Daytime Programme During the week participants can visit 9 programme zones with activities that will be adventurous, creative and unique. The programme is being organised to allow young people to challenge themselves, try new things and make new friends! 1. Adventure zone (half day)

The Adventure zone at Chamboree will be about helping young people to step out of their comfort zones

(whatever their experience) and encouraging them to try new things. An adventure no matter how small can

help us to grow in confidence or even ground us a little. Through adventure, we discover things about

ourselves we didn't know before and this is primarily what the focus of this zone will be at Chamboree

2018. On offer will be a multitude of taster activities which we hope will find their way into your section's

programmes. There will be something for everyone from the wildest adrenaline junkie to the more modest

amongst us. The zone will be split into three categories: crazy wild, wild and mild; participants are

encouraged to try at least one activity from each.

2. Arts & Creative zone (half day)

Based in the Chamboree Arena you have the opportunity to get creative! Within “The Creation Station” you

can learn to accomplish many different types of art and crafts all with a Pirate theme; express yourself at

the Music, Dance and Theatre workshops on the stage and enjoy the surroundings of the ‘Peace &

Reflection’ area. Whilst in the Creative Zone you will visit our International Circus, complete with its own Big

Top and a spectacular 45-minute show and circus skills workshops. REMEMBER: TO BRING A PLAIN

WHITE T-SHIRT WITH YOU TO TYE-DYE!

Ventura Simulator ride - climb aboard for the thrill of your life as you get the opportunity to take flight in an aircraft cockpit or even go into space. Hang on to your seats it’s a ride like no other.

3. Cannonball-run (half-day)

Test your aim and patience with our selection of target sports. This is your chance to learn something new,

improve your skill level and accuracy and generally have some fun. Activities include: Air rifle shooting,

archery, outdoor laser tag, laser clay pigeon shooting, water rockets and catapults.

Theatre in a Field - another brand-new attraction for 2018 with a specially created theatre and a unique 20 minutes’ show performed by a cast of professional dancers and actors in a show created by Sam Erskine a visiting Director at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. The performance team promise a totally immersive experience based around characters challenged by trying to keep safe while online.

Page 8: Group Leaders Briefing Document - WordPress.com · We offer a special warm welcome to all those travelling from outside the County, in particular those travelling from overseas and

8

4. Global zone (half day)

Come and take part in a variety of fun and challenging activities that will raise your awareness of different

cultures and countries. Explore our marketplace to find out about international charities and the work that

they do around the World - the different stalls will definitely challenge your thinking! Then there will be the

opportunity to make some noise with a lively and energetic African drumming activity. Finally sit back and

enjoy a live theatre performance.

5. Liverpool Experience (full day off-site)

Explore the great location of Liverpool in a day. You’ll have the chance to see and visit many of the famous

landmarks and buildings in Liverpool. Following the success of this experience at the last Chamboree we are

planning a return visit to the City of Liverpool with is many attractions and vibrant streets. Taking into account

feedback from last time the day long visit will offer more time for Group Leaders to select locations and

attractions their members want to visit. However, there will be pre-arranged experiences in a number of locations

that are not normally accessible to Scouts. You will follow a scavenger hunt seeing and photographing

yourselves in these stunning locations and create a travelogue of your experience. Full details will be

provided at least 4 weeks before the start of Chamboree. Group Leaders need to be prepared to "lead" their

members on this off-site day and will be responsible for creating their unique programme for the day from the

options being made available.

6. Port of Tortuga (half day)

Only the bravest of buccaneers dares step foot on the rotten docks of the Port of Tortuga. A dank and dirty

port, where the tides seem to have swept together the sum of pirates, privateers, thieves, rogues,

scoundrels and outlaws. A ramshackle haven for all sorts of misdemeanours to take place. Those visiting

the Port of Tortuga have only a matter of time before the Commodores and Admirals of the British Navy

catch up with them. Only the fastest, quick-witted and dastardly pirates can escape. Wannabe pirates will

spend their time on a series of ‘Land’ and ‘Sea’ challenges where they must use their speed, strength (and

sometimes stupidity) to earn eight ‘pieces of eight’ and buy a ticket aboard the only ship fast enough to

escape the clutches of the Navy do-gooders. Can you escape from the Taverns escape room, scale the

riggings of our 120ft assault course, dodge the dunk tank, trawl for treasure and slip and slide into

Chamboree’s Most Wanted wall of fame?

