Hope Island and North Shore residents
will be the big winners with the opening
of the Mater Health Centre, Hope
Island planned for late 2011. The centre,
slated as the latest and most prominent
medical centre on the Gold Coast, is
planned to be a multi-disciplinary health
centre with General Practitioners,
Specialists and allied health providers.
The Mater Health Centre was recently
launched to Mater staff and Specialists
at a presentation held at Mantra South
Bank. Mater Private Hospital Executive
Director, Don Murray spoke about the
evolving partnership between Mater
Health Services and Halcyon Days.
“Mater have identified Hope Island and
the North Shore of the Gold Coast as
a region where Mater allied specialist
services, pharmacy, pathology and
radiology would benefit the community.
Mater has successfully extended its
health services to the wider community
in Redland City over the past ten years,
and is now looking to expand to the
northern precinct of the Gold Coast,
which is a rapidly growing region of
South East Queensland,” said Mr Murray.
Medical Director of Halcyon Days,
Dr. Geissmann said, “During my many
years of medical practice in Brisbane,
I experienced first hand the quality of
care and people that is the Mater. We
are obviously delighted and proud to be
associated with Mater Health Services,
and together we plan to deliver not only
a great multi-disciplinary health centre,
but a great outcome for the people of
the northern end of the Gold Coast.”

In the words of new home owners Kerry
and Shannon Bell, “Life is pretty good at the
moment.” Their recent move to Halcyon
Waters on the Gold Coast’s North Shore
has meant a new lease on life for the
vibrant couple. The Bells’ plan was to retire
early, downsize their large Queenslander
at Pacific Pines and find a new home base.
They wanted somewhere they could
call home yet still enjoy all the creature
comforts and little luxuries that they had
been accustomed to before.
Most importantly their new home must be
secure and most definitely have caravan
storage for their recently acquired escape
vehicle… they found it all at Halcyon
Waters and they are now living their
dream. With the major headaches in life
like home maintenance and security out of
the way, now Kerry and Shannon can do
as they have planned, spending their time
travelling, living life to the full, discovering
new places and meeting new people.
Before making the decision to make the
move to Halcyon Waters, Entomologist
and Scientist Kerry, put Halcyon Waters
under the microscope comparing it to
other over 50’s lifestyle communities on
the market. “We watched Halcyon Waters
being built as we passed by heading to
our favourite tapas restaurant at Sanctuary
Cove over a period of a few years,”
said Kerry.
Something like four inspections later and
they were absolutely convinced that they
had found what they were looking for.
“We thought that the standard of housing,
all the extra space, the Leisure Club and
facilities, and the community atmosphere
were all outstanding,” said Kerry. “We
settled on an Osprey design home
Kerry and Shannon Bell relaxing at home
because we loved the huge kitchen with
all the extra cupboards and the master
bedroom because it’s just so spacious,”
Shannon added.
In the short time they have lived at
Halcyon Waters, when not on the road
travelling, the Bells have become part
of the fabric of the community. “We’ve
met such great friends here, everyone is
outgoing with a real passion for living,”
said Kerry. Shannon, a retired Teacher
who spent 21 years teaching Year Two
at Elanora has embraced life at Halcyon
Waters. With no playground duties to
worry about now, Shannon likes to catch
up with her girlfriends for a weekly chick
flick in Halcyon’s private cinema. An avid
reader she also spends quite a bit of time
in the library here, devouring the vast array
of books on offer.
The couple also like to keep fit and
regularly visit the fully equipped gym
Bells ring Halcyon’s praises
where for Kerry, the whole downsize
plan has included him shedding 10 kilos
since making the move with regular aqua
aerobics sessions in the heated pool.
Although ‘retired,’ Kerry still accepts high
ranking government consulting jobs in his
specialised field, working from home when
he chooses, so long as it doesn’t interfere
with their travel plans.
As for the travel, the Bells are also utter
Cricket tragics. The Bulls loving, self
confessed ‘Gabba Groupies’ are off on a
Cricket supporters tour of the West Indies
next year followed by a three month road
trip through America, Canada and Alaska
in an RV (recreational vehicle). “That’s
why we love it here, we know that when
we are travelling someone will water the
garden and our home base is secure. We
even get our mail re-directed to us by Sue
the Community Manager here at Halcyon
Waters,” said Shannon.

