They are dividedinto three accessions. The first accession has a Guide that was completed by Doris Mitterling inJanuary 1979, and edited by Sharon Kivenko in September 1999. It is divided into seven sections.Section I. International Peace Research Association (IPRA) includes membership information, newsletters, correspondences regarding affiliations with other organizations, conference andsymposia working papers, campaign details, and research material about specific regions in the worldwhere IPRA was/is at work. Section II. Consortium on Peace Research and Education(COPRED) contains membership lists, historical documentation, newsletters, correspondences, conference and symposia working papers, and funding documentation. Section III. Women'sInternational League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) includes papers that document WILPF'swork with non governmental organizations and other international organizations in a variety oflocations around the world. It also includes papers about women's global peace work, as well as effortsmade by specific women, minutes kept from executive meetings, information regarding the WILPFInternational Headquarters as well as WILPF sections around the world. Sections IV & VPublications include publications used by Elise Boulding as references for her work as well as thosewritten by Dr. Boulding herself. Section VI. Noes and Chapters from Elise Boulding's Booksinclude manuscripts and edit notes from some of her books.

The Second & Third Accessions are basic preliminary inventories of documents donated by Dr.Boulding between 1979 and 1996. They include additional documentation of Boulding's work withIPRA, COPRED< WILPF as well as with UNESCO, the American and International SociologicalAssociations, and a host of international and American peace and education organizations.Furthermore, these two sections contain documents regarding Elise Boulding's family life, and closeaffiliation with the Quaker community (both the American Friends Service Committee and theYearly Intermountain Meeting), as well as correspondence with admirers, colleagues, and studentsfrom around the world. Detailed course and lecture material from the courses that Dr. Boulding taughtat both Dartmouth and at CU Boulder can be found amongst these sections as well. They alsocomprise an extensive collection of papers published and unpublished and presented by Elise Bouldingthroughout her career.

Due to the fact that the latter part of the collection was done as a very basic inventory, and that itspans close to thirty years of Dr. Boulding's extensive and intensive work, documents pertaining t ospecific organizations or efforts can be spread out amongst a number of boxes. However, the listsprovided should be detailed enough to provide decent guidance until the entire collection isreorganized into a complete guide.

ELISE BOULDING PAPERS. 5 BOXES

ABSTRACT

Dr. Elise M. Boulding (1920-), these papers concern her personal life and academic career. EliseBoulding was born in 1920 in Oslo, Norway and moved to the United States of America with herfamily at age three. In 1941, the 21-year-old Elise Biorn-Hansen married the renowned and highlyrespected economist, Kenneth Boulding. Despite Elise Boulding’s responsibilities as wife and mothershe still managed to make time for extensive academic study and peace work. Elise Boulding is notedfor her active role in many peace and research oriented groups. Her involvement with the Women’sInternational League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), the International Peace Research Association(IRPA), the Consortium on Peace Research Education and Development (COPRED), and a host ofother organizations has greatly impacted and has never gone unnoticed. Furthermore, her service onthe board of the United Nations University and the International Jury of the UNESCO Prize forPeace Education has helped to further international efforts toward including peace education incurricula around the globe. In 1990, Boulding was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her workon non-violence and conflict resolution; and in 1996, Boulder’s Rocky Mountain Peace Centerawarded Dr. Boulding its first Peacemaker of the Year award. Elise Boulding was a former Universityof Colorado at Boulder professor as well as a professor emerita of Sociology at Dartmouth College. InNovember 1996, she left Boulder and retired to Wayland, MA to add to her already extensive bodyof published books and essays, and to live closer to many of her children and grandchildren. Upon herdeparture, she vowed to continue her active work in peace advocacy, research, and education. Thisaccession includes project materials, notes on conference and seminar talks, book materials, personalpapers, and publication information.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Elise M. Boulding Collection includes personal and professional papers that concern Dr.Boulding’s work with professional associations, international peace organizations, activist campaigns, educational reform and peace studies curricula, religious institutions, and her family. They are dividedinto four accessions. The First Accession has a Guide that was completed by Doris Mitterling inJanuary 1979, and edited by Sharon Kivenko in September 1999. The Second and ThirdAccessions have basic preliminary inventories of documents donated by Dr. Boulding between 1979and 1996.

The Fourth Accession has a survey of documents donated by Dr. Boulding in August 2000. Theyinclude Imaging Workshop and Project Materials, papers from Elise Boulding’s involvement with theQuaker community, UNESCO documents, conference and seminar talks and notes, book materials, publication information, COPRED papers, and personal papers as well. All materials are recorded asthey were sent to the Archives: in original folders, files, and order. Underlined items are titles ofhanging folders as they appear in writing on the folders themselves. All items under the title Untitledwere left in their original order, outside any specific hanging file or category. Items loose in titledhanging files are either listed as “loose papers” or the hanging file itself is numbered as a regular file.In such cases, the words “hanging file” are marked in brackets. Finally, all title discrepancies forpublished materials or for speech or essay titles can be attributed to the very basic nature of theinventory, as well as to Dr. Boulding’s editing process. For example, name differences can be foundamongst the files of Dr. Boulding’s most recent publication. In some cases, the work appears as “TheCulture of Peace,” and in others, it appears as “Cultures of Peace.”