7. Science, Technology & Engineering Zone (half day)

It turns out that there is an amazing amount of science behind being a successful pirate. Learn about the

practical application of Newton’s laws of motion in the cannon test area, build a pirate vessel and undertake

demanding sea trials, hone your sailing skills in the wind tunnel and experience waves without getting your

feet wet. Discover if treasure is really buried under X marked the spot. Take command of your very own

pirate brigands and test your skill on the pirate ‘battleship’ game. CHaOS will be demonstrating and

providing exciting hands on experiments and we will joined by Macc Asctro with a planetarium to learn

about star navigation. The Institute of Physics will be running a Mars Landing experience so you can

become a fully-fledged space pirate and we will be joined by various Scientific Institutes and a host of local

company STEM ambassadors.

8. Sports Zone (half-day)

Discover an island where you can search for treasure by completing swashbuckling activities all in the

name of fun. Challenge your shipmates to a game of drunken sailor football (run around the pitch in a zorb)

or scrub the decks tied to the ratlines (play inflatable football). Can you tangle with the giant octopus twister

or score points in ‘threw the porthole’ (frisbee golf). Instead of noughts and crosses, try your hand at skulls

and crossbones! Lots more physical activities to keep your body prepared for any mutinous onslaught or

attack. Are you up to the challenge?

9. Survival zone (half-day)

Shipwrecked, marooned, cast away. Learn the skills you need to survive on a desert Island. Follow in the

footsteps of Bear Grylls and gain the skills to build shelters, cut wood and light a fire, prepare and cook wild

animals and foraged foods, find out how to track and navigate in the wild. Finally escape the island on your

ship and beat the other pirates to freedom.

Explorer Scouts & Senior Section 14-18 year olds are kept together in Activity Groups and have a unique programme, with every Programme Zone tailoring their zone for the age group. Leader responsibility on activities We expect at least 1 Leader (preferably 2 in case of a requirement to return individual members to your sub-camp) to be with your Group members throughout the day when they are on activity zones. With groups over 12 we would expect at least two Leaders (preferably three in case of a requirement to return individual members to your sub-camp) to accompany your members on the activity zones.

Explorer Scouts and Senior Section When Explorer Scouts and Senior Section are visiting activity zones we would prefer that an adult Leader support them. Specifically, in relation to the Liverpool Experience, there will need to be at least one Leader per unit.

- Have appropriate fire extinguishing media available (fire points are provided in each sub-camp but you should also have precautions on your camp, particularly in the cooking area

- No petrol generators are permitted in camping areas - No naked lights should be permitted in tents - Smoking is only permitted in designated areas - Cookers should be at least one metre away from tent walls - You should not have to pass a cooker to escape from a tent - A dedicated BBQ area is situated on each sub-camp.

Participants under the age of 18, may not smoke on Chamboree (this is UK Law)

- Smoking is only permitted in designated areas which are “Exclusion zones” for under 18s.

Frequently Asked Questions How should first aid be dealt with? Minor accidents should be dealt with by your group first aider, however, if you require further assistance please contact your sub-camp HQ. Report all accidents to your own sub-camp Leader. Please do not use personal mobile phones to call for an ambulance this will be done on our Medical Hot Line. It would cause a great deal of embarrassment if more than one ambulance turned up for an incident.

What are the first aid provisions on site? - Each sub-camp and activity area has a ‘first response’ first aid facility; this is supported by a central first

aid point with qualified first aiders available 24 hrs per day. This is being provided by The County First Aid Team. The first aiders will go to the sub-camp/ activity area if required. If necessary patients will be sent to minor injury units or an emergency hospital as required

- If a young person has to go to a minor injury unit or hospital it is expected that they will be accompanied by a group leader/ helper

- For groups with transport facilities it will be helpful if the patient is taken by the group transport if minor injury unit treatment is required. If a group is unable to provide transport, then it will be provided.

What if there is a serious accident or incident on site? - Chamboree has two emergency plans, one for injuries and incidents involving a small number of people

and one for major incidents where large numbers of people could be involved and where public emergency facilities and the local authority may be involved.

- Both Chamboree emergency plans involve a Chamboree duty manager acting as Incident Controller and reacting with a range of resources to any emergency

- These emergency plans are initiated automatically by our Control Centre if any incident or potentially serious injury is notified.

- Please follow instructions if it becomes necessary to implement the major incident plans

Who is responsible for reporting incidents or near misses? If an incident occurs on site where Chamboree has responsibility (activities, main arena, sub-camp HQ’s etc. then you simply report the incident to the nearest Chamboree staff member who will take responsibility for managing the incident and all subsequent reporting requirements including to Scout Insurance service (UK Scouts only). If an incident occurs on your Group campsite, then it is the Group Leadership Teams responsibility to manage the incident and the subsequent reporting if required. However, you should still notify the sub-camp leader of the incident and actions you have taken. Chamboree staff will assist where required.

How do I get help in an emergency? - The first point of call should always be your sub-camp HQ, programme zone, or any site facility such as

the food court/ information centre etc. These are all equipped with telephones with the emergency number prominently displayed. This will link to our Communication Centre (occupied 24 hours/ day) and they will initiate the emergency plan and contact the public emergency services if required.

