AIAA HRS Seeks Nominations for Young EOY The AIAA HRS nominations for the 2017 "Robert A. Mitcheltree Young Engineer of the Year Award" are due by September 23, 2016. Through this award, one member of the AIAA HRS is recognized each year for distinguishing himself or herself in some facet of aerospace engineering practice as a young professional. To qualify, a candidate must have less than 15 years of professional experience and be less than 35 years of age as of December 31, 2017, and be a member of AIAA Hampton Roads Section.

Please submit a one-page preliminary nomination that includes contact information for the candidate, lists degrees earned, and summarizes significant accomplishments. Please also attach the nominee's publication list, which will not be counted towards the 1 page limit. The AIAA HRS will select their winner and this person will then be submitted as HRS's nominee for the local Peninsula Engineers Council's annual young engineer award (i.e., PEC Doug Ensor Award) and the national AIAA young engineer of the year award (i.e., AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award). Please submit your nomination electronically by COB Friday, September 23rd to: [email protected] or [email protected]. Please contact Becky Stavely (757-864-3882) or Matt Wells (757-864-6482) or if you have any questions.

Hampton Roads Section

The Hampton Roads Section (HRS) of AIAA, which has a membership of nearly 1100 out of more than 30,000 total for AIAA, represents geographically southern Virginia and southern West Virginia. The membership is made up of employees and contractors of NASA Langley Research Center, aerospace industry professionals, retirees, as well as student chapters at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) in Hampton, and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The Hampton Roads Section actively participates in AIAA national initiatives and programs. Local programs are held throughout the year and cater to the needs of the entire membership including young professionals and retirees. The Section annually awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning careers related to aerospace engineering. The Section has a very active program in pre-college education. For more information, please also visit the Section website at https://info.aiaa.org/Regions/NE/Hampton_Roads/default.aspx.

AIAA HRS Golf Tournament The 23rd Annual Golf Outing to Support the "Futures in Aerospace" Scholarship is scheduled for October 13, 2016. The entry deadline is October 6th.

The 2016 AIAA HRS Annual Golf Tournament will be held at the Eaglewood Raptor Course, Langley Air Force Base. Cost is $65 per player ($260.00 per team) to cover greens fee, cart, practice balls, food and tournament prizes. For tournament information, see the flyer on the AIAA HRS website at https://info.aiaa.org/Regions/NE/Hampton_Roads/Lists/Announcements6/Attachments/7/23rd_AIAA_Golf-v1initialrelease.pdf. The flyer provides starting time, format, prizes, and other details.

A final list of prizes is still under development. If you know of someone willing and able to donate a prize to our worthy cause, please let Rich Wahls know ([email protected]).

An entry form is also on the website: https://info.aiaa.org/Regions/NE/Hampton_Roads/Lists/Announcements6/Attachments/7/Entry_Form-2016v1.pdf

If you are putting your entry in the mail to Rich, please email him to say it is on the way.

Last year, we had a good turnout with 36 players. Let’s get out there in force this year and top that number – please encourage your co-workers of all skill levels to get a team together and have another good tournament.

Remember – it is about the scholarship fund … and bragging rights!!

AIAA Technical Committee Open for Nominations The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Technical Committee (TC) nomination period is now open for nominations for terms beginning May 1, 2017. The AIAA has requested that all nominations be submitted electronically this year. For non-NASA Langley members of the local Section, you can directly apply on the AIAA website for TC membership by clicking on Membership & Communities, Committees, AIAA Technical Committees, and then AIAA Technical Activities Online Nomination. However, for NASA Langley TC member nominations, per LAPD 1150.4 “NASA Langley Research Center’s American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Technical Committee Membership Policy,” the Langley Center Director must approve all Langley TC member nominations and only those approved by the Langley Center Director will be supported (travel paid for) by Langley. To comply with AIAA and NASA Langley requirements, supervisors will be requesting from their employees a "Statement of Interest" including the employee’s name, organization, position title and grade and the AIAA Technical Committee(s) for which they would like to be considered. The employee should state whether the request is for new TC membership or for a renewal and briefly explain why they are interested in joining the TC. The supervisor will then forward this information through his organizations OUM to OHCM and the Center Director for final approval. Approved or disapproved candidates will be notified via email no later than October 17th. Those approved applicants will then be able to go to the AIAA website at http://www.aiaa.org and submit their application directly to the AIAA. Per AIAA requirements, applications must be submitted by November 1st or the application will be deferred until 2018. "Statements of Interest" must be received by the NASA OUMs by September 9th. NASA employees interested in becoming TC members may want to be proactive and provide their supervisor with a "Statement of Interest" for consideration before the September 9th deadline.

Membership Information

In an effort to reach all HRS members we are updating our e-mail mailing list once a month. To help us reach you with news and information on upcoming programs, please verify that your contact information is accurate in the AIAA database, especially your e-mail address. This can be done by accessing your account at the AIAA website, www.aiaa.org under the topic “My Information.” Something as simple as an e-mail “typo” could prevent you from receiving Section information. Student members should keep their record current, especially seniors, to take advantage of AIAA’s offer of one free year of Professional membership (2nd year 1/2 price). AIAA encourages students to transition into professional members and to become active in AIAA at the Section, Regional & National levels in order to take advantage of all the benefits AIAA has to offer. HRS is offering free program admission to new AIAA members joining at any of the HRS-sponsored events! For more information, please email your inquiries to [email protected].
