When my mother was in seminary in Tzfas, Israel, she bought a ticket to go

to the Rebbe for Tishrei. This would be her first time going to 770.

When my mother finally got to Crown Heights, she enjoyed going to all the farbrengens, and just spending time in 770. When she went to get a dollar from the Rebbe, she was very nervous, as she had never done so before. When it was her turn, she was so shaken that she forgot everything she wanted to ask for. The Rebbe gave her a dollar and she continued down the line. As soon as she left, people began

pushing her back toward the Rebbe, saying, “Come back,

the Rebbe

wants you to come back!” When she came before the Rebbe once again, the Rebbe gave her an additional dollar and told her that it was for her family and wished her much hatzlocha. She was very

shocked as she walked out—that was exactly what she had wanted to ask the Rebbe for.

The Rebbe has so much Ahavas Yisroel; he cares for every single Yid. No matter who they are or where they come from, he knows what they really need in their hearts. We can all try and emulate the Rebbe’s great love by taking extra care to think about the needs of our friends and family.

As Chassidim would travel home from spending the month

of Tishrei with their Rebbe in Lubavitch, people would

stop and ask them, “What do you have for sale?” Meaning: What did you gain from the time spent with your Rebbe? The Chassidim would answer,

“What we have to sell are the Maamarim we heard over

Tishrei.”

I know! An army commander! Or, or, a real life general! Or a chief general of a whole army!Rivky: I think that’s a good idea. Let’s do it!Yitzi: Setting up the dials and entering in for an army chief general. Ok! Here he comes!Zoooooooooooomp!General: Why are you slouching? STAND UP STRAIGHT! Shoulders up! In your places! SA-LUTE! You—tuck in your shirt and start looking like a real soldier!Chani: Rivky, he’s so scary. I wouldn’t want to make any mistakes around him.General: What did you say? I expect a ‘Yes, sir!’ Nothing more, nothing less!Chani: Yes, sir!Sruly: Sir General, can you please tell us how to prepare for Rosh Hashana?General: It says in this week’s parsha: —אתם נצבים היום כלכם לפני ה׳ אלקיכם“Today you are all standing here together before Hashem.” Any more questions?Rivky: Um, yes, sir. How does that teach us how to prepare for Rosh Hashana, sir?General: It means that all the Yidden were standing together in front of Hashem. The Alter Rebbe says that, “כלכם—all of you” also means united with Ahavas Yisroel. “ואהבת לרעך כמוך!’’ Do you know what united everyone together?Rivky: Maybe, sir! Was it because they were all Yidden?General: It’s because they were all standing in Hashem’s army! They were united because they are all working for one King! Do you know what it means to stand in front of Hashem? The king of kings? The grand Commander-in-Chief of Tzivos Hashem?!

Chani: It must be pretty scary, sir! Standing in front of you is already scary enough. It makes me want to behave my best, and, with all due respect, sir, you’re only a human chief general. Hashem is way greater than you, sir!Yitzi: Sir, I’d also feel honored and proud, and of course very happy to be in front of the Command-er-in-Chief!General: Now, do you know why we were all standing there, united on that day?Sruly: Yes, sir! The rest of the posuk says that we were about to make a bris with Hashem! A promise that we would always keep the Torah and Mitzvos!General: And do you know what we are about to do on Rosh Hashana?Rivky: Yes, sir! We’re going to renew that prom-ise! We’re going to crown Hashem as our king, and promise to keep Torah and Mitzvos even better than last year!Chani: And we’re going to stand in front of Hashem with awe, and be at our best behavior, sir!Yitzi: Sir, we’ll also be proud to be Hashem’s sol-diers, and we will do so with simcha, because we are so lucky to be in Hashem’s army!Sruly: With Ahavas Yisroel, sir! to Hashem for the best year—a Moshiachdike year, celebrating the Yomim Tovim of Tishrei in Yerushalayim!

Traveling to TishreiWatching the DVD “Tishrei With the Rebbe” can help you understand the wonderful feeling of love and achdus that Chassidim felt when they came to the Rebbe. For years, Chassidim have been congregating

with their Rebbe for Tishrei, coming in from far away places to spend the Yomim Noraim in a makom kadosh. And holy it was, with all of the Chassidim together

in one place, singing, dancing, learning, and davening.

Just as much as the Chassidim want to be near the Rebbe, the Rebbe wants to be near his Chassidim. The Rebbe would welcome guests in the sukkah, and see them off after Tishrei.

During Tishrei, 770 is always full of the Rebbe’s special guests from around the world and all of Crown Heights joins

together to provide them with places to sleep and eat.

Hello there brand-new diary, my name is Dubbie. My Mommy bought you so I can :ב אלול

practice my writing. If I write at least once a week, then on Shabbos I get a special treat.

