of the soft green grass on which I had fallen asleep. Above me the sky filled with clusters of sparkling lights, exploding and blossoming into circles of red sparks that turned blue, then green, before turning white, and finally, coal black, as the embers limped back to earth.
Boom, boom, boom! The fireworks had begun. The night sky danced with color, as one explosion after another illuminated the heavens, rippling across the ocean of the dark night before falling like raindrops hitting the surface of the sea.
Ooh! Ahh! The merry crowd gasped at the magnificence of the fireworks. “Gorgeous night for the fireworks,” a sweet voice broke into my consciousness.
“Yes, very nice,” I replied, turning to share my pleasure in the heavenly spectacle. The blooming bursts of sparkling lights reminded me of the fireworks back in Ytinu. I remem-

bered the time before Ytinu, when my life had a predictable structure. But now, my imagination was obsessed with a world that might not even exist.
“Best we’ve seen in several years,” a man on the far side of the woman commented. “A display this spectacular is unusual.”
“Yes, they have outdone themselves,” the woman added. I stared at the couple, for they reminded me of Ailill and Aislinn. Across my imagination I galloped, releasing a mad dash through the streets of my mind.
“Are you from around here?” I inquired, curious about their accents.
“No, we live far away from here. We’re visiting a friend here in Colorado,” the young woman said.
Lying there in the warm evening, I felt something floating above my body, its ghost-like energy centered above my chest. Was it an apparition like that of the lion in the Ivy Hole? What the heart sees, the eyes will visualize. Colorless, yet strong and full of energy, it left me with a hollow sensation, the same feeling I had when Morgan first shared his story.
“What’s the story behind the Temple castle?” I had inquired.
“On the road between the Black Forest and Water’s Edge, there is an old castle. It’s known as the Temples’ Court, the place where Kathryn and William Temple once reigned.”
Ytinu is real. The hell with dreams. I need to go back!

Chapter 1 - The Awareness
Gone now was the worry I was holding tight. Set free, I no longer lay in fear. It felt as though the sparkling lights in the sky had intentionally illuminated my heart’s direction.
“Wow!” the young woman exclaimed at the next burst of lights. Turning to me she said, “It soon be time for us to go home. Are you going somewhere special this summer?”
“I don’t know. No plans yet. I would like to travel to England to visit an old friend.” I was thinking of Mr. Wayrick, a gnome, I had met in Ytinu.
The last fireworks faded away as we picked up our blankets and food. The couple and I headed to our cars, continuing our conversation.
“London would be a fun place to visit, but we’re headed to Ireland,” she answered.
“Have you holidayed there before?” the young man inquired.
“Oh yes, many times,” I said as my thoughts drifted back to the emerald isle.
“What city do you fly into?”
I paused, lost in my dreams.
“Oh yes. Sorry. Shannon, and then I take a bus to Midleton in County Cork.”
“Are there interesting sights nearby to visit?”

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” I offered. “There are many things to examine all over Ireland,” I rephrased my response.
“Do you call Ireland home?”
“I have many friends there that are like family. Yes, I guess I do call it home.”
We reached their car and said our goodbyes. “Have fun on your trip,” I called, as they pulled away, waving goodbye.
I walked away deep in thought. I needed answers, but first, I needed to visit Mr. Wayrick and Mrs. Loopwyn. I wandered over to the local coffee shop, acknowledging the colorful character sitting on the bench by the front door. I was reaching for the handle on the white doors, when his words stopped me.
“Knock, knock,” he said. A sign that said Knocker hung around his neck.
“Knock, knock, knock—three times before any disaster,” repeated this man in tattered clothing. Visible through the long, frizzy, gray beard that covered his face was a mouth full of brown, stained teeth. His beard was tied with end knots and laced with gold beads. Two shiny brown eyes peered through the mass of gray hair.
“They call me Knocker. I give advice to those searching for the answers to their dreams.” He patted the seat next to him. At the suggestion, I took a seat.
“The sky lies covered with a blanket that lets light through the many tiny openings,” he said, pointing up. “There is a duck, a deer, a bear and a dragon,” he added,

