Biography GUNNAR BERGENHOLTZ, LDS, ODONT DR (PhD), ODONT DR HC Professor Emeritus The Sahlgrenska Academy Go ¨teborg University Sweden Gunnar Bergenholtz is Professor Emeritus of the Sahlgrenska Academy at Go ¨teborg University. He was a graduate of the Royal School of Dentistry, University of Umea ˚, in 1964. After 6 years in general dental practice, he became a certified specialist in endodontics by the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden in 1973. For 5 years (1984–1989) he was Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Endodontics at the University of North Carolina, School of Dentistry, where he was also the first holder of the Jacob B. Freedland chair. From 1989 to 2004 he chaired the Department of Endodontology and Oral Diagnosis at Go ¨teborg University. In the period 1993–1997 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Odontology. He has been a member and co-chair of the Board for Medical Research, Swedish Research Council (1998– 2003). He holds Honorary Doctorships with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Malmo ¨ Uni- versity. Over many years he has also been actively involved with the European Society of Endodontology both as a President and Executive Director. From 2001 to 2003 he served on the Board of Directors for the IADR and as Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for its 81st General Session in Go ¨teborg in 2003. Gunnar’s primary research focus has been on defence mechanisms of the dentin–pulp complex to bacterial elements. He is principle author and co-author of scientific publications, clinical reviews and textbook chapters relating to endodontics, oral medicine and pulp biology. Gunnar Bergenholtz is Professor Emeritus of the

Sahlgrenska Academy at Goteborg University. He was

a graduate of the Royal School of Dentistry, University

of Umea, in 1964. After 6 years in general dental

practice, he became a certified specialist in endodontics

by the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden

in 1973. For 5 years (1984–1989) he was Professor and

Chairperson of the Department of Endodontics at the

University of North Carolina, School of Dentistry,

where he was also the first holder of the Jacob B.

Freedland chair. From 1989 to 2004 he chaired the

Department of Endodontology and Oral Diagnosis at

Goteborg University. In the period 1993–1997 he

served as Dean of the Faculty of Odontology.

He has been a member and co-chair of the Board for