I’m going to ask for a massive piece of cranberry kugel, 'cuz that’s my favorite food.

Another thing you should know about me is that I’m eight years old. So don’t blame me if

I do anything silly, 'cuz I’m actually pretty good for my age.

Also, I have two older brothers and two older sisters, and one little brother

and two little sisters. I like them all pretty much, except sometimes Menucha is a

troublemaker and scribbles on my pictures. That’s why I started hanging them on the freezer instead of the

fridge. My brother Sholom is twelve, and he’s a four star general in Tzivos Hashem. He’s totally going to get f ive stars

by the end of this year. As for me, I’m only a private. So I have, like, more than ten levels until I’m as good as him. I

must f ind out where he got all those stars from. See ya later, diary! I’ll let you know what Sholom’s secret is soon.

-Guess what, diary. I’ve got the secret. Mushky said Sholom didn’t become a general by playing make :י אלול

believe-princess. So I asked her, “How did he do it?”

And she said, “Because he’s a real soldier in the army of Hashem.” A real soldier only does what the Commander-

in-Chief, Hashem, wants.Well, I knew it would be tough to give up playing make-believe-princess, but I started being

like a real soldier. When Mommy called me for dinner, I said, “Yes sir!” and saluted. Then

I marched down the stairs and stood at attention.

Ma said, “For girls, we say, ‘ma’am’.”

When Sholom asked if I could help him wash the dishes, I said “Yes sir!” and of course

I got it right because Sholom is a man, I know. But Sholom said, “What are you angry

about?”“I’m not angry, sir! I’m just a real soldier, sir! How may I help you, sir?” I said and I

stood at attention with an even more serious face.

“Ohhhh,” said Sholom. “But Hashem’s soldiers don’t have to be so serious and angry looking! In Tzivos Hashem

we’re happy, because we get to serve the best Commander-in-Chief.”

SO! I instantly turned my serious soldier face, into a super excited happy-to-serve-the-bestest-awesomest-

superest-Commander-in-Chief-in-the-wholest-widest-worldest soldier face! Now I’m so excited to go to school

tomorrow and learn Torah, just like Hashem wants! Just like Sholom! Five stars, here I come!

Dubbie’s Diary

We f inally started learning about Rosh Hashana in school. I had been waiting :ט‘‘ו אלול

for a while, because I had a whole lot of questions for Mrs. Koshansky. As soon as she said,

“Today we are going to learn about Rosh Hashana,” I shot up my hand and waved it really high

for her to see.

I asked, “I don’t get it Mrs. Koshansky! Why do we need to blow a shofar on Rosh

Hashana? What is a shofar? Why can’t we just blow the shofar at home, like in bed? There’s no school anyway!”

Mrs K. said we make Hashem the King on Rosh Hashana. Then we blow the shofar in shul loud and clear, so the

whole world knows about this King! Yippee-doodles! I’m sure going to practice blowing the shofar.

But when she answered my questions, I got even more confused. Why would Hashem want to be the King of

the Yidden? Tatty said Hashem is the King of all the forests, and deserts, and oceans in the world, and also all the

stars, and Neptune and Mars, and even the planets we don’t know about. If I was King of Everything, I wouldn’t

care about a few shtoonky people. I tried raising my hand again. This time, Mrs. Koshansky saw me right away and

said, “Okay Dubbie, class is almost over, so ask me your questions tomorrow.”

I will have to ask all my questions to Tatty instead.

Yesterday I said Shema really really good before I went to bed, so Tatty picked me up on his :ט‘‘ז אלול

shoulders and gave me a ride around the house. I said, “Tatty, it’s like you’re the king and I’m your crown!” And

then it was the perfect chance to ask all my questions.

Tatty said it’s true that Hashem is the King of everything. But since He loves us so much,

He chooses us to be His special people. Hashem actually wants to be our King! Every year on

Rosh Hashana we get to put the crown on Hashem’s head. And not just on Rosh

Hashana, but every single shmingle day, we put a crown on Hashem.

I’m sure my Tatty has a google in his head or something, because he knows the

answers to everything.

So I asked, how do we do that? Do we get to blow the shofar everyday? Ta said, a soldier in

Hashem’s army does only what the Commander-in-Chief, the King of everything, says. So if the Yetzer Hara

pipes in, the soldier doesn’t listen—instead, the soldier does what Hashem wants. That shows everyone who’s the

real Boss. Then every day, when the soldier (like me!!) walks down the street, everyone looks and says, “That must

be a soldier of Hashem!” It’s like Rosh Hashana always, all day long announcing to the world that Hashem is the

King.No-way-ho-zay yetzer hara. I’m never going to listen to you again. In fact, I’m going to have you locked up in

jail! Now I just have to f ind out where the Yetzer Hara hides so I can tie him up! Muhahahahaha!

three years had passed since Schneur Zalman and Rochel’s move to Vitebsk. Then came

the special day when…Mazel tov! Rochel, already the mother of a baby girl, gave birth to a son. Baby Boruch was named after his mother’s father, R’ Boruch Batlan. Little Boruch was

the apple of his parents’ eyes. He was a healthy little boy with handsome features and a sharp mind.