drawing in the air with his finger. I recalled Ysatis the gnome telling a similar story about the constellations.
“Are you an astronomer?”
“No, I am a stargazer,” he laughed. “My friend, Sam, is the astronomer.” Knocker waved to someone inside the coffee shop. A short man with a polished, bald head appeared through the white double doors. “What do you need, Knocker?”
“My friend here was asking about the night sky.”
“Knocker’s got his own names for the constellations. I’m Sam, the owner of the coffee shop; I’ve seen you in here a few times. Do you live nearby?”
I reached out to shake his hand. “Hi! I’m Sean. I live only a couple blocks from here.”
“Sean wanted to know if you was an astronomer?” Knocker chimed in. “I told him you were the real deal, and I’m only a stargazer.”
“He makes me out the specialist.” Sam chuckled. “I took a couple of classes in college and enjoy the night sky, but I’m no astronomer.”
“Knocker has his own views on what to call the constel-lations,” I laughed.
“Yes, but he’s more of a fortune teller, predicting the future for people,” Sam returned.
“My practice is predicting information about a person’s life,” Knocker said modestly. “The choices of your fortune

are encoded, to be identified by practicing insight. The difference between religion and foretelling is that foretelling is the term used for forecasts, whereas religion is appealing to a deity or spirits to change the future based on faith or values.”
Our conversation was interrupted by someone entering the coffee shop. Knocker broke the silence. “Sam is a green person.”
“What do you mean, Sam’s green?”
“No, no, he is not a green person. His aura is the color green,” he explained. “Green is the color of nature and symbolizes energy, harmony, freshness and fertility. He is a peaceful and naturally kind person.”
“I identified green with being Irish, but I assumed it meant nationality, not color,” Sam laughed. “What color is Sean?”
“Sean is yellow. Yellow is the color of sunshine and reflects happiness, intellect, and energy. He is a smart person, who brings joy to the world.”
“Thank you, Knocker. What color are you?” I asked.
“I’m the color of the air, transparent as an open book, sightful, and trusting. I’m also a loyal, forthright, and honest person with the ability to form images and ideas in the mind, especially of those things never seen or experi-enced before,” he answered.
“Where were you a year ago when I needed you?” I asked.

“Somewhere telling people their future,” he laughed.
“Have you been to Ireland?” Sam asked, pointing to my T-shirt. It read I Was Irish Before It Was Cool.
“Oh yes,” I said, looking down at my shirt. “I’ve been there several times. I normally fly to England and catch Air Angus to Shannon. From there I travel by car to Gortna-crue near Midleton in County Cork. Curragh Wood is one of my favorite places to hike.”
“Is there a Jameson distillery nearby?” he asked.
“About a five-minute walk,” I laughed.
“Do they still have a farmers’ market there on Saturday mornings?” he asked.
“I don’t know. I’ve never been there on a Saturday. Generally, I’m across the ridgeline.”
There was a sudden silence. With a shocked look, Sam scowled in my direction and hesitated before speaking. “I know no one who has ever mentioned going across the ridgeline. My uncle, Wayrick Johnson, runs the Johnson Pub. His regular clientele are local farmers and fishermen. His pub won the traditional Irish music award in 2004. My aunt said she married him because he had the cleanest bar counter, she’d ever seen. I’ve heard of the ridgeline, but I’ve never met someone who has found the gate key.”
I had no idea how to respond. “Where does your uncle live now?” I asked, breaking the stillness.

“In the west of England, near the city of Ilfracombe. Last I heard he was at the Crescent House Hotel, but he moves around a lot.”
“If you have the address, I’ll look him up when I get there,” I replied. Sam walked back into the coffee shop to find the address.
“Knock, knock, knock, three times before a trip,” Knocker interjected.
“So what’s your insight on my trip, Mr. Knocker?” I asked.
“You carry the answer on a paper that you keep in your pocket. Friends are seeking you, as you search for a reason, not for a response. The gift you hunt for is in your heart.”

