MYP CurriculumDeveloped by an internationalteam of educators, the curriculumcombines challenging standardswith creativity and flexibility. Itoffers an approach that embracesand surpasses traditional schoolsubjects. Students develop theknowledge, understanding, attitudesand skills necessary to actively andresponsibly participate in a changingworld. As independent learners, students recognize relationships between school subjectsand the world outside, adapt to new situationsand combine relevant knowledge, practical andsocial intelligence to solve authentic problemsalone or in groups.

The MYP works in collaboration with district, state and national standards to challenge andmotivate students. Schools use the NorthCarolina Standard Course of Study and theMYP curricular approach to organize andteach units of inquiry. Students study subjectsfrom each of the eight subject groups: mathe-matics, language A (English language arts), language B (Spanish), humanities, science, technology, arts and health and physical education through the five Areas of Interaction.

Preparation for the IB Diploma ProgrammeSince 1996, GCS has proudly offered the IBDiploma Programme for motivated high schoolstudents. The standards of academic excellenceassociated with IB make it a compelling optionfor many students. Students who complete theMYP are prepared to excel in the IB DiplomaProgramme in grades 11 and 12.

InteractionThese five areas are used to make connectionsbetween subjects so that students learn to seeknowledge as an interrelated, coherent whole:

Approaches to LearningStudents learn to take responsibility for theirown learning.

Community and ServiceStudents take an active part in the communitiesin which they live.

Human Ingenuity (formerly Homo Faber-man the maker)Students explore the processes and products ofhuman creativity.
