    Crowdsourcing Creative Graphic Designers

    The new logo Telepizza

Lately it is building quite a stir with the theme of creative crowdsourcing. The relationship of this type of crowdsourcing with designers is obviously difficult, and the fact that TelepizzaAdtriboo been used to find a new logo for 1,000 has not helped. The straw that broke the camelis the very ministry of Education and Culture has sought a new image for the National Instituteof Performing Arts and Music through the same platform, rewarded the winner with the sameamount: 1,000 .

In this situation, and as a researcher of crowdsourcing, I have thought it necessary to raise aseries of questions to a designer the situation critical to obtain as complete a picture of thesituation.

For coincidences of life, recently I came in contact through Facebook with Gustavo Solana, creative director at the company "Hache Communication" on it ... so I found my scapegoat.

In the next post I will give my personal opinion about all this.

    Interview

Henry: Before I begin my reflection / "interrogation" (, D), to clarify that I am neither for noragainst. I investigate the phenomenon of crowdsourcing and what I want is to get a picture asreal as possible the same: both the good (any), and the bad (which I'll tell you).

From what I read in your comments, you are totally against crowdsourcing (at least in the worldof design is concerned). Although I think I can, what are the fundamental reasons to reject it in

full? I think it will confirm what has already been said by some authors, but I'd rather hear yousay. This is true at all: does not say an "author", says one concerned.

Gustavo: I think the concept of crowdsourcing has not been rejected in full, which is refusing tocomplete is like you are using. Without going in difficult discussions about what is advantages

and disadvantages, will agree that every tool has a particular purpose if that use is changed ordistorted at the end of the tool is perverted and greatly diminishes its function.

E.: Another question that arises is if your feeling of rejection is a general feeling. Do you think other designers as well, your colleagues in the company, etc..?

G.: Facebook, Twitter, social networks ... are echoing a discomfort created by the improper useof crowdsourcing is doing. We understand that taking advantage of a group specifically for apurpose of an overall benefit is a very justifiable cause, wikipedia, for example. But that takesadvantage of a situation so extremely sensitive as the current, so the only benefit is the one withprivate enterprise, bursting the prices of everything a professional sector, it does not seem quite

    fair.

E.: As you know, one of the advantages posed by proponents of crowdsourcing is that it givesopportunities to those who do not. Through platforms such as Adtriboo, any student of design(for instance), you can do a job (a logo or whatever) and make a profit at both economic andcurriculum that would otherwise not be possible. Ignoring the issue of financial rewards on offerare not excessively high, what do you think you as a designer of this?

G: This is the bait. According to the American Design Award "... hundreds of young or novicedesigners spend countless hours of work and creativity by designing logos, websites, or collateralproducts for this type of competition not knowing whether they will be rewarded for their efforts,

since 99% of the contestants never wins. Graphic Designers around the world have had to work hard to maintain a standard of ethics and speculative prices and demerits work as soon as made."I can understand the difficult task ahead for students to improve their resume, portfolio andopportunity to find work. All, repeat all we had to go through the same stage, and there was stillthe crowdsourcing. There was effort, persistence, motivation, desire encouraged you prepareyour own proposals and create a decent portfolio. Now think how fast raw, immediate, andthanks to platforms that use crowdsourcing indecently, spread the bait miserable alms projectsprices for hundreds of future coming designers, including many fans will clap competing likegladiators.

E.: In this sense, due to the participation of many people in this type of process thanks (or blame)of crowdsourcing, many authors (eg Jeff Howe, the American journalist who coined the term)say what now plays professionals is a way of working change of business model. In one of hisbooks as an example the situation that photographers were faced with the emergence of iSotckPhoto. This is a website where you upload digital photos to buy them for a few dollars. Nomore paying large amounts specialized photographers, but there are many novice or amateurphotographers can take pictures you need. How do you see this change proposed by this author(and others) in your sector? Impossible? A utopia? Will it involve starving yourself?

G.: The model is changing is clear, not by the presence of crowdsourcing, but by how wecommunicate globally and how to run the questions and answers between the two channels. Butperhaps before submitting to any professional sector to give up with a new business concept, why do not we consider that we want to become? I mean, if even now I needed a particulardesign could go to any of the agencies in my city, I saw his portfolio, valued his work and hired

their service. It now appears this "supposed" new business model and wants to eliminate theprofessional calling them "intermediaries" to get it as a platform. To get a go your self. Then tohave on staff boasts 200,000 "possible" Designers (I say possible because I have no way to check titularmente) and best, without any contract ... that's the new model? Convert studios, agencies, independent designers, professional future slaves crowdsurcing platform?

E.: Finally, as you know, crowdsourcing has more applications than design. Through platformssuch as InnoCentive can solve complicated problems (usually scientific in nature) or as Injoinetcrowdfunding platforms can finance projects, companies, etc.. it would be impossible to dootherwise. Have an opinion about it or, do not touch your professional area, giving you more orless the same?

G: That is exactly, and no other, the model should adhere to the concept of crowdsourcing.Through filtering methodology can employ a specialized group to solve problems that canbenefit local, national or global. Likewise, the crowdfunding as financing method is an excellenttool, and I repeat, using it in an ethical and responsible at all times know where you are going theconstant economic thousands of users are paying. Certainly poses a danger, but could be anexcellent platform in a time when economic instability and the excesses of the banks have turnedoff the tap to many promising projects and ideas. If you think about it, the crowdfunding nolonger a tool that draws on the emotions and needs of individuals to benefit others.
