The reported incidents of abuse are way too high and it is admitted that many such acts do not get reported. Throughout the world, the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children cam- paign runs from 25 November, In- ternational Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, through to International Human Rights Day on 10 December. Included in this 16 day programme is World AIDS day on 1 December and the International Day for those with Disabilities on 3 Decem- ber. South Africa is still home to high levels of violence against its wom- en and children, despite a world- renowned Constitution and a leg- islative overhaul that safeguards women’s and children's rights. The government, business, civil society organisations, faith-based organisations and the media are all participating in the drive to in- crease awareness of the negative impact of violence and abuse of women and children. The campaign also aims to: Challenge the perpetrators of vio- lence to change their behaviour. Involve men in helping to eradi- cate violence. Provide survivors with information on services and organisations that can help lessen the impact of vio- lence on their lives. The international theme for this year’s 16 Days campaign is “From peace in the home to peace in the world: Let’s challenge militarism and end violence against women. 16 Days of Activism National Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene presented awards at the GHS prizegiving last week. Minister Nene congratulates N Makhoba on being awarded academic honours, as well as the top awards in life sciences, maths, engineering and physics. Minister of Finance in Greytown IT has been remarkably quiet on the Umvoti Municipal front recently, so the Greytown Gazette submitted some queries to the administrator, Martin Sithole, in order to be able to inform residents as to what is hap- pening, or not happening, in the dis- trict. An advertisement several weeks ago in the Greytown Gazette for a tender to purchase a 4l V6 double cab for the municipality triggered a lot of concerned comments as to why such a vehicle was needed and the huge cost thereof. In reply to its question as to the need for such a vehicle, the Administrator respond- ed: “According to the information I got from the Fleet Management Unit, the councillor who raised the matter is confusing two separate is- sues. I’m told that the vehicle that was budgeted for was advertised with the specifications as per the approval by council. The 4l V6 Dou- ble Cab advertised is an insurance claim replacing a similar vehicle from Protection Services which was written off some months ago.” A report was published on 22 Oc- tober referring to the possibility of five Umvoti Councillors being dis- missed or suspended - four from the ANC and one from the NFP. In reply, the administrator states that this is a matter which is handled by the re- spective parties at political level. Since June last year, Umvoti Mu- nicipality has been minus an Execu- tive Committee and, since Septem- ber 2013, under administration. There was a short lived feeling of relief and expectation when the election of the Executive Commit- tee, speaker, mayor and deputy was announced to take place at the stat- utory meeting called on 10 October. However, the first election was for speaker and, much to the surprise of the majority of councillors, Coun- cillor M Yengwa of the IFP was elected. Before any further elections could take place, the ANC councillors walked out, despite the positive in- troductory remarks from the ad- ministrator that the council had moved forward to working together for the good of the people. He said no memorandum of agreement had been signed by the political parties but was very positive it would soon be. However, the next attempt to hold an election for the outstanding posi- tions at a statutory council meeting on 22 October also fell flat on its face. Updating, the Administrator says: “The election of the Executive Committee is dependent on the con- clusion of the settlement agreement as per Cogta’s recommendation. I have had sight of the document and have sent my input to Cogta for it to be finalised. I have a meeting with them scheduled for the 20 th and amongst other things to discuss will be the finalisation of this matter.” It is now seven months since the general election but there are still a number of election posters up in the town. In this regard, the admin- istrator said he had requested the municipal manager to instruct the Engineering department to remove the posters and invoice the respec- tive parties on the costs. On the question of the suspension of the two senior officials, CFO Mar- tin Swanlow and manager for good governance, following a committee council meeting on 15 August, it is reported that they are still on sus- pension while undergoing disci- plinary hearings. The administrator said that he believed that there have already been two postponements of the hearings but hopes the matter will be finalised soon. The delay in the start of Exten- sion 14 housing was due to the fact that the municipality did not have a Land Disposal policy. The draft policy has now been compiled and once processed by Council prepar- atory work could start in January next year. NO MAYOR but a 4L V6 Double cab

A THIRTEEN year sentence forher daughter's killer was too little- it should have been a life sen-tence, said Liz Kubie of Her-mannsburg last week after theDurban High Court had imposedthe sentence.

Kubie’s daughter Tanya wasstabbed to death by her then hus-band, Terence Govender, in 2009in their rented home in Phoenix.

Govender admitted to JudgeMahendra Chetty that he had re-peatedly stabbed Tanya andclaimed he was highly intoxicatedat the time.

