A View from the OutsideThe following account of Maimonides Leadership Program graduation was provided by Rabbi David Silverman to Rabbi Feldman and the BJ staff. We thought the community deserved to see the impact it has on those we share ourselves with:This week I participated in two Emory University Maimonides Leadership graduations hosted by Rabbi and Mrs. Yaakov Fleshel. Over 30 students spoke of the highlights of the their semester long program, sharing with each other which class or experience touched them the most. The array of students’ Jewish backgrounds was far reaching. In the course of their short extemporaneous speeches almost all of them mentioned the unique experience of coming into the Beth Jacob neighborhood for their shabbaton requirement. They never encountered anything quite like this community.People initiated conversations with them, opened up their homes for meals and sleeping over, and prepared an abundance of delicious food. Most of all, the students were impressed with the quality of family life that they witnessed up close: families sitting down to eat, parents interacting with their children, and kids coming and going out of each other’s homes. Many of the students remarked that they would like to create this type of environment for their own families someday and they realize that a community suffused with Shabbos is an essential component.May your strength be increased for creating such a model community!Rabbi David Silverman