He smiled from ear to ear as Sam returned. “To see my uncle?” Sam questioned with a puzzled look.
“Yes, and more,” I added, as he handed me a slip of paper that read Wayrick Johnson, 48 Fore Street, Ilfracombe, U.K.
“Thanks very much.” I turned back and waved before I walked too far away. I overheard Sam ask, “Knocker, what does that mean?”
“Not much. Just that he’s off to explore a new world,” Knocker laughed as he waved in my direction.

Chapter 1 - The Awareness
pocket and suddenly recalled what Queen Aislinn’s aunt, Tillra, had said: “Light runs through light.” “What does that message mean?” I struggled for an answer. Do the message in the bottle and Tillra’s message hold the same meaning?
“Kristina considers you a member of the Temple family. Your gifts challenged her,” Tillra had said.
“But I am not a member—” Why had she stopped me in mid-sentence?
“By not following Kristina, you are letting her go. Letting her go is saying goodbye. This will allow her to find her own strength and understand your compassion,” I recalled Tillra’s enigmatic explanation.
I fell into deep thought. I needed to find out who the Temples were. And I needed to know why they frightened Kristina. Mr. Wayrick should be visiting England; maybe he can explain. I had said yes to a visit. If Lor were alive, he would have an answer. But he was gone. Mrs. Lisann Boovenan, a good friend of Lor, would know of the Temples’ Court. Meeting with Mr. Wayrick should put me on a heading on my journey to discover the story.
A shooting star cut across the sky in front of me, right across the constellation Leo, the Lion. The star Regulus, the “Little King,” lay at Leo’s feet in the nighttime sky, if I recalled my astronomy lessons. This lion needs to find Mr. Wayrick in England. That would be my first stop, in going home.

Chapter 2Exploring New Places
My brother was busy working in the garage the next morning when I approached him.
“Going somewhere, eh?”
“How did you know?”
“You’ve got that traveling look on your face. Where’re you off to?”
“London. I want to spend some time catching up with some friends before going on to Ireland.”
A cup of coffee was calling my name, and I was off to my favorite local coffee café. A warm breeze accompanied me along the path past the creamery with the best ice cream in all of Colorado. Their pralines-and-cream and rocky-road persisted as my favorites. The building, which had sustained over fifty years of business, had once been part of a larger dairy operation, where over a hundred cows were milked daily back in the days. Nowadays, a truck

delivered milk and cream from a plant thirty miles away. The changes in my city somehow seemed too modern. I waved a car through at the stop sign, before strolling across the intersection.
It’s crazy, how you can go for months without speaking to someone, but still they cross your mind every day. It had been that way for months after my return from Ytinu. If it wasn’t Kristina, it was Aislinn or Ailill. I missed Lor. Why, after forty years did he die the same day as his friend, Mr. Devan Boovenan? I reached the coffee shop. No Knocker at the front door. I looked around the corner. His cardboard shanty was no longer there. Feeling uneasy, I recalled the bottle in my pocket. Was it calling me home?
Sam was nowhere in sight either. Kathryn was working behind the counter, mixing lattes and smoothies for the large crowd.
“What will it be, Sean?”
“Straight American coffee,” I answered. “Medium?” she asked automatically.
“Yes please,” I said, looking for an empty seat.
At the counter was an empty seat with a sign, piquing my curiosity. It read: This empty chair is in honor of Larry, a longtime patron of the coffee shop. Sam met him on opening day and they became great friends. Larry landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-day, June 6, 1944. Larry befriended many who passed through these doors. His dream was for peace in us and others. “It is a world that now shares your dreams if you choose,” was Larry’s favorite quote. Vet Housing Donations, in Larry’s name, are being collected in a jar at the register.

