Fix-G Track Hub :An ever present headache with “normal” fixed hubs is the assembly of a drive cog that is attached by a thread being pulled in both directions by the pedal torque. of course, the traditional solution to avoiding the cog unwinding itself from the hub in the reverse direction is a left hand threaded lockring, butted up tight against the cog. But, as many riders have found out, this historic system can be relatively volatile.

Halo thought… there has to be a better way:a splined hub body (with cogs that slide on) and an independent lockring… that never has to handle rotational forces from the drive.

Halo Bushed DJD Rear hub :after a long development period, the DJD hubs have become the DJ Disc single speed hub of choice for many pro riders (including sam Pilgrim). However, not content to sit back, we are introducing an all NEW DJD hub with a “Bushed Driver”.

BD hubs have been utilised successfully in the hardcore BmX market for quite a while, and the advantages of their lighter weight and improved durability over cartridge bearings are pretty well proven, especially when using compact cog sizes.The stresses caused in a single speed hub can be huge and, a bush spreads the loads involved over a much larger surface area than ball bearings can achieve, and therefore helps to avoid premature bearing failure.

28 DJD-BDIn addition to the BD features, we have fitted a lightweight alloy axle with tough, replaceable, m10 “Bolt-in” Cr-Mo fixings and alloy caps.We also know that bolt-in fittings can be tricky if the axle starts to spin when turning the bolt, (as you have nothing to hold) - so we have also added a 6mm Hex broach deep inside the axle – just in case the axle starts to spin when you don’t want it to !

The mighty Planet X bargain machine keeps on rolling and, for a no-nonsense, no-frills set of training wheels, you’ll struggle to find better value than these. The 1,607g weight for the set isn’t at all bad, and with a semi-aero rim, bladed spokes and lightweight sealed hubs, the spec isn’t too shabby either. The austere, no logo, plain silver appearance has a certain understated cool to it and they come supplied with a decent set of QR levers. The ride isn’t going to set the world on fire but it’s not at all harsh, there’s no noticeable flex and they

don’t feel draggy. On the flat, there’s even a slight feeling of them cutting through the wind. Despite a good pounding on some extremely poor surfaces there’s no hint of them going out of true, and although the braking surface is a bit slick initially, it quickly beds down with use.

Niggling rant out of the way first: while we don’t expect to get QR skewers with a wheelset, surely not including rim tape is a bit tight fisted – if you’ve bought them and want to head straight out, you’d be really miffed there wasn’t any in the box. That said, even once you’ve forked out an extra few quid on the tape, the Halos are still great value. A solid 24 pattern on the front and a bombproof 32 2-cross on the rear, combined with a quality sealed hub, ticks the durability box. At 1,763g they’re one of the heaviest on test but

still ride well. There’s nothing sparkling about their performance, though they’re comfortable, soaking up bumps without being sloppy. Rolling and acceleration are good and, despite ascents exposing sluggish tendencies, you’d only really notice if you’re training ride got a bit racy.

When we normally receive a batch of test wheels, Reynolds are at the upper end of the price range and the lower end of the weight spectrum. Doing a double take with the Shadow on both counts – especially being the heaviest wheelset on test at 1,827g – it’s interesting to see how Reynolds fare at this end of the market. The spec is good, offering a 31mm depth rim, 20-spoke radial front lacing and 24-spoke 2-cross on the rear, using DT spokes connected to own-brand hubs. They’re also the cheapest hand-built

wheels on test. Despite a few twangs as the wheels settle on the first ride, they handle well and stay true. Rolling at steady pace the ride quality is good and, especially on the flat, pleasantly plush. When climbing, though, you definitely feel their weight and there’s a tangible slowness to accelerate.

puncture preventionThere are few things worse for a cyclist than that sickening hiss on a cold and wet day. If the Puncture Fairy is out to get you, you might not be able to ward her off but it’s worth trying the following...

Be prepared Always carry at least two spare tubes and practise changing them. Some tyre and rim combinations require tyre levers and others don’t, but don’t leave it until you’re stuck to find out. Carry at least a micro-pump but a CO2 cartridge is far better in the cold. Finally, a mobile phone and cash are get-home- essentials on winter rides.

road positioning Don’t ride in the gutter as that’s where, especially after rain, puncture-causing debris accumulates. Ride a metre out into the road and hold your position. Remember: you’re entitled to be there.

pre-ride checks Check your tyre pressure, but also carefully check your tyres for any embedded flints, stones or thorns. They might not have caused a puncture yet but could do once you get rolling. Inspect for cuts and gashes and, if in doubt, change the tyre. Better to do it in the dry and warm than freezing on the roadside.

Tyre pressure Although higher pressure will make impact/pinch flats more unlikely, if you hit a pothole at 40km/hr you’re going to blow. A slightly lower pressure allows the tyre to deform around small pebbles, reducing the likelihood of penetration. 10-20 psi less will also significantly improve your grip on the road.

Tyre type Winter roads are no place for lightweight racing tyres, but equally don’t make the mistake of buying cheap and heavy monstrosities. A decent set of all-season tyres will set you back a bit but is the best puncture prevention measure you can take. Look for Kevlar protection, decent grip and, frame allowing, consider stepping up to 25c or 28c width.
