LX Magazine: You grew up in the jewelry business, but that didn’t mean you had to STAY in the jewelry business, why did you? Mark Gross: I decided to attend GIA (Gemological Institute of America) to see if I had a real interest in jewelry and gemstones. I know if you’re truly going to enjoy something and hopefully be good at it, you have to love it. Once I began studying, I immediately knew I was going to get more involved in the family business.LX: What made you realize designing jewelry was something you wanted to do? MG: At GIA I also studied the Bench/Jeweler specialty and the CAD/CAM design. I wanted to know as many aspects of the business as possible. When I finished my first bench jeweler test, I knew I had just touched the tip of an iceberg that would only get bigger and more intricate as I progressed.LX: What was your first successful design?MG: A woman came in one day asking if we remounted gemstones. She had her mother’s aquamarine gemstone from a pendant and wanted to put it with some diamonds from her mother’s wedding band. As we talked, I realized it was going to have to be made from scratch. We mounted the diamonds along one side in a bead setting, gently wrapped textured gold around the aquamarine on the other side — then mounted it all in 18 karat white gold. When she picked up the ring she loved it, and said she was glad to have something so beautiful to always remind her of her mom. LX: Describe the process of collaborating with a client for a custom, one-of-a-kind heirloom-type piece?MG: When I sit down to design with a customer, I don’t have a “typical” way of approaching it. Each design is different. I wouldn’t be doing the design or the client any justice to have a set approach. If a client is interested in an heirloom piece, the design process might start

with a conversation about the family history of the piece, its “story” if you will. This would then lead into the type of piece (ring, pendant, or maybe a brooch) and style (modern, contemporary, or art deco) the customer might have in mind. LX: When you take over the company, what’s the first thing you’re going to change and what is the one thing you will always keep?MG: Well, the first thing that I would change would be the music (he laughs). I have a little different taste than what we play at the store now. The one thing I will always keep is the relaxed atmosphere and comfortable experience our family brings to the jewelry business.LX: What technologies do you see on the horizon that might propel GDC for another 50 years and how would you implement them?MG: The advancements in computer aided design and gemstone scanning currently being perfected are very exciting. Soon, a customer will be able to scan their own gemstone and see it placed in a limitless number of design options immediately. This will speed the design process tremendously.
