Reading stats for Hampton third grade

Our African American Students had a spike, whereas our White Caucasian students were fairly steady, with a slight dip in the third grade.

Reading stats for Hampton fourth grade

This slide depicts Reading statistics for our fourth grade students. Again there was a spike for our African American students and our White (Caucasian) students showed a more steady line, with a slight variance.

This slide reflects stats for fifth grade and reflects more of a disparity for both groups: African American and White Caucasian.

2010 MSA Reading stats for all Hampton students

This slide indicates overall performance for 2010 MSA reading statistics at Hampton. Whereas these stats are very good, we need to do more!

How can we move forward?

• We can hammer out a plan to excel with reading

• Engage students

• Make Reading a green is for “go” standard. “I can go forward and read well and better!”

Meet George our reading octopus

• This is George. He is our “Reading octopus”!

• In each tentacle he will hold a book to encourage our students to read

• George wants to read well through the “Read Well” program

How will this work?• We need to engage students!

• Create a reading lab

• Ask for volunteer students for the lab

• Ask for parent volunteers for the lab

• Introduce the “Read Well” program

• Utilize new technology to excite students and exchange reading news and data

Introduce the “Read Well” Program

• “Read Well” is a primary curriculum program

• “Read Well” takes the needs of each student into account

• Each student is placed in small groups based on assessments

• Daily interaction

• Curriculum includes:

Phonemics awareness

Vocabulary

Reading Fluency

Comprehension

Solo and Duet story time

Technology changes at HamptonCreate a grade level websiteCombine with a school level websiteDevelop a “mashup”.What is a mashup?

A mashup uses and combines data from two or more sources to create new services

Hampton will use mashup to utilize library books, and the grade level and school level websites.

Goals for the next few years

• Judge effectiveness of “Read Well” at end of FY11

• Goal is to have 100% proficient Reading Scores with “No Child Left Behind” by 2014

• Institute a new reading lab and have George the reading octopus encourage student reading

• Engage students and parents through a “Reading Fair” in the Spring

• Institute grade level reading website

• Institute school level reading website

• Encourage staff buy-in

• Ask for student volunteers for the reading lab

• Ask for parent volunteers for the reading lab