- You should not normally call the public emergency services directly by your mobile as our emergency plan will probably offer faster aid to you, you may not be able to give an exact location and there will be delays if they arrive on site and our site team are not available to escort them to the patient/ problem area

- However, in exceptional circumstances (e.g. a life and death situation) if you use the 999 (or 111) service directly you should back this up by immediately using our site telephones/ radios to contact our Control Centre so that they can arrange for further assistance and for the public emergency services to be met at the main gate

- The Information Point and Communications Centre at Chamboree can contact NHS Direct, the out of hours GP service and the emergency dental service for advice and assistance. They also have locations/ maps/ telephone numbers for Local GP’s/ pharmacies/ dentists/ minor injury units/ NHS walk in centres/ Opticians/ Dentists etc.

- The ambulance service will determine which emergency hospital a patient is taken to, but again the Communications Centre has telephone numbers and maps.

What if I have a Safeguarding Concern? - You must follow the guidance on the Scouts Yellow Card (or Guides ‘Volunteer Code of Conduct’) - You must report your concern IMMMEDIATELY to a senior member of the Chamboree management

team, which can be done through the info centre in the main arena - Once a concern has been raised, a decision will be made by the Chamboree Camp Chief on the

appropriate immediate action to be taken. If necessary, a temporary incident manager will be appointed to take charge of the incident as part of an action plan to deal with the situation. This process applies to Guides and Scouts

- If in doubt ask to speak to the Chamboree Camp Chief, Graham Phillips - Do not start your own investigation, do not directly contact outside agencies - Remember that if a safeguarding incident occurs, the safety of young people is our priority

What do I need to do before I get to Chamboree? - Ensure that you have appointed your home contact (In Touch Contact in UK) and that you have given

them a copy of FS 120075 (available by email) - The emergency contact number for Chamboree is 07092 880 608 - Ensure you carry out risk assessments for activities that you are responsible for, The Scout association

website www.scouts.org.uk can provide much additional data via its search facility - Give a safety briefing to all; your Leaders and helpers.

What YOU need to include in a safety briefing? - Safety and fire precautions to be used on your camp - What to do in the event of an accident - The conclusions of any risk assessment that you have carried out - Key points from the contents of this guidance, particularly about avoidance of ill-health - The need to wear seat belt, where fitted, on coaches and buses to the off- site activities - The need to listen to, and follow, the safety briefing at many of the activities - The need to keep away from ‘out of bounds’ area such as ponds, hazardous areas downrange of

shooting and archery activities, areas around generators etc. - Horseplay/ damage in toilet and shower areas will not be tolerated - If participants feel unwell they must report it to a leader without delay.

Avoiding ill health in camp Cheshire Scouts will be following the guide lines suggested by UK Scout Headquarters FS 120626 to help stop the spread of E-coli 0157 and viral gastro-enteritis infection. To be a risk the E-coli 0157 has to be swallowed from contact with hands, contaminated food or water. Even tiny amounts of E-coli 0157 can be a severe risk. However, these risks can be greatly reduced by taking simple precautions. To this aim the livestock will be removed from the camping area a minimum of three weeks before Chamboree and we ask you to please help by observing the following precautions

- Remove all visible droppings from your camping area - Always wash hands before preparing food, cooking, eating, drinking, smoking i.e. use soap, clean

towels and hot water

How will we get to off-site activities? Transport for off-site activities is included and will leave on time so please make sure all your campers are at the pick-up point in good time. Times and pick up points will be designated at the evening Activities Briefing meeting.

Will sub-camps provide refrigeration? The sub-camp HQ’s will have a freezer which subject to available space can be used to freeze ice blocks for use with cool bags, it cannot be used to store food. We recommend you consider using a Calor Gas Fridge which we understand are available for around £100, you are also encouraged to use the facility to purchase fresh food from the central catering team who have facilities to store food at the correct temperature (sorry but this facility cannot be used to store your own purchase food).

Can generators be used? In the interest of fire safety, these should be run on Diesel or Gas. In the interests of other campers who will be in close proximity they can only be run between the hours of 8.00am & 8.00pm. Any appliances running on them must be plugged through an RCD.

Will open fires be allowed? Sorry but open fires are not allowed on sub-camp sites. A number of people have asked about using BBQ’s which are allowed on the condition that they are not left unattended when lit and great care is taken not to damage the grass.

Are there any restrictions on group kitchens? All Group leaders are reminded that they must provide buckets (to be filled with water) for kitchen areas and we strongly advise against the use of tilley lamps and that neither tilley lamps nor gas lights (no naked flames) are to be used in sleeping tents.
