• To learn the open strings (sight-sing & play)

• To learn pizzicato position• To play and sing notes in time

with the metronome

• Listen to the piece on the website• Try saying at different speeds,

with cello in rest position• Pluck in time with the metronome

and count to 4 before beginning• Say notes in time with the

metronome• Pizzicato over the fingerboard

for a more resonant sound

• In time with the metronome or piano accompaniment

• Cello in correct position• Notes are correct• Pizzicato over the fingerboard

When holding the cello, it should sit between both knees. Your feet should be evenly spaced on the floor and shoulders in a

relaxed position

The thumb of the right hand should rest on the edge of the fingerboard with the pointer finger

ready for pizzicato (string plucking)

Bow Time!

The Bow hold

How to achieve it . . .• Hang the fingers of the right hand over the bow • Hold the little wooden space with the tip of your thumb • Ensure your thumb is opposite your middle finger • Ensure the pointer finger is relaxed and leaning on the middle joint

Relaxed fingers and wrist

Curved pointer finger on the middle joint

Curved thumb opposite the middle finger

Frog of the bow Middle of the bow Tip of the bow

UH (upper half ) Middle to Tip

Parts of the Bow Bold hold exercises

When holding the bow horizontally the little finger counterbalances the weight of the bow. Without the little finger the bow will drop.

Aim to position the bow approximately halfway between the bridge and the edge of the

fingerboard. The bow hair should be slightly tilted towards the bridge.

Bowing Posture

Allow the weight of your right arm to relax upon the bow as you draw the bow across the strings. This weight on the string combined with the horizontal movement that occurs from

each bow stroke allows the string to vibrate thus creating a resonant sound.

Ideal bowing position

Exercise: Rockets- With your right hand, hold the bow with the tip pointing

to the ceiling. Your left hand (palm facing upwards), will be under the screw of the bow.

- Practise counting down from 5 as you tap your little finger on the stick of the bow.

- At the end of your countdown, slowly raise your right arm vertically towards the ceiling. Be sure to watch your fingers on the way up and down and correct your bow hold if required.

Exercise: Lift and Drop- With your right hand, hold the bow horizontally so the tip is

above your outstretched left hand (palm facing upwards)- Practise lifting the bow by applying pressure to the end of

the bow with your little finger.- Once the tip of the bow has lifted above your left hand by

approximately 10 cm, release the little finger and watch the bow drop onto your left hand.

- Repeat 10 times ensuring your fingers remain in the correct shape on the bow.

Points for Parents• To practise string crossing• To consolidate bow retakes and

straight bowing

• Watch the bow when crossing strings and ensure that it is straight and only touching one string

• Keep the right elbow in line with each string

• Keep the little finger on the bow relaxed except when retaking the bow

• Can play in time with the metronome

• Can play with a good clear tone• Can cross strings quietly and with

the correct elbow level

A semibreve lasts for four crotchet beats and can be said as "ver-y long note!"

Arco – Means use the bowMaestoso - Means majestically

Semibreve lasts 4 crotchet beats!

The little finger will be tense while the bow is retaking

through the air, but should relax again once the bow is

resting on the string.

The Left Hand

So far the left hand has served only as decoration, now we will endeavor to reposition the left hand into

first position on the cello.

Straight left wrist

Elbow at 'D' string level

4

1

How to achieve it!

– Keeping good, relaxed posture place your fingers on their tips on the 'D string' starting with your 4th finger (as marked above) then place your 3rd, 2nd and 1st finger touching the strings. Ensure your fingers are placed in the position of E (1st finger), F# (3rd finger) and G (4th finger).

– Now transfer your fingers to the C, G, D, and A strings. Your left elbow must swing across the cello to place these notes correctly.

Space the fingers out evenly, keeping them rounded. The thumb should be slightly bent,

and sit opposite the middle finger, forming a 'C' shape. Fingers should be curved and on their

fingertips.

• To play with different bow speeds - fast WB for the crotchets and slow WB for the minims

• To learn to accent with the bow, on the notes marked with accents

• To learn the note G (4th finger on D string)• To learn correct left hand technique by

having all fingers on the string where possible and correct left hand set up (shown in the picture)

• Set up fingers on the D string and check your left hand with the photo

• Is your thumb opposite your first finger?

• Is your left wrist relaxed and straight?• Play with correct bow divisions

(LH, UH, and WB)• Sing first to help with pitch

(getting the 3rd finger in tune)

• Can play with correct rhythm and in tune

• Can play with correct left hand technique

• Can play with straight bows and correct bowing divisions

• Keeps all fingers down and on their fingertips

Moderato means ata moderate speed

• To learn the note F# (3rd finger on D string) and also E (1st finger on D string)

• Practise correct left hand technique (keep unused fingers closely over the D string)

• To practise correct bowing divisions

• Sing first with metronome• Ensure your left hand is in

the correct shape• Play with the metronome• Play on your fingertips hovering

unused fingers over the string

Points for Parents• To consolidate notes learned thus

far• To consolidate learning of

detache bowing• To learn tenuto and

staccato bowing• To learn some new rhythms

• Use fast strokes in the middle of the bow when playing tenuto notes

• Use short and fast strokes in the middle of the bow with gaps after each note when playing staccato notes

• Can differentiate between the three bowing styles (detache, staccato, tenuto)

• Plays all notes correctly in time and in tune

• Plays with smooth bow changes, particularly in bars 1-8

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Staccato means short and detached. Staccato notes are played with a fast bow followed by a gap before the next note begins.
