Language Schools Mission Statement

'n a global society, the summer residential (rograms (ro#ided by the Middlebury Language Schools are an im(ortant (art o& the

nation4s strategic language reser#e. e educate undergraduate and graduate students &rom many disci(lines and institutions all

o#er the =nited States 8and the orld< ho seek to im(ro#e their orld languages and intercultural skills. e (ro#ide these students

ith consistent and de(endable access to languages in an interacti#e, intensi#e>immersion en#ironment. e also ser#e go#ernment

em(loyees and indi#iduals &rom (ro&essional backgrounds. !he Language Schools integrate ecellent and inno#ati#e instruction inlanguage ith a curriculum that incor(orates linguistics, literature, culture, and area studies, o&&ering students o((ortunities to use

the target language ith nati#e and near>nati#e language (ro&essionals and ith each other. !he curriculum is su((orted by an

etensi#e co>curricular (rogram designed to rein&orce classroom learning through a task>based a((roach. e are dedicated to the

(remise that ithout real com(etency in language there can be no true cultural understanding, and, that, to be truly e&&ecti#e,

language s(eaking must (ro#ide meaning&ul access to other cultures.

Students, faculty, and staff are responsible for knowing and observing all regulations that may affect their status at the Middlebury

Language Schools. For this reason, they are expected to acquaint themselves with the contents of this handbook, individual school

bulletins, and all official school memos and notices. he main means of communication between the students and the school faculty

and administration will be the Middlebury Language School official e!mail network. 

"ecause this handbook covers a range of topics and because it may occasionally be necessary to change the text, the statements

contained herein are not meant to be and should not be considered contractual in nature. his handbook is a summary of Middlebury

session, is re@uired o& all summer language students. !he Language "ledge (lays a maFor role in the success o& the (rogram, both as

a symbol o& commitment and as an essential (art o& the language learning (rocess. iolation o& the Language "ledge de(ri#es both

you and your &ello students o& an im(ortant o((ortunity. !he Language "ledge re@uires that you not s(eak, read, or hear nglish or

other &oreign languages at any time, e#en o&& cam(us. !his means that you should ha#e no contact ith students or &aculty o&

another School, e#en i& you s(eak the language o& that School. ?ou ill be gi#en a #erbal arning &or the &irst #iolation and a ritten

arning &or the second #iolation. Subse@uent #iolations ill be considered grounds &or e(ulsion. !his "ledge has been a maFor key

nglish during this (eriod. )lso, all Language School -irectors, the -ean, the -ean4s sta&&, and most &aculty members are a#ailable

&or consultations in nglish.

hen i! the Language Pledge 'ai(ed" Students are not e(ected to s(eak in their language o& study hen they are &aced ith an

emergency, hen con#ersing ith a member o& the Middlebury College administration, ith a School Coordinator, hen s(eaking

ith a healthcare (ro&essional, and on those occasions hen it is absolutely necessary to use nglish or another language. ules and
