Golden Nuggets Lynda Duncan - Need denim? Working on a scrappy denim quilt or making assorted denim Christmas gifts?

Please, let me help! My stash overflows & I have two bags of assorted denim scraps---cut up bluejeans, pockets, belt loops, zippers, & even some yardage. If you are interested, send email to [email protected] & I’ll arrange delivery!

Zoe Meegan - Chaperoning--Not for the Faint of Heart!

I'm visiting my 93 year old Aunt in Connecticut and get an email from my daughter asking if I'd be interested in chaperon-ing my 10 year old granddaughter's 4th/5th grade field trip to the "gold country." Apparently they're having difficulty finding enough parents to chaperone. So I'm thinking, gold country, why that's right up the hill from me in Coloma. Why not? I reply back that it sounds like fun.

The next correspondence I’m copied on is an email sent from my daughter to the teacher responding to her request for veri-fication of my fitness to serve. And here's what it says:

“My mom is a very fit and active 65 (pilates, water aerobics, bocce ball, pickle ball). She is, of course, retired and great with kids of all ages. She helped chaperone Maia's slumber birthday party last May and managed to survive that, plus the girls loved her.”

Apparently with this glowing report, I pass my first test, be-cause the next email I get is from the teacher outlining what I need to do in order to chaperone. And here are the hurdles:

Get fingerprintedCopy of your driver's licenseCopy of your car insuranceCopy of your Good Driver's Record. This can be obtained from the DMV website (https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal /dmv/detail/online/dr/welcome). A direct print out from the website can be turned into the office.Signed Driver Form (attached below).

I remember in the ‘good old days’ when if you wanted to chap-erone a class field trip (which by the way was a day trip to the post office, sewage plant, bakery, bowling alley, etc.), you just let the teacher know and showed up. Not any more.

Meanwhile, I receive an email with a link to the school’s Web site, where I now can finally read all the details about this gold country field trip. It’s five days (yes, you read that correctly) and not right up the hill in Coloma, but in Sonora which is 2 hours away. This is news to me, but what scares me the most is it says “be sure to bring your sleeping bag!” But I will not be deterred. After all, they are now depending on me.

So when I get back from Connecticut, I begin checking off the items on my list. Number #1, get fingerprinted. I find a place

in Town Center to get this done. I show up and almost drop dead when he tells me it will cost $90. I’m astounded. I tell him I held a Top Secret clearance when I worked at Lockheed and all I wanted to do was chaperone my granddaughter’s field trip! Wasn’t that good enough. “No, that was Federal these fingerprints are from State.” Anyway, I get fingerprinted and check #1 off the list. Items #2, #3, and #5 are easy, but that leaves #4--obtain a Good Driving Record from the DMW. Now mention of an interaction with the DMV is even scarier to me then the thought of needing a sleeping bag. But onward...

I get online with the DMV and right away run into trouble setting up a personal account (no surprise there). I continue to try for a couple of days, but to no avail. Finally, as I have decided that I will most likely need to take a trip to the DMV office, I see a telephone number at the bottom of the Web site to call for help. So before I head off, I give them a call and, sur-prise of all surprises, after no more than three rings, an actual person picks up the phone and walks me through the process. Two dollars later and with my Good Driving Record in hand, I can now check off #4.

So now all documentation has been obtained and submitted and now I just need to round up that sleeping bag. But before I head off, I get a call from my daughter telling me that Maia is a little apprehensive about me coming. She’s afraid I might cramp her style. So with that thought in mind, I make a prom-ise to myself to give Maia a wide berth whenever possible.

I meet the kids up in Sonora and spend a great 5 days at the Old Oak Ranch. I’m thrilled to find that the weather is perfect, the sleeping bags are to use for cover ON my BED, and the kids are fantastic--all sixteen of them. We are up at 7:00 and lights out by 9:00. I’m in charge of a cabin with four girls, which is an absolute blast.

Though the process to get cleared for chaperone duty was nothing like we experienced in the ‘good old days,’ there were still echoes from those simpler days. . .

Boys still have cootiesGirls still have that high pitched scream that will peel paint Boys can and will go 5 days with no showerThe water balloon game still gets out of control and ev-eryone gets wet Girls think the boys are plotting an attack on themBoys are oblivious

I had a ball. I think that the other chaperones and teacher were amazed that this old lady could not only keep up with them and the kids, but often out did them in stami-na and enthusiasm. And on our way to breakfast on our final day, Maia came up to me and asked me if I would sit at her table for breakfast that day. I guess I was successful in giving her space.
