The Land of the Dead in GrimFandango™ is a blend of imagesfrom Mayan and Aztec art, Mexi-can folklore, and film noir of the1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. For those whodon’t know, film noir is a film genrethat features hard-boiled detectives,hard-hearted, treacherous women, big guns, fast cars, labyrinthine plots, and snappy patter. The men wearbig hats, and everybody smokes*and drinks a lot.

The Land of the Dead, according to Aztec beliefs, was areal place where dead soulsjourneyed for four years until theyreached the ninth underworld, theirfinal home. To help the souls maketheir long journey, the dead wereburied with money, food, and even

dogs. Mexican folkloreadded humour and

festivity to thosebeliefs bycelebrating

specialdayseach

year whenthe dead

returned to visittheir loved onesas honouredguests. For theannual fiestas,papier-mâché

skeleton dolls were made anddressed in traditional andcontemporary costumes. Our hero, Manny, and the otherinhabitants of Grim Fandango’sLand of the Dead, are modelledafter these colourful skeleton dolls, called calaveras.

And what about Manny? Well,he’s not exactly hard-boiled —he’sjust led a less-than-perfect life and istrying to work off his “debt” byhelping out at the Department ofDeath. His job is to act as a travelagent, picking up souls from theLand of the Living (it’s called“reaping” because the Departmentof Death issues scythes to itsagents), and then selling the soulsthe best travel package possible toget them through the Land of theDead.

Then things go wrong forManny, and it’s all because of adame. He must hit the road to stopthe skells that have made thisafterlife into a cruel game, so thatgood souls everywhere can rest inpeace.

Welcome to the Land of the Dead

* For those who are disturbed by the amount of smoking in Grim Fandango, we offer two reasons: 1) wewanted to be true to the film noir atmosphere, and 2) everybody in the game who smokes is DEAD.

Think about it.

Playing the Game

MOVEMENTUnlike other LucasArts adventuregames, Grim Fandango does notuse the mouse for movement. Youcan manipulate Manny by using thearrow keys on your keyboard, yourjoystick or your gamepad. See pages19-21 for keyboard playing tips andkey commands.

You can play the game fromeither of two perspectives: CameraRelative and Character Relative. InCharacter Relative mode you moveManny as if you were Manny, fromhis viewpoint. This mode generally

works better for people using thekeyboard.

In Camera Relative mode youmove in respect to the camera. Thismode works best when playing witha joystick or gamepad. The modeyou'll prefer depends on what you are used to from playing othervideo games. At the beginning ofthe game, Manny is set to move inCharacter Relative mode.✷ To go forward (no matter whichway Manny is facing), use the UpArrow or move the joystick up. ✷ To go backward, use the DownArrow or move the joystick down.✷ To turn Manny right or left, usethe Right or Left Arrows or movethe joystick right/left.

If you choose, you can switchto Camera Relative mode bypressing Ctrl+M. In this mode,Manny moves in relation to thecamera.

✷ The Up Arrow (or moving thejoystick up) moves Manny north, away from the camera.✷ The Down Arrow (or movingthe joystick down) moves himsouth, toward the camera. ✷ The Right and Left Arrows (ormoving the joystick right/left) moveshim east and west at right angles tothe camera’s line of sight. You canalso move Manny diagonally bycombining two arrow keys or using1, 3, 7 or 9 on the number pad.You can move diagonally using thejoystick or gamepad as well.

In Camera Relative mode, there is no backward movement, and every time a camera anglechanges, there is a good chance youwill have to reorient yourmovement. In other words, ifManny is running north away fromthe camera down a long hall, andthe camera angle changes soManny is running south toward thecamera, you will have to change from the Up Arrow to the DownArrow if you want Manny to keep

running in the same direction. Youcan toggle back and forth betweenthe two modes by pressing Ctrl+M.

Vehicle MovementOccasionally, as Manny

journeys through the Land of theDead, he may use some specialvehicles that operate differently. Inthese cases, move the vehiclesaccording to Character Relative rules(Up for forward, Down forbackward, Right and Left forpivoting).

Vehicles may be on a track thatonly allows movement in twodirections.

To raise and lower the crane, use the Up Arrow and DownArrow keys. As soon as Mannystops using these vehicles, he willreturn to his previous mode ofmovement.

THE INTERFACEThe Interface in an adventuregame is the means by which youcommunicate with the character you play—the way inwhich you get the character to dowhat you want. In Grim Fandango, the Interface is invisible; essentiallyyour Interface is Manny himself.

When the game begins, Mannyis standing by his desk. Using yourarrow keys, walk him over until heis standing in front of the pile ofbooks on the table to the right. Nowturn Manny with the arrow keys alittle to the left and then back so heis facing the books.

You will notice that Manny’s headgoes down when it is directly infront of the books, and back upwhen he turns away. When Mannyis interested in something, he willmove his head in that direction: upif it is above him, down if it isbelow.

Make sure that Manny islooking at the books with his headdown, then press the 5 key on yourkeypad. This is the “Look At” or “Examine” key. Manny shouldnow say something about thebooks. If you walk him down to theend of the table, Manny’s head willbob down to see the deck of cards.

