Mission: DarlingtonChurch attendance in the UK has been

dwindling for years, especially among young people.

Darlington is a small city located in North East England about 60 miles from the North Sea.

Darlington has a population of roughly 100,000 (over 40% are over the age of 45 and over 30% are under the age of 24).

While in Darlington we discovered young people with real needs who are searching for real answers. Unfortunately, many of them have turned to physical pleasures (i.e. sex, drugs, alcohol) or Wiccan or Pagan teaching to give them what only Christ can provide.

Darlington Baptist Tabernacle Is a small older church that according to Pastor Gareth Evans has seen

better days. Years ago it had a thriving youth ministry and a reasonable membership by

UK standards. Unfortunately, in the 10 years prior to the current pastor being called, the

membership fell from 58 to 26, the congregation grew older, and the church lost most of the youth and children.

Over the last three years membership has slowly grown and is currently at 35 due to a number of new initiatives including an Asylum-seeker drop in centre, kids church, and several missions involving teams from the US.

Attendance can vary from week to week but is substantially larger than it was three years ago.

The visit of a team from Champion Forest Baptist Church helped draw teenagers into a Café church initiative that was flagging and into Sunday evening services. The church has sought to sustain this work but it struggling in terms of sufficient workers. As a church they need help to develop the opportunities presented to them.

The pastor of the church, Dr. Gareth Evans, is forced to act as preacher, pastor, youth leader, children’s worker and administrator.

He has a vision to reach the city of Darlington for Christ but new developments are unsustainable in the long term without fresh workers.

The church body needs to be trained in relationship evangelism and equipped for ministry in this century not the last one.

Outreach Opportunities - SportsSports ministry established in July 2009.The mission of the sports ministry is to

engage the youth of Darlington through the use of Ultimate Frisbee, Football (soccer), and American Football in order to build connections between the youth and the church.

The relationships that are built between the youth and the church members through sports hopefully will lead them to come to Café Church and give us other opportunities to share Christ with them.

Outreach Opportunities – Café ChurchCafé Church is a relatively new ministry

established by Dr. Evans in order to try and engage the youth of Darlington.

The mission of Café Church is to provide the opportunity for the church members to engage teenagers in spiritual discussions in a relatively non-confrontational way.

While the CFBC mission team was in Darlington we were able to invite over 20 youth to come to Café Church who have real needs and are searching for answers to life's questions.
