    Introduction

ince 855, when 'nton ?andor La(ey founded the first aboveground organi?ation

dedicated to honoring atan and his principles, the Church of atan has woven itsinfluence into the fabric of society, through overt and covert &eans. 0rotto participationisn!t re)uired for active &e&bers, but &any atanists find it invigorating and inspiring tobe in contact with others. @e use the word "grotto" as a general ter& for an associatedsubgroup of the Church of atan, consisting of &e&bers of the Church of atan andadhering to our philosophy. "0rotto"- which actually co&es fro& the Latin word for"crypt" or "vault"-has the appropriate connotation of diabolical, hidden rites taking placein dank, ancient sepulchers consecrated in the >a&es of the $vil #nes. n for&ing yourgroup, you don!t have to use the ter& "grotto" per se if you feel &ore co&fortable with#rder, Corps, Troupe, Troop, ociety, Coalition, Tribe, Pack, Te&ple, 0arrison, League,Lodge, Cabal. Consult your thesaurus for other i&aginative possibilities. 1ore i&portant

than the na&e is your clear understanding of atanis&, your unswerving dedication to theChurch of atan, and your co&&it&ent to pro&ote and apply atanic values in the world.t only takes you to &ake a grotto - you, your fa&ily, a friend - and you &ay choose tokeep it that way. That will depend on where you want to apply your a&bition. This is anorgani?ation for non-joiners, and &any of our finest people choose not to be involved ingroup activities of any kind. They want to concentrate their full energy toward their ownadvance&ent and then contribute to the Church of atan through that power. You!ll neverknow where all our grottos are located or who a&ong the thousands of people youencounter in your life &ay be atanists.

@e try to keep "ad&inistrivia" to a bare &ini&u& but any large organi?ation re)uires atleast a &odicu& of structure and paperwork, so that we present a cohesive andcoordinated front. t!s easier for you to &eet re)uire&ents and standards if they are

clearly &apped out for you. =or so&e people, structure, no &atter how &ini&al andbenign, is an invitation for rebellionA for others, it!s a tool for their own self-discipline andproductivity. Your progress will reflect what your personal predispositions are.

You are obviously e+pected to be inti&ate with all of *r. La(ey!s writings andprinciples in order to clearly represent atanis& so they won!t be covered here. t!spresu&ed that your activities and representation will reflect that fa&iliarity and be inkeeping with the tenets of the Church of atan. The >ine atanic tate&ents, $leven%ules of the $arth, atanic ins and Pentagonal %evisionis& D the cornerstones ofatanic philosophy - are reprinted in the back of this handbook for ready reference. Thereare also several for&s which can be photocopied and sub&itted as necessary Bdon!t write

on the originals/. @e re)uire you to send in &onthly status reports, to keep us infor&edof your activity level, public or &edia representation, and any proble&s you &ay havewith your &e&bers or in your co&&unity. Your &onthly report &ay be very si&ple -noting that you took your fa&ily to the park or gave an infor&ational lecture at the localoccult bookstore or conducted a alloween ritual with friends. 's your grotto grows, your reports will beco&e &ore elaborate - you &ay include &eeting &inutes, flyersyou!ve printed up, te+ts of significant rituals you!ve devised, &edia contact reports.... @ealso re)uire yearly evaluations of your perfor&ance as 0rotto 1aster, by other Church ofatan &e&bers andEor others who have benefited fro& your e+pertise. 'gain, these are"field reports", so we get an idea of how capably you!re perfor&ing your duties. You canscan the other for&s in 'ppendi+ $, which will be necessary as occasions arise.

Your first duty, as a atanist, is to yourself. Then to those you care about-your partner, your children, those in your fa&ily you choose to give your love to. Your third, self-appointed duty, is to the Church of atan and your fellow &e&bers. You have chosen toshoulder these e+tra responsibilities because you feel an intensity of atanic focus in yourlife, beyond what the average lay &e&ber &ay feel. @ithin this organi?ation you!ll findyour leaders, your followers and your friends. @e don!t e+pect you to proselyti?e, but wedo e+pect you to infor& and clear up &isinfor&ation. @e encourage 0rotto 1asters tohave wives, husbands, &ates or a si&ilar stable relationship with so&eone who is also aatanist, or is supportive of your increased involve&ent. ' 0rotto 1aster with a partneris &ore stable, loyal, consistent by nature and is not using the organi?ation to "get girls",or boys, as the case &ay be. o&eone in a &ated situation has &ore to lose, and so is&ore cautious and forward- thinking when necessary. f you don!t have a partner, you!llprobably develop a second in co&&and, a right-hand &an Bor wo&an/ you can depend onto be consistent, loyal, trustworthy and strongly dedicated to atanic principles and theChurch of atan in the sa&e way you are.

Your yearly grotto fees will be assessed on the basis of how &any &e&bers you have inyour grotto, on a sliding scale as described below9

you!ll be assigned infor&ation as you progress and as need arises. @e don!t appreciateour 0rotto 1asters "bucking" for pro&otion. #ur ruling bodies, such as the Council of>ine and the #rder of the Trape?oid, are appointed positions, as is the Priesthood. Thosewho would clai& such appoint&ents the loudest no doubt haven!t been granted suchpositions. f you want to know, "ow do beco&e a Priest", the answer is, "Through

hard work, &aterial achieve&ent and atanic influence in the outside world." @henyou!re appointed as an 'gent or PriestEess, it &eans you!ve caught the attention of theigh Priest through your consistent dedication and strength, and that you!ve earned hisrespect. You can endeavor toward appoint&ent as a Priest through the work you do as a0rotto 1aster. That isn!t the only way so&eone beco&es a Priest, but it!s a good way.You can represent yourself to the public as an approved Church of atan 0rotto 1aster,but not as an 'gent or Priest Bunless you are one/. You have the authority to representatanis&, but not necessarily the Church of atan. Your perfor&ance as a 0rotto 1asterwill be periodically reviewed with an eye toward appointing you as an 'gent or Priest.t is through this position that you can prove yourself worthy of the Priesthood.