If you press 5 again, he willlook at the deck of cards. If youpress the Enter key (which is howyou use an item) or the + key(which is how you pick up an item),he will pick up the deck of cardsand hold it. Press + again to putthe cards in the Inventory. Now thedeck of cards is in Manny’sInventory.

If you press 0 on your number pad,you will access Manny’s Inventory, and Manny will hold his scythe.Press 6 on your number pad, andhe will bring out the next Inventoryitem, which should be the deck ofcards. If you press 4 on yournumber pad, he will go through hisInventory in reverse order, andhold his scythe again. Pressing the+ key will put the item in Manny’shand. Press + again to return theInventory item to Manny’s coat. Youcan also access individual Inventoryitems without going into Manny’sInventory by using the number keys1-0 on your keyboard.

Press ESC to exit the Inventory. You can look at Inventory items whilein the Inventory or while holding themin your hand. If you want to use anInventory item with a person or objecton the screen, first put it in Manny’shand, then move Manny until he“notices” the person or object youwant to use with the Inventory item. Then press the Enter key to use theobject. (For experienced adventuregame players, note that there is noway to combine Inventory items inGrim Fandango.)

The following section

puzzles. If you wish to

be surprised, skip on to the

next section. The Department

of Death also wishes to

advise you that cheating at

electronic recreations may

impair your ability to

acquire first-rate

transportation

in the Land of the Dead…

but, what the heck, you

always liked a good walk

anyway, right?

Here is Manny in his office, ready for another boring day in theLand of the Dead… little does heknow that his afterlife is about toundergo a radical change.

Use the Arrow keys to walkhim to that table under the pictures, and then use the + key to pick upthe deck of cards on the left of thetable. (If you played through theInterface section above, Mannymay already have the deck ofcards.) Press the + key on thenumber pad to put the cards inManny’s coat pocket.

Now walk him to the back ofthe office (near the windows). You willsee his message tube with the little redflag on it. Press the Enter key to havehim use the tube, and he will read amessage from his boss, Don Copal, telling him to hurry off to a poisoning.(Manny’s job is to pick up recentlydeparted souls in the Land of theLiving, then offer them the bestpossible travel plans through the Landof the Dead… depending on howgood a life they have been living.)

So, walk Manny out of hisoffice and down the hall to drive offand get a client.

But first, it probably wouldn’thurt to check with Eva, Manny’sboss’s secretary. She knowseverything. Get up close to Eva soManny “notices” her, then press theU key or Enter to ask her aquestion. Keep asking her about thepoisoning by highlighting dialogchoices with the Up Arrow andDown Arrow keys and using theEnter key to select a line. When shementions Manny’s driver, ask herabout the driver, and you will getall the information you need.

Now we need to get Manny tothe garage, so have him take thefirst elevator to the left …no need topress the button, just walk on in.

Okay, Manny’s in the garage, but it looks like the last car justdrove off and Manny’s driver isnowhere in sight. Maybe he shouldgo talk to Glottis, the garagesupervisor…he’s in the shack in therear right-hand corner.

After Manny introduceshimself to Glottis, always pick thefirst line of dialog until Glottis sayshe’s too big… to which Mannyshould reply that the cars are toosmall. This will get Manny a workorder for his boss to sign.

Unfortunately, if you haveManny check with Eva, she will tellhim that his boss isn’t signinganything right now. Manny’s a goodsalesman, though, and he probablycould convince his boss if he could

just get into his office. So let’s see ifthere’s another way to get inthere… like through an outsidewindow.

Send Manny down in theother elevator, that goes to thestreet level.

Then have him walk out thedoor at the end of the lobby.

Now Manny is on the steps ofhis office building. Take him downthe steps and walk him down thesidewalk to the right. Wow, it’s theDay of the Dead festival. Looksinteresting, but Manny doesn’t havetime right now; we need to get theboss to sign that work order.

So take Manny into that alleyon the left. Maybe there’s a fireescape or something he can climbup to his boss’s window.

Well, it doesn’t look too promising, but make him run (press theShift+Arrow keys) all the way tothe end of the alley. There justmight be something there he canuse. Yep, a rope made of old ties.

Let’s have Manny climb the rope(press the Enter key) and seewhere it goes.

Yow! It’s a narrow ledge rightoutside the office window of DonCopal, Manny’s boss, and the bossis gone.

Manny suspects he might be able tosneak in and dig up some dirt onhis boss to get that work ordersigned. Climb Manny through thewindow to check it out. Hey, hiscomputer is just like Manny’s. HaveManny use it (Enter key) to seewhat he can find out about his boss.

Oh, he’s hooked his computerup to the answering machine to givethe appropriate response when hewants to sneak out. We can fix that.Use your Down Arrow to scrolldown to the next to the fifthanswer—the one about having Evasign for Don, then press Enter. Now take Manny out the window, down the tie rope, out the alley, upthe steps, into the building, up theelevator, and give the work order toEva.

She’ll sign it, and Manny is on hisway to the Land of the Living.
