CALL TO WORSHIP Rev. Rogers

PRAYER

HYMN 649 Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound amazing grace

OLD TESTAMENT READING Psalm 91 You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot. Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them. With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation.

THE PRAYER OF ST. FRANCISLord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console,to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

NEW TESTAMENT READING Romans 12:9–21Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mu-tual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” No, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

WORDS OF FAITH

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

AMAZING GRACECM

As was his custom, the author wrote this hymn to accompany his sermon on 1 Chronicles 17:16–17, preachedon January 1, 1773; he called it “Faith’s Review and Expectation.” Much of its current popularity comes fromthis now-familiar tune, an association that began in 1835.

Page 6: Graydon Andrew Krapohl · Infantry officer in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, he met and married his wife Greta Krapohl, a U.S. Army Nurse Corps

Graydon Andrew Krapohl of Ann Arbor, Michigan left this life on April 15, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with Non-Hodg-kins Lymphoma. He died at home, as was his wish, with his wife and daughter by his side.

Graydon was born in Ann Arbor on Decem-ber 23, 1960, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Andrew J. and Patricia A. Krapohl. As a child, Gray-don lived his formative years with his parents and four siblings in Ann Arbor, Omaha, Nebraska; Montevideo, Uruguay; Marinette, Wisconsin; and Jackson, Michigan. After graduating from Napoleon High School, he attended the University of Michigan where he graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Liberal Arts. In addition, he earned his MBA from George Mason University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U. S. Army War College. Graydon later became an adjunct faculty member at the Army War College. He also completed numerous other leadership and military technical training courses.

Graydon served honorably for 30 years in the United States Marine Corps, both active duty and reserve status. He achieved the rank of Colonel. While stationed in Hawaii, as an Infantry officer in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, he met and married his wife Greta Krapohl, a U.S. Army Nurse Corps Officer. They moved several times during their decades of military service, the longest time in Washington, D.C. It had always been Graydon’s hope to be able to move back to Ann Arbor where there had been a long family association spanning five generations with the University of Michigan.

In his civilian career, Graydon worked in the Federal, nonprofit, and private sectors where he provided expertise in information technology, strategic planning, organizational design and development, program management, and leadership. Graydon was a natural leader and had the unique ability to take on complex projects and issues, create a plan, mobilize resources, and implement successful solutions.

In Loving Memory of Graydon Krapohl

Page 7: Graydon Andrew Krapohl · Infantry officer in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, he met and married his wife Greta Krapohl, a U.S. Army Nurse Corps

Graydon proudly served as a member of the Ann Arbor City Council from 2014–2018 representing the 4th Ward. And before that, served as a City Parks commissioner. Graydon lived in the Lower Burns Park neighborhood with his family and cared deeply about his neighbors. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. As the only elected military veteran in Washtenaw County, Graydon worked tirelessly advocating for Veteran’s rights and benefits. He also served proudly as a trustee and service officer at American Legion Post #46.

Graydon’s love for his family was deep and abiding. He was very involved in his daughter’s life and was an active participant with Grace in club and high school volleyball, lacrosse games, and several other school activities. As the “G3’s” the family enjoyed special times together traveling the world, camping across the country, and several trips to Disney World.

He will most be remembered as a loving husband and father, as a thoughtful and respected public servant, and for his desire to make the world a better place.

Graydon is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Greta, and daughter, Grace. He is also survived by his parents Andrew and Patricia Krapohl, sisters, Tracy (Doug) Short, Kaye Krapohl, Kelly Krapohl, and Walter Krapohl, mother-in-law Gretchen White and sister-in law Susan (Steve) McClane. Nieces and nephews Lindsay (Denny) Schroeder, Jenna (Austin) McClane, Ryan (Megan) Short, Hayley Short, Cara McClane, Monica McClane, and Steven McClane. Also, grand-nephew, James Schroeder. Graydon was preceded in death by an infant son, William Andrew.

A Celebration of Life will take place in Ann Arbor later this summer.

The family would like to thank Albert Quiery MD, Anne O’Reilly, RN, and the extraordi-nary healthcare team at the Rogel Cancer Center–Michigan Medicine who treated him with unparalleled expertise and kindness. Additional thanks to Stephen Ansell MD, PhD, Lindsey Peterson MSW, and Gina Lange, RN at the Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota and Mark Roschewski, MD and his team at the National Institute of Health (NIH) for giving Graydon a chance to receive the latest cutting-edge treatment options and the “gift of time.”

Memorial contributions may be made in Graydon’s memory to:

The Fisher House Michigan, an organization that he felt a deep personal connection to, in support of serving veterans and their families. (https://www.fisherhousemichigan.org/legacy-gifts/krapohl)