Let the structure for your own grotto reflect that of the Church of atan as a whole9 *on!tover-ad&inistrate; You don!t need co&ple+ rules, regulations, degrees and tests foradvance&ent; t betrays you as &ore interested in the trappings and illusion of power andauthority than actually earning respect and getting so&ething acco&plished. You &ight want to assign so&eone the role of=inancial #fficer to collect funds when necessary, to keep an unco&plicated ledger inorder to keep track of what your group has to work with and help plan activitiesaccordingly. You &ight want to assign so&eone who can gather infor&ation, &ake phonecalls and various arrange&ents.

@e reco&&end that 0rotto 1asters initiate two distinct levels of activities-one for thegeneral public Batanic infor&ation lectures, La(ey study groups, etc./ and one forco&&itted Church of atan &e&bers. @e re)uire that Church of atan &e&bers whore)uest deeper involve&ent in a grotto be screened directly by the 0rotto 1aster, sincethey would be participating in rituals and social activities in which e+posure to addressesand other personal details about you and other &e&bers would be unavoidable. %itualswill, of course, have to be held in so&eone!s ho&e or on so&eone!s private land - that!swhy you &ust screen properly. f, for whatever reason, you want a ritual to include

so&eone is e+pelled fro& your grotto and whyA it!s necessary for us to know if so&eoneis a trouble&aker. @eed the& outA &ake it clear you see their &otives even if they don!t.There &ay co&e a ti&e in the very near future when we will all have to know who totrust and who we can!t trust. The opportunity for e+ploitation of a &ore fir&ly-structuredgrotto network is one reason why *r. Lavey has kept grottos underground for a ti&eA he

doesn!t want to see what he!s worked hard to build e+ploited and diluted. $ach 0rotto1aster is a guardian. The grotto syste& can seep back underground once &ore if itproves to be counterproductive.

ince you are in a position to publicly represent atanis&, you will co&e under &orepunishing scrutiny than a lay &e&ber would. @e cannot have our 0rotto 1asters in anyposition that would co&pro&ise the Church of atan legally. f you get slapped on thewrist once in awhile by Central 0rotto, take it in the spirit of professional necessity thatits given. You have taken increased responsibility on your shoulders and are bound tostu&ble fro& ti&e to ti&e in your advance&ent. *on!t be discouraged or think you willbe forever conde&ned for &inor setbacks. Central 0rotto is understanding of well-

$verything is a test. @e don!t play ga&esA these are very real tests with very practicalresults. $ven silence can be a test. You or the &e&bers under you &ay be called upon toprovide certain things to the Church of atan or to perfor& certain tasks as necessary. This will never be anything illegal or beyond your capabilities. @e don!t ask you to passwritten e+a&inations. @e ask you to produce and progress. #ne of the initial )uestions 0rotto 1asters often ask is, " don!t have any &e&bers - howdo get started" =irst of all, keep in &ind that the Church of atan values )uality ofadherents over )uantity. You don!t need a lot of people to &ake up a grotto. You will

&aintain your grotto status if your grotto only consists of you, your fa&ily and a fewclose friends. @e aren!t evangelical by nature. @e don!t need professional atanicevangelists who think they can &ake a living proselyti?ing atanis&. @e need peoplewho understand atanis& and use it to i&prove their lives, and can co&&unicate theirenthusias& to others when asked. That!s all. t shouldn!t be your sole identity, and itshouldn!t take priority over the real world.

That said, there are ways to &ake sure you are reaching others who &ay be interested inlearning &ore about atanis& in your area. Post flyers and tasteful, understatedadvertise&ents in free papers for a La(eyan study group. 'dvertise an ntroductoryatanis& &eeting and locate a space to hold such a &eeting. Contact local public

libraries, a co&&unity center, local colleges or universities, occult stores or bookstoresand ask that, if they have any progra&s of speakers, you would like to volunteer to give atalk on atanis&. 1ost of these outlets will probably be resistant, but if your approach islevel-headed and responsible, you &ight be surprised to find so&e enthusiastic interest.Bf you &eet with hostility, of course, take all appropriate atanic action./

Let word of &outh work for you. Tell your friends that you!ve recently been granted0rotto 1aster status and will be starting so&e activities D that they should tell anyonethey think &ight be interested or worthy of involve&ent. You probably won!t get &anyserious people, if any, the first few ti&es you hold introductory talks. Keep at it.$ventually, news of your legiti&ate &eetings will get to the right ears, you!ll gain areputation as the local Church of atan representative and people will start contactingyou. >ew Church of atan &e&bers will begin sending for your schedule through the&ail. You!ll start to spot those with who& you feel aligned and will approach the& on&ore advanced activities. t!s a process - don!t e+pect it to happen overnight.

This is an organi?ational policy regarding Church of atan alliancesA we wouldn!t

Theseatanists feel they &ust fight with their every sinew to eradicate Christianity - sta&p outthe stupidity, irrationality, hypocrisy and blindness that it encouragesA that our very

survival as a species depends on it.

#ther atanists take a &ore prag&atic view, figuring the herd &ust be controlled and that&ystical fears are the &ost practical way to keep the& in line.