He had fled the scene and goneinto hiding but was arrested thefollowing day. In his guilty plea,Govender claimed he had killedhis wife because she belittled himand had informed their landlordof their domestic disputes. He hadbeen very angry after she had ver-bally abused him in front of otherpeople, he had pulled out a knife, stabbed her, then ran away to hissister’s house. He was arrested byPhoenix Police.

Govender’s bail was revoked inFebruary 2012 when he failed tomake a court appearance.

Liz Kubie (66) said she was dis-traught at the light sentence im-posed on Govender.

UYASIKHULUMANI isiZulu?Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg is

proud to announce that we will onceagain be adding Zulu to the repertoireof languages offered at our school.

We are most grateful to our very ownStella Cockburn, a household name interms of Zulu lessons in the Umvoti dis-trict, for agreeing to takeon this excitingventure.

As from 2015, Zulu will be offered asan alternative option to Afrikaans firstadditional language in Grades eight to10.

Unlike the rest of South Africa whereAfrikaans is widely spoken, a number ofour pupils from the Natal Midlands orCoastal regions, both English and Zulu-speaking, have had little to no exposure

to Afrikaans tuition at primary schoollevel and, for this reason, we will bephasing inZuluat juniorhigh school lev-el, with the aim of gradually taking itright up tomatric level over the next fewyears. Because Zulu will be offered asa first additional language (previouslysecond-language) and not at the easierthird-language level, pupils who chooseto takeZuluasasubjectwillhave tohavehad Zulu lessons at primary school andwill have to write a proficiency test toensure that they will cope with the stan-dard of Zulu being taught.

Languages open doors and we hopethat thisaddedbenefitwill be justanoth-er feather in the caps of the prestigiousacademic results that our learnersachieve.

WORLD Diabetes Day took place on 14 Novemberwith the aim of raising an awareness and knowledge of diabetes which currently affects 396 million individuals throughout the world.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unableto properly use and store glucose which backsup in the bloodstream causing one's blood glucose (blood sugar) to rise too high.Referred toas a life style disease, diabetes is a world wideescalating health crisis

There are a reported 14.7 million diabetic casesin subSaharan Africa and it is increasing. The UNGeneral Assembly in 2011 declared that the prevalence of diabetes has reached "epidemic proportions throughout the world

There are two major types of diabetes. In type1 the body completely stops producing any insulin,a hormone that enables the body to use glucosefound in foods for energy. People with type 1 diabetes have to have daily insulin injections to survive. This form of diabetes usually develops inchildren or young adults, but can occur at anyage. Insulin dosages are carefully balanced withfood intake and exercise programmes.

Type 2 diabetes is considered a lifestyle diseaseand but . The good news is that Type 2 Diabetesis a preventable disease. In fact, a large bank ofevidence supports the benefits of lifestyle interventions healthy diet and physical exercise toprevent the onset and development of diabetes1.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form ofdiabetes characterized by high blood glucose levels caused by either a lack of insulin or the body'sinability to use insulin effectively. Either the bodydoes not produce enough insulin or the cells ignorethe insulin. Insulin works in allowing the body touse glucose for energy When glucose builds upin the blood instead of going into cells, it cancause problems cells may be starved for energy.and over time, high blood glucose levels maycause eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart problems

Risk factors include: obesity, poor diet; physical

inactivity, family history of diabetes check outwith a clinic or doctor.

How to prevent the onset of diabetes: livinga healthier lifestyle; if overweight or obese starta diet and exercise regime that will help you dropthe kilos; stop smoking and drink alcohol in moderation. For people who have the condition it isimportant to take a holistic approach in managingthe disease. Exercise regularly, eat properly andensure that you have the correct support in termsof supplementation. Type 2 Diabetes is a progressive disease, but if you eat healthily, take supplementation, keep fit and take your medication asprescribed, it will help you live a long, healthylife.

The third type is gestational diabetes whichis a temporary condition occurring during pregnancy.

Early diagnosis is vital signs and symptomsinclude:

Unusual thirst.Frequent urination.Unusual weight lossExtreme fatigue,Blurred vision.Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal.If left untreated or not well managed, the high

levels of blood glucose associated with diabetescan can lead to a host of longterm complications among these are heart attacks, strokes, blindness, kidney failure, and blood vessel disease thatmay require an amputation, nerve damage, andimpotence in men.

It is important to obtain treatment early to prevent complications.Having diabetes does notmean not living a normal healthy life individualslearn how to manage it with the goal being tobring blood glucose levels into the normal range.