Halcyon home owners are dedicated to
fuelling the deployment of renewable
energy systems in an effort to help reduce
global warming. Ultimately this will save
substantial amounts of cash on their
household electricity bills. Already there are
120 rooftop solar systems being utilised by
home owners at both Halcyon Waters and
Halcyon Parks. The rooftop systems average
eight solar panels per household which
translates to 1.5 kilowatts of energy.
For a household that currently receives an
average quarterly bill of $300 ($1, 200 per
year), this will see the bill reduced down
to just $12.50 per quarter or $50 per year
once the 1.5 kilowatt solar roof system is
installed. That means on average a saving
of $1,150 per year on the electricity bill.
In terms of saving on dangerous carbon
emissions, the average Halcyon household
will save 3,960kg per year (which is
equivalent to about 36 strapping front
row forwards!). Collectively Halcyon home
owners are already saving a whopping 500
tonnes of carbon emissions per year and
doing their bit to help save our planet.
One Halcyon Waters home owner, Doug
Naumann, has just received his last quarterly
bill and his electricity was absolutely free.
Not only was his electricity free, but he also
received a $300 rebate on his quarterly
bill. This means he’s on track to receive
a rebate of $1,200 per year... Imagine
multiplying this by 120 home owners and
the rebates are in excess of $140,000!
Crafty sew and sews raise over $60,000
Here comes the sun
What started out as five industrious ladies
getting together on the verandah of
Halcyon Parks’ Rec Club back in 2006 has
snowballed into a group of forty women
busily sewing for charity. In just six years the
group, spearheaded by Janece Palmer, has
raised over $60,000 including over $11,500
in the last twelve months for its number one
charity, the Caloundra Public Hospital.
Relying on generous donations of materials
and items from both the Halcyon Parks
community and the general public, this group
of charity queens has sewn and stitched
over 1,000 care bears and untold amounts
of baby clothes, knee rugs, aprons, handbags
and more, all to be sold for the cause.
Although an all female group, the girls
have no problem corralling the men
from Halcyon Parks to do various jobs
like collecting donated items and moving
boxes of baby clothes. From the humblest A group shot of the Halcyon Parks Craft Group
of beginnings the Halcyon Parks Craft
Group has become quite famous in the
Caloundra community, even attracting the
local Channel 7 news crew to come out
to conduct an interview on the groups
charitable activities.
The Craft Group has also shown its
generosity within the tight knit Halcyon
Parks community with $100 donations to all
the new self interest hobby groups including
the Halcyon Parks Croquet, Table Tennis,
Golf and Lawn Bowls Clubs. If you require
further information or would like to make a
donation of funds or materials to the Craft
Group contact Janece Palmer by emailing

The ‘jig’ is up!The Halcyon Waters community loves
to get together to have some fun and
celebrate, and St. Patrick’s Day is one of
the more popular events - to be sure!
Over 180 home owners attended the day
with most turning up dressed in the ‘green
theme’ vying for the great door prizes on
offer. Irish stew, tasty Guinness and beef
pies with mushy peas and mash potato
was the order of the day followed by what
else but Baileys cheesecake for afters.
Live entertainment was provided by
talented Irish duo, ‘Fiddle in the Middle’
who had the crowd tapping their
feet, and jigging to the gig! Renowned
comedian Fred Lang had the crowd in fits
of laughter with a host of hilarious stories
and topical jokes on the day. So popular
was St. Patrick’s Day 2011 that many
attendees phoned or emailed to say how
much they enjoyed the fun day and to
book them in for next year!