Kathryn was watching me read the sign. “He was a great guy, sitting for hours in that seat, talking to everyone and anyone. Larry taught Sam how to cook the house specialty,” she said, wiping away a tear.
“What is the house specialty?”
“Don’t you know?” she laughed. “Sam calls it Irish eggs. They’re green. We originally used goose eggs, but now we use chicken eggs and add a concoction made from pureed spinach. Sam makes it up by the gallon. As the eggs cook, any kind—over easy, scrambled, boiled—we add the natural coloring. Would you like to try some?”
“Sure. Make them scrambled, with toast and coffee.”
Soon the meal arrived with green scrambled eggs and Irish soda bread. I understood why Larry never left the coffee shop; the food was scrumptious. It was like eating Lor’s cooking all over again. I wondered why I’d ordered only coffee drinks in all the times I’d been here.
“So how is it with goose eggs?” I asked.
“I tried fixing them once. Too soft and runny. They made me sick. The second time, Larry fixed them, and they were better than chicken eggs. Larry had a way with food.”
“Sean, me boy,” a familiar voice called, entering from the kitchen. “How do you like the house special?”
“These are great, Sam,” I laughed, gulping down a forkful of eggs.

“We fried the soda bread, another one of Larry’s recipes,” Sam added.
“Did you see Knocker this morning?” I asked.
“No, he came in last night, put a dollar in Larry’s jar and disappeared. This morning his shanty box was gone. Once in a while he goes south to see friends. Would you care for more eggs?”
“No thanks. I need to get something done before my trip to England.” I paid for my meal and dropped a five in Larry’s jar.
“Oh, here’s my uncle’s phone number. I forgot to include it last night.” Sam handed me a piece of paper. “If you can’t find him at home, try calling. He likes to fish at the docks. Have a good trip.”
I headed back to my brother’s house to pick up my car. Heavy dew still covered the grass. I rounded the path to see a lake in the distance. Sparkling lights danced in the cattails. I wondered if the fairies might be at play. No, no. You’re in Colorado. Don’t focus on Ytinu. Focus on what you need to get done this morning!
I wanted to pick up several gifts. A wedding gift for Bradaigh, a windup flashlight for Diggory, a book of Irish poems for Aislinn. But what to get Ailill? How about a pair of binoculars?
I decided on a white porcelain plate depicting a rainbow and a thatched-roof house for Bradaigh and Pegg. I entered the nearby china shop, to be greeted by a very large young man, his large body out of proportion with his tiny head. He stood seven feet tall and weighed over 400 pounds.

“Good morning.” His small voice surprised me. “What can I help you with?” His trendy, casual attire—sport shirt and jeans—surprised me, too.
“I’m looking for a special plate: white porcelain, painted with a thatched house and a rainbow.”
“I’m holding one in the back room,” a woman’s voice echoed from behind a curtain.
“You’re in luck,” said the man, with a giggle.
From the back room entered a young woman. She was nearly as large as the man, to my surprise. She stood over six feet and weighed only slightly less than the guy. She was carrying a plate.
“Would this work? An old man ordered it a year ago, but never picked it up.”
“Could his name be Larry?” I questioned.
“Why yes, how did you know?” she asked with a curious look.
“He’s a friend of Sam, the owner of the coffee shop down the street.”
“Well, it’s yours now. It’s his gift to you. I was concerned I might have to throw it out, but I didn’t want to, because Finn did a great job of painting it. The house belongs to newlywed friends back in Ireland, their first home.”
Smiling, I said, “It will be a present for my friends, a newlywed couple in Ireland.” We both laughed.

“Would you like me to box it?” the man asked.
“Can I pay you for it?”
“No, it’s already paid for,” she answered.
“My name is Sean,” I introduced myself and offered my hand.
“My name is Madalyn, and you’ve met my husband, Finn. Some days he’s got a memory like an elephant, others he’s like a bull in a china shop.” She swaggered his way with a big hug.
“When are you leaving for Ireland?” Finn asked, as he wrapped the box.
“I’m leaving early tomorrow morning.” I suddenly remembered how many more things I needed to get done. “Thank you very much.” I wished them well and walked out the door. A bell rang as I left the shop. Laughing at myself, I thought, “A fairy just got their wings.”
Jones Sporting Goods was next on my list. Behind the binocular counter a young man the same age as—Oh, what was the new kitchen help’s name? The one who had taken over Lor’s duties—
The clerk put a stop to my daydreaming. “How might I help you?” he asked.
“I’m looking for some good binoculars. What do you recommend for general use?”
“Binoculars have two numbers. One shows magnifica-tion power and the other lens diameter. 7x35 binoculars

