1. Originality, Expression, and Communication of Ideas: USE OF TYPOGRAPHY in RADIAL DESIGN

Student demonstrates insufficient ability to create original artwork. Letters are simple and have little to no detail. Overall design does not make full use of the space and may not be evenly traced.

Student demonstrates limited ability to create original artwork. Letter design is simple with minimal detail. Overall design may not make full use of the space and/or be evenly traced.

Student demonstrates ability to create original artwork. The letter design used in each “wedge” of the wheel is unique, but may lack in detail and/or complexity. Overall design makes full use of the space.

Student demonstrates ability to create insightful, original, and expressive artwork. The letter design used in each “wedge” of the wheel is extremely detailed and complex with overlapping or interlocking shapes. Overall design makes full use of the space.

2. Understanding of Art Concepts and Skills: PLACEMENT OF COLORS AND MIXING TERTIARY COLORS

Student demonstrates limited knowledge of the color wheel. Some colors are incorrectly placed and some tertiary colors are incorrectly mixed. Complementary colors are not used and project appears unfinished.

Student demonstrates basic knowledge of the color wheel. Most colors are arranged correctly around the wheel. Most tertiary colors are mixed and placed correctly. Complementary colors are not used or are used incorrectly.

Student demonstrates adequate knowledge of the color wheel. All colors are arranged correctly around the wheel. All tertiary colors are mixed and placed correctly. Complementary colors used minimally or not at all.

Student demonstrates strong knowledge of the color wheel. All colors are arranged correctly around the wheel. All tertiary colors are properly mixed and properly placed. Complementary colors are placed correctly and increase the complexity and visual appeal of the design.

2. Understanding of Art Concepts and Skills: USE OF TINTS, SHADES

Student demonstrates limited understanding of how to mix tints and shades. Half or more tints and shades are mixed and/or placed incorrectly. Work is unfinished.

Student demonstrates basic understanding of how to mix tints and shade. Most tints and shades are mixed and placed correctly. Some tints and shades may be missing.

Student demonstrates understanding of how to mix tints and shades. Tints and shades are mixed correctly, but not thoroughly. Tints and shades are placed consistently.

Student demonstrates strong knowledge of color mixing. All tints and shades are correctly and thoroughly mixed. All tints and shades are correctly and consistently placed in each wedge.

Student demonstrates minimal understanding of how to apply paint. Coverage of the paint is messy and/or incomplete. Marker outlines are messy and/or incomplete.

Student demonstrates basic understanding of how to apply paint. Coverage of the paint is not consistent and may appear messy or streaked. Marker outlines are incomplete and/or messy.

Student demonstrates essential understanding of how to apply paint. Paint is, for the most part, applied evenly with few mistakes. Outlines cover most edges. Overall craftsmanship is neat with minimal streaks.

Student demonstrates accomplished understanding of how to apply paint. Paint is applied evenly and neatly. No pencil lines show and the designs are outlined neatly with marker. The overall craftsmanship on the artwork is outstanding.

5. Self-Reflection and Making Connections (Answer questions on the back of the rubric!)

Student demonstrates little ability to think critically and discuss what did and did not work. Student is unable to support observations with evidence from artwork.

Student demonstrates minimal ability to think critically and discuss what did and did not work. Student supports 1 observation with evidence from artwork.

Student demonstrates ability to think critically and discuss what did and did not work. Student supports 2-3 observations with evidence from artwork.

Student demonstrates strong ability to think critically, make insightful connections, and discuss what did and did not work. Student clearly supports all observations (4 or more) with evidence from artwork.

Student rarely uses class time to develop his/her artistic skills. Student is infrequently productive and completes few tasks with a positive attitude.

Student uses some class time to develop his/her artistic skills. Student is occasionally productive and completes some tasks with a positive attitude.

Student uses most class time to develop his/her artistic skills. Student is productive, focused, and completes tasks with a positive attitude most of the time.

Reflection Questions:

What was the most unique or interesting thing about what you did? WHY? (Be sure to use supporting evidence from your artwork.)

What was the main problem you had to solve while you were working? How did you try to solve the problem?

If you could travel back in time to re-create this project, what would you do differently? What changes and/or improvements would you make? WHY?

1. What are the primary colors and what makes them important?

2. How do you mix the secondary colors?

3. What is a tint?

4. What is a shade?
