LETTER FROM THE EDITORWelcome to the first issue of Greek Chic! I am very ecstatic to be involved with a wonderful publication meant just for young women like you, sorority women. Greek Chic was developed with not just the idea of topics and inter-ests that are relatable for sorority women, but also to act as a communication devise to branch out and connect sorority women nationally.

This issue of Greek Chic dissects the topic of sisterhood and how that bond is one that will remain for life. By interviewing various Greek women and gaining their insight on sisterhood, the vision for this issue was created.

When I first came to college, I felt like I didn’t fit in. I didn’t have a lot of friends at my college, so making new friends was a challenge I took on. As I started to form new friendships, the concept of Greek life was introduced to me. I met a variety of sorority women during rush week my freshman year, and the void within myself became filled with sisterhood. On Bid Day I made one of the best decisions of my life, joining Alpha Phi (ΑΦ). As I became actively involved in my sorority, I also got involved with my college’s Panhel-lenic executive board, and eventually became president. By meeting all the women involved in Greek life, I saw that sisterhood is something that devel-ops beyond organizational limits. All Greek women want to excel and make a difference. By branching out and meeting other Greek women we become aware of different opinions and values, making us become more well-round-ed and aware. We continuously learn and grow from one another due to the concept of sisterhood.

I hope this issue gives some new insight into the connections you have made, or will make, during your journey through sisterhood! Welcome to Greek Chic, and happy June!

BONDS OF SISTERHOODLAURA O’DONNELL

When Bobbi Phelps (AΦ) first came to college she was placed in a residence suite with five other roommates. These roommates were the ones that she bonded with during her first few weeks at college. While Bobbi made new friends, the concept of Greek life was introduced to her. As she went out to meet all the different sororities to see what Greek life was about, she met some very im-portant young women that would forever change her life.

“My sisters have helped to shape me into who I am today. Wherever I go I know I will always have the love my

sisters continuously give me. It brings me comfort just knowing that,” said Bobbi when she was asked about what kind of an impact her sisters have had on her. The bond Bobbi has with her sisters is unquestionable, but what is questionable is what defines sisterhood?

Determining what exactly sisterhood is can be difficult. There’s a famous, anonymous quote that says “From the outside looking in you can never understand it; from the inside looking out you can never explain it.” While this quote does speak the truth in some aspects,

digging deeper is always a good way to clearly define something. Emilee Danielson-Burke (ΔΖ), the director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at Shippensburg University, defines sis-terhood as—“a continuum, something that grows and there can be different levels of sisterhood within a chapter. It develops, and when it’s new it isn’t anything more special than when it’s older, but it’s just something that can grow when you grow.”

Sisterhood can be established from any organization’s roots. Just take a look at your own organiza-tion’s rituals. “Part of being in a so-rority is being subscribed to common goals and beliefs, and it has given me a values-based way to live,” remarked Emilee on how her ΔΖ sisterhood has travelled with her after college.

While sisterhood can be explained at an organizational level, it can be a little messier when it comes to looking at it from a larger scale, the Panhellenic level. Taking a look back on the Pan-hellenic creed, developed by the National Pan-hellenic Council (NPC), we see it read, “…We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character, inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life.” The part that stands out in this section of the creed is, “inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic

life.” Through developing strong bonds within your own soror-ity, you develop your character. But by branching out and creating close ties with other women in different orga-nizations, that development of character grows deeper. Emilee believes this is true—“It’s rewarding because you can unite a whole group of people and find a common ground. I think as women, especially young women, it’s important to have allies and understand that oddly though, we are socialized to compete with each other for partners, men, or whatever; we don’t have to be in com-petition with each other for success. We can support each other to reach our own goals, so that we are achiev-

ing success not at the expense of someone else. I think Panhel-lenic spirt and sisterhood really enforces that we can all succeed together.”

Bobbi has strong Panhellenic bonds with many sorority women on her campus. Her roommates from her fresh-men year joined

sororities as well, but different soror-ities than the one she joined. “We all still hang out a lot! It’s nice to have friends in other sororities because we can give each other different

insights and fresh ideas.”I asked a couple of Panhellenic wom-en to describe Panhellenic sisterhood in their own words. The responses ranged from “a bond between girls in different organizations”, “soul sisters” and “girls with different letters, but no matter what we’re all Greek.”

Essentially what it boils down to is our Panhellenic community may consist of multiple organizations, but we all come together to form one community, a Greek communi-ty, and one that contains powerful bonds of sisterhood. All of us want to excel, we want to make a differ-ence, and we care about others and their well-being. By branching out and meeting other Greek women we become aware of different opinions, different values, making us become more well-rounded and aware. We continuously learn and grow from one another.

So what is Panhellenic sisterhood? Panhellenic sisterhood is the friends you make during your journey as a sorority woman; the feeling of having a solid unit of girls from other orga-nizations. It’s about accepting each other through trust, respect, loyalty, and friendship. It’s not just four years, but for life.

The rapid expansion of smartphone use has become society’s double-edged sword. When paired with social net-working mobile applications, a smart phone can be used as an infinite link to the outside world by call, text, email, post, or tweet, but it can also be exploited as a digital security blanket enabling users to avoid personal social interaction by engaging anonymously with the public through a small lit screen.

From college campuses coast to coast, it seems that everyone has their smartphone in hand. Millennials are often touted as the plugged-in gener-ation, an accurate assumption ac-cording to the Pew Research Center’s 2013 Smartphone Ownership Report where it revealed that 79% of people between the ages of 18 and 33 own a smartphone and 81% of them are active users on Facebook. Facebook may still hold the title for the most recognized and world-renowned social media giant, but rising social network

competitors have gained the attention of millennials and critics alike.

YikYakLaunched in 2013, Yik Yak has quickly gained momentum among millenni-als, with over 1,500 downloads daily. Yik Yak is a hyper-local social me-dia application that allows users to anonymously create and view posts within a 1.5 mile radius. Created with the college crowd in mind, the close proximity of users makes for more in-timate and relevant social networking experience. Along with posting con-tent, Yik Yak users are able to Upvote or Downvote other user generated posts, access a local news feed to keep up with trending topics locally, and view content and user profiles in other Yik Yak communities. Yik Yak was cre-ated with the college audience in mind, and is not intended for middle or high school aged audience.

The anonymity of the Yik Yak app that helps foster a personally relevant user experience, may also cultivate a harassing environment which con-cerns both college students and college administrators. After countless exam-ples of threats of violence and cyber bullying, many school districts have tried their best to ban the mobile appli-cation. A recent situation involved a threat of extreme violence at Towson University located in Maryland. On Oc-tober 4, the Towson University fresh-

men threatened to carry out an attack, posting on Yik Yak that it would be “Virginia Tech part 2.”

“I’ve always used the app [Yik Yak] to keep up with events around campus and to connect with my friends, Tow-son is a big campus and there’s a lot going on around here,” says Towson University student Holly Loftice, “I was shocked to hear that such words of violence and terror were posted to Yik Yak, when most of the time it’s trivial stuff. I downloaded the app when it came out last year; it helps keep me connected to everyone which is hard when you go to a big school like Towson.”