Diabetics have access to an enormous rangeof assistance and information there are lot ofthem out there who are successfully living fulllives through the awareness of how to cope

Learn to live with diabetes -early diagnosis vital!Graduation at

SIR,A couple of years ago, I recall that some

publicspiritedGreytonianundertookasur-vey on the “killer” Greytown/Pietermaritz-burg road.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate respond-ed forashortwhile, monitoring thehorren-dous state of driving on this road, and itdid improve.

But it did not last long.I am forced to use this road three to four

times a week because of business commit-ments and am absolutely appalled at thedeterioration of the standard of driving.Last week, for the first time in manymonths, there were some RTI personnelstanding comfortably at the Wartburg andNew Hanover points.

Whilst on the road, NP, ND, NUM, NKKand other registrations blatantly broke the

rules of the road. It’s normal to see a driver pull out to pass

on a double barrier line...and if he or shehas to pass several vehicles and there is ablind rise, even more so.

Those backbreaking humps near theCramond road - the no passing sign is ig-nored.

Speeding has become automatic, andwhat about those heavies as they beltdownhill.

At one stage, I know the Greytown Ga-zette requested passengers (not drivers) totake photographs for publication if theysaw blatant disregard of the road rules. Please, in the interests of saving lives andmaking the driving to and from less of anightmare for all, could this be done?

Cordwall Primary children visited Arcadia and performed their year end concert for theresidents. After the glitter and shine, the residents tucked into yummy treats .A big thank youto Arcadia for giving the children this wonderful opportunity to interact.

Cordwall chronicleACCORDING to theGoete Institute, the besttime frame for learning languages is be-tween the ages of three and five as, duringthis time, the brain develops very rapidlyand the nerves are forming a complex net-work of connections.

Thus children who grow up with morethan one language have proved to bemoreflexible and competent in their perceptionand most are able to learn further langua-gesmore easily than childrenwho grew upin a monolingual environment.

For this reason, all our Grade R and RRlearners have German lessons three timesa week and we would like to say a special

thank you to our volunteer workers fromGermany who are a great help in our kin-dergarten: theyprepare creative activities, helpwithextra lessons,accompanyourLit-tle Oaks on the daily bus, help with swim-ming lessons and much, much more.

Last weekend, they gave up their freetime to repaint the kindergarten's Germanclassroom a bright new colour so that Ger-man lessons for our Little Oakswill be evenmore fun in this bring and colourful envi-ronment.

IT looked like a commandoworm infestation on Saturday15 November but on closer in-spection, it was the KranskopFarmer’s Association that tookto thegolf course in theirannu-al golfing outing at St Cath-ryn’s.

This was their effort to raisefundsforGolf911whichservesthe community so well.

Golf 911 is the link, in thiscase, between farmers, securi-ty, SAPS, RTI, Eskom and theambulance services.Theothermost important link is withFire Hawk - the company thatsupplies the farmers with theearly fire warning system.

Now this fun day draws thechildren away from the schoolbooks, for just forashortwhile,to caddie, to laugh, to encour-age and in some cases coachtheir dads.

The ladies of the districtwere kept busy with a ribbon

embroidery course in the club-house.

Golfers from the home clubwere allocated non-golfingfarmers in a 3Ball Americanscramble, with three drivesper player to be used.

With a lot of tactical plan-ning, all golfers survived thenine hole competition and inmost cases, everybody seemedto have enjoyed themselves.

The green keeper and staffwere out early on Monday, closing the ‘newly’ formedcra-ters and flattening the newlyformed mounds...it was greatfun. The following tourna-ments lie ahead for members:

The Farmers Agri-CareMonthlyMug is to be played on29 November, our first Farm-ers Agri-Care mug for 2015season is tobeplayedonSatur-day, 13 December with theMug of Mug for the past yearon Sunday, 14 December.

Our family golf day away ison Monday, 29 December andthis year, we are going to playat Bosch Hoek and we havebooked three by four balls andcarts.

Entry is first come firstserved, the wives are welcometo join inandincreasethecred-it card balances on the Mid-landsMeander.Thecost forthegolf is R270 per player for thegolf and R230 sharing a cart.Format is four ball alliance, three scores to count and allthe scores on the shorts.

Please try andbookwithPietat 083 269 1661 or by emailthis week as we have to pay adeposit to secure the bookingat Bosch Hoek.

This Friday, we will be host-ing theUFPAendof fire seasonbraai, andmembers of the UF-PA need to RSVP to Brigit at076 154 1090 or 079 180 3539by Wednesday at the latest.