When Boruch turned four, his father wrapped him in a tallis and carried him to Cheder for his first day of school. Boruch had barely been there for a

year before he knew most of Tanach inside and out. He skipped

a grade and

began learning Gemora with the older class. Soon, he was ready to move on to the next level of learning again. At the “ripe old age” of seven, he was thrilled to be allowed to join his Tatty’s Gemora class. He attended the class for three years, rapidly surpassing all his older classmates in knowledge.

After Cheder was over for the day, R’ Schneur Zalman would often take his brilliant son for long walks on the banks of the Dvina River. As they walked,

he taught Boruch about the wonders of Hashem’s creations and discussed Torah with him. Boruch loved spending this special time with his father in the beautiful and breathtaking outdoors.

By the time Boruch became Bar Mitzvah, he knew

several sedarim of Mishnayos and

mesechtos of

R’ Schneur Zalman would often take his brilliant son for long walks on

the banks of the Dvina River. As they walked, he taught Boruch about the

wonders of Hashem’s creations.

Gemora by heart perfectly. R’ Schneur Zalman was now one hundred percent confident in Boruch’s ability to study Torah on his own. Boruch was allowed to take his Gemora, and any other seforim that his father recommended, along with him to the riverbank. Stretched out on the soft grass, birds chirping and the river rushing in the background, Boruch would delve deeply into whatever sefer he was studying. This is how Boruch came to love nature. He decided he would rather spend his time alone on a grassy hillside than with other people.

The more Boruch learned, the more his respect for Torah scholars grew. However, Boruch also knew that when it came to middos tovos, he could often learn more from ordinary, uneducated Yidden than he could from the greatest Torah scholars.

One seemingly simple person who left a permanent impression on Boruch was Avremel the Fisherman. A simple Yid, he was called “Avremel the Lip” because of his thick, red bottom lip. He struggled to pronounce the words of davening, let alone to understand their meanings. Nevertheless, Avremel was a sincere and frum Yid. He could usually be found in shul, davening and saying Tehillim with great fervor, or listening attentively to an Ein Yaakov class and trying to pick up what he could.

Boruch noticed that “Avremel the Lip” would stand outside the window of Boruch’s home on Shabbos afternoons. Avremel was listening to the Chumash class that Boruch’s mother Rochel taught for the women in the neighborhood, using the popular Tze’eno Ure’eno Chumash with Yiddish translation. Avremel was not at all ashamed to be the only man listening in to the lecture. In fact, he managed to learn quite a good deal from these classes. For him, it was Gan Eden!

Still, as a child too young to respect Avermel’s thirst for knowledge, Boruch felt sorry for him.

Boruch knew that Avremel would go out to the Dvina River to catch fish to sell

in the

market. Avremel “sold” any leftovers to his poor neighbors for practically nothing. He didn’t want them to feel like they were taking tzedakah, so he always charged a few small coins.

Once, when Avremel went home and counted up the day’s profits, he realized that a customer had been overcharged by a few groshen (pennies). But he couldn’t remember who it had been. He

dropped everything and ran to search the neighborhood. He visited all his customers’ homes and asked them if they remembered how much they had paid for their fish. Try as he might, Avremel could not determine whom he had “cheated.” Then, someone remembered that an unknown peasant had bought fish from Avremel that day. Could he have been the mystery

customer?

Probably, decided Avremel. But no one knew who or where that peasant was. How could he possibly correct his mistake and pay him back those groshen?

Avremel could not rest, he was so worried. At last, he decided to

seek the advice of Boruch’s father, R’ Schneur Zalman, who was “der

Posner melamed” and the talmid chochom of the neighborhood.

“Please, tell me what to do!” cried Avremel in distress, tears

sliding down his cheeks. “I feel as though I have robbed someone!”

“Give the amount you overcharged that stranger to tzedakah,” advised R’ Schneur Zalman with compassion.

“Oh, no,” Avremel replied immediately. “I could never do that. That would mean I’d be sharing the mitzvah of tzedakah with that peasant!”

Boruch, who heard the story from his father when he came home that day, didn’t remember the end of it. But he could recall very well that his father began referring to Avremel the fisherman as “Reb Avrohom” and treating him with the utmost respect.
