The School of Application was established at the Marine Barracks in Washington, DC, on 1 May 1891 by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Charles Heywood. Nine months later, the first class graduated with seven newly commissioned officers. New lieutenants were instructed in weapons, tactics, and troop leadership: the art of war.

The school was either closed or experienced interruptions in training between 1898 and 1916; either the students transferred to combat duty or the school was relocated. In 1908, the school reopened in Port Royal, SC. (Parris Island), where it was renamed the Marine Officer’s School. In 1910, the School moved again, this time north to Norfolk, VA. In 1918, the school was opened for the first time in Quantico following the establishment of Marine Corps Base Quantico and was renamed the Marine Officer’s Training Camp.

In 1922, The School of Application became known as The Basic School (TBS), with the first class consisting of seventeen 2nd lieutenants and eleven warrant officers. TBS moved again in 1924 to Philadelphia while construction continued at Quantico. While in Philadelphia, TBS trained approximately thirty officers per year. By 1933, TBS’s curriculum abandoned any dependence it previously had on Army and Navy Doctrine.

During World War II, TBS grew in size and varied the curriculum to meet the demands of the war. The peace following the war would not end the changes at TBS. In 1948, the first regular black officer began training followed by the establishment of the Woman Officer Training Program in 1949.

As hostilities in Korea developed, the impact was keenly felt at TBS. Most notably, the training curriculum was shortened from nine months to seventeen weeks. The shortened version of the officer course earned TBS graduates of the Korean era the title of “Special Basic Classes.”

TBS moved to its present home at Camp Barrett in 1958, with Heywood and O’Bannon Halls the first buildings constructed aboard Camp Barrett. The development of Camp Barrett continued into the 1970s with buildings dedicated to heroic Marines who distinguished themselves throughout our Corps’ rich history. As the Vietnam conflict erupted, officers were needed immediately and TBS once again shortened its program by five weeks.

On Dec. 20, 1973, the Woman Officer School aboard main side Quantico was disestablished and women became permanent residents at Camp Barrett. In 1977, female lieutenants were fully integrated into the training program at TBS. That same year saw establishment of the Infantry Officer Course, a formal occupational school for teaching specialized infantry skills.

Today, TBS trains over 2,200 new officers annually in six Basic Officer Courses and one Warrant Officer Basic Course, companies which convene year-round. To meet these increased demands, TBS is in the midst of a comprehensive Master Development Plan that will significantly change the landscape aboard Camp Barrett over the next five to seven years.

The Basic SchoolColonel Everly is a native of Inglewood, California. He graduated from the University of Southern California

with a BS in Business Administration.

As a company grade officer, his operational assignments were Forward Observer, Guns Platoon Commander, Headquarters Platoon Commander, Assistant Executive Officer, Fire Direction Officer, Artillery Liaison Officer and Battery Executive Officer, 3rd Battalion, 10th Marines; Target Information Officer, 26th MEU (OPERATIONS NOBLE ANVIL and SHINING HOPE- Albania, OPERATION JOINT GUARDIAN- Kosovo, and OPERATION AVID RESPONSE – Turkey); Assistant Operations Officer, Operations Officer and Battery Commander, 1st

Battalion, 12th Marines (OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM- Philippines/ Thailand, and the Unit Deployment Program (UDP)- Okinawa, Japan).

As a field grade officer, his operational assignments were Executive Officer, 1st Battalion, 11th Marines (OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM); Operations Officer, 11th Marine Regiment; Commanding Officer, 5th

Battalion, 11th Marines.

His supporting establishment assignments include instructor and Staff Platoon Commander (SPC), The Basic School; Faculty Advisor and Expeditionary Operations Officer, 11th Marine Regiment; Commanding Officer, 5th

Battalion, 11th Marines.

His joint duties include Deputy J3 Operations Officer, Joint Inter-Agency Task Force for Former Regime Elements (OPERATION IRAQ FREEDOM); Operations Directorate (J3), Current Operations (J33), Joint Staff; Junior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense.

Colonel Everly’s civilian and military education include: US Army Field Artillery Officer Basic Course (with honors), US Army Field Artillery Career Course (with honors), Marine Corps Command and Staff Seminar Program, MS in Management and Leadership from Webster University, MS in Financial Planning from Oklahoma State University and MA in Strategic Security Studies for the National Defense University.

He is married to the former NaTasha McEachin of Fayetteville, North Carolina and has three children, Aubrey Maya, Elijah James and Faith Liberty.

Sergeant Major Fausto H. CabreraSergeant Major

The Basic SchoolSergeant Major Fausto Cabrera enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 1995 and completed recruit training

at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego, California (CA). Upon completion of basic training, Private Cabrera reported to Assault Amphibian School Battalion at Camp Pendleton, CA, where he received the military occupational specialty of 1833, Assault Amphibious Vehicle (AAV) Crewman. In June 1996, Private First Class Cabrera reported to 3D Assault Amphibian Battalion (AABN), Camp Pendleton, CA and was assigned as an AAV crewman. In October 1997, Lance Corporal Cabrera deployed with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).

In October 1999, Sergeant Cabrera reached his end of active service and departed the Marine Corps. In July 2000, he reenlisted in the Marine Corps. In September 2000, Sergeant Cabrera reported to 3D AABN, Camp Pendleton, CA and was assigned as an AAV Commander and Section Leader. In March 2001, Sergeant Cabrera deployed with the 11th MEU.

In January 2003, Sergeant Cabrera reported to MCRD, Parris Island, South Carolina, for Drill Instructor duty. He was assigned to Company M, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion and Special Training Company, Support Battalion. Staff Sergeant Cabrera served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Chief Drill Instructor.

In May 2006, Staff Sergeant Cabrera reported to 3D AABN, Camp Pendleton, CA and was assigned as an AAV Section Leader. In April 2007, he deployed with the 13th MEU and participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom 6-8.

In January 2008, Gunnery Sergeant Cabrera was assigned as an AAV Platoon Sergeant. In July 2008, he deployed with the 31st MEU. In February 2011, he deployed with the 13th MEU.

In January 2012, First Sergeant Cabrera reported to 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and was assigned as the Company First Sergeant for Company B. In December 2012, he deployed on a Unit Deployment Program (UDP) to Okinawa Japan. In February 2014, he was assigned to Headquarters and Service Company. In June 2014, he deployed on a UDP to Okinawa Japan.

In February 2015, First Sergeant Cabrera reported to Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry West, Camp Pendleton, CA and was assigned as the Company First Sergeant for Company B.

In January 2016, Sergeant Major Cabrera was promoted to his current rank, reported to Marine Tactical Air Command Squadron 38, Miramar, CA, and was assigned as the Squadron Sergeant Major.

In January 2018, Sergeant Major Cabrera reported to Combat Logistics Battalion 11, Camp Pendleton, CA and was assigned as the Battalion Sergeant Major. In May 2019, Sergeant Major Cabrera deployed with the 11th MEU.

In March 2020, Sergeant Major Cabrera reported to The Basic School, Quantico, Virginia where he currently serves as the Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Cabrera’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3rd award), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3rd award).

Sergeant Major Cabrera is married to the former Nicole S. Matsumoto from San Jose, CA.
