I always joke and have no fear in saying that I actually hate running. However, I love the

journey. I love the people you meet and the stories you hear. Every runner has some

form of a story. In 2011, I started getting sick, gaining weight, and feeling horrible. After

two bouts in the ER over the course of as many weeks, I was told that there was a pos-

sibility that I had liver failure. This began an eight-month journey through doctors, spe-

cialists, and procedures that I would never wish on my worst enemy. This all yielded no

answers as to why my liver was failing. Then, one day, at Brooke Army Medical Center

in Fort Sam Houston, TX, one blood draw, and a liver specialist that had practicing liver

specialty for over 20 years burst into what I felt to be uncontrollable laughter. My liver

had healed itself and was operating within perfect parameters. The specialist was so

confused by this result, he keep me there for an additional week because he ran more

tests to ensure that I was actually good. He told me that the level of my enzymes and

what was going on with it at the beginning of that process eight months prior, that I had

a mortality rate of no more than 30 days. He told me that there was, and still is, no med-

ical reason why I was still alive. I was sent back home to my permanent duty station, but with one side note: he said that

chances of me running again were going to be slim to none, and he wanted to place me on a no-running profile. Yes. Me.

The one that loudly professes and has no shame admitting her distain to running begged to be given a chance to just try,

and let me be taken out of running on my own terms. It was hard. It was painful. Every. Step. Hurt. There were days that I

thought that I just needed to throw in the towel. But after four months of not giving up, I passed the Army Physical Fitness

test, which included….running. Then I passed another. I was moved to a different duty location, where I passed another.

Then, having been through that life-altering event, I decided that I was no longer going to say that I ‘wanted’ to do some-

thing. I was just going to do it. I signed up for the 2013 Atlanta Marathon for my first marathon. Having no clue as to what I

got myself into, I just started running, getting faster, feeling more fit, and kept on running. I completed multiple 5k and 10k

races before I graduated to half marathons. I qualified for Half Fanatics in the

Women’s Running Nashville event in 2013. My first race as a Half Fanatic was the

Atlanta Marathon, where I had no shame in wearing my HF gear. Though I com-

pleted it, I felt like I had let myself down, as I came in second to last. I found a sec-

ond marathon, revamped my training, and ran, ran some more, then kept on run-

ning. I completed my second and final marathon at Kiawah Island in December

2014. I came in last that time, but only because I stopped to help a runner that had

it a serious wall at mile 23. Though I’m done with marathons, with 14 lifetime races

under my belt to date and 19 planned half marathons for 2015, I will admit that I’m a

runner. If you run into me, you may hear an occasional cuss word geared towards

running, only because I still can’t get past the fact that I hate running; but I love run-

ning. I love hearing the stories, seeing new and unique places, and meeting new

friends. No matter what life throws at you, don’t give up, don’t give in, push your-

self, and know that if you are here, it is because God has a reason for it. Realize

truly how much of a gift each day is that you are given. Whether you run a sub two-

hour race or take four hours or more per race, you’re out there, and you’re motivat-

ing someone. I’m out there and I run because I can. Not always because I want to,

but because I can. Whenever I’m out there, I always try to meet and have a great

and meaningful conversation with at least one person, learn their name and their

story. Most of the times, I hear more than just one story, and I love them all.

Races can be run on either Saturday or Sunday.

We will take into consideration events that are on other days of the

week.

All races need to be official events, no training runs will count!

To be a Fanatic, Half Marathon times are not an issue, just that you finish

your races. Also that you are having fun! After all, isn't that

why we do this?