have a magnification power of seven. That means that an object will appear seven times closer than with the unas-sisted eye.” He knew his stuff.
“There are three types: full-size, midsize, and compact. The full-size ones are 8x42 or 10x50, great for bird watching, but too big and heavy for backpacking. A midsize pair—7x35 or 10x50—is the best all-around choice for wildlife and sports. They’re a bit heavy for backpacking too. Last is the compacts, 8x25 and 10x25. They’re the best for daytime outdoor activities and the lightest and smallest binoculars for backpacking.”
“I’ll take the compact 10 x 25,” I said, pointing to the last one he’d laid on the counter.
“Good choice. Shall I box them for you?” he asked.
“Yes please,” I replied. “By the way, do you stock windup flashlights here?”
“Yes, step this way.” He walked to the other end of the counter. “You must do a bit of serious hunting.”
“Nope. I’m just going where they don’t use radios or batteries.”
“Here’s one with a radio.” He shook his head. “No, I guess you don’t want it…but here’s one with a slick, silver body and a black hand crank—flashlight only.”
I picked it up and tested the hand crank. It worked. “I’ll take it. And could you please box it, too?”
“Knives, guns, ammo?”

“No, where I’m going, they don’t use those things,” I smiled.
I concentrated on Aislinn’s gift next. Back near the house I remembered passing a trendy Irish store.
“Do you have any Irish poetry books?” I inquired.
“Yes, several shelves in the back room: James Joyce, William Butler Yeats, Oscar Wilde, Charles Sullivan…” The clerk directed me through several displays of Irish knickknacks to the back room. Finding a volume of Yeats, I opened it at random.
“All the words that I utter,And all the words that I write,Must spread out their wings untiring,And never rest in their flight,Till they come where your sad, sad heart is,And sing to you in the night,Beyond where the waters are moving,Storm-darken’d or starry bright.” 1
The lines reminded me of sitting with Kristina, watching the night sky in the enchanted forest.

Snapping out of my daydream, I mumbled, “Why yes, it reminds me of an old friend from Ireland.”
“May I gift wrap it for you? I have some nice paper with shamrocks, and I can top it with a green satin bow.”

That would be lovely, I started to say, in reaction to her cute Irish accent.
Instead I said, “Yes, please,” and watched her prance away, her long, auburn hair dancing as she skipped from the room.
“Here you go. The woman receiving this gift is a lucky person,” she smiled. I became lost in her beautiful green eyes and gentle smile.
“Thank you. Yes, she is. She is a queen,” I laughed. She joined me in the laughter, not knowing that my gift was for the Queen of Ytinu.
Completing my purchases, I headed home to finish packing. Placing the gifts in my travel bag, I double-checked all my required documents. There on my desk was a note from my brother and an envelope.
“When I was at Sam’s coffee shop today, he gave me this envelope for you. Remember, home is where your heart is. You’re welcome here any time.
Blessings, and have a safe and fun trip.
Bro”
I opened the envelope to find the most extraordinary poem, one that foretold a new journey.

I could hear the north wind howling outside. I put an extra blanket on the bed as I felt the temperature drop-ping. Morning would come early, and changes occurring outside were echoing the changes within my heart. But the new coat of changes would not protect me from the new adjustments I must make. The forces driving me to action also kept me from completely understanding what might be happening next.

About the Author
Poet and writer George McGaughey grew up in Colorado, but also called El Paso, Texas home for many years. Aft er retirement, he traveled the U.S. and Canada in his RV for four years, accompanied by his artist wife, Peggy, his trusty fl y rod, and an unquenchable thirst for adventure.
He and Peggy now live full-time in Green Valley, Arizona with their cat, Polly.
