Hannah More Primary School Newsletter 6th June 2014 This week’s SUPERKIDS!! Caterpillar - Zakiah Ladybird - Maida Elmer class – Mohamed Aden Gruffalo class – Veliesha BFG - Toby Enormous Crocs - Najah & Yaasir Year 3 Woodpecker – Laverno Year 3 Kingfisher – Finlay Year 4 Swift - Rayan Year 4 Swallow - Ahmad Year 5 – Hassan Year 6 - Jibriil Hello everyone, Monday was a very special day for me. A birthday with a zero in it (and maybe a 5 as well!). Anyone else with a birthday on the 2nd of June will know that it rarely falls in school time, as it is usually in the half term holiday. This special one, however, was just meant to be at Hannah More. I had such a lovely day with balloons, cards, cake and presents all in a fabulous assembly. I’d like to say a huge thank you to Mr Webster for organising it all, Laura for her delicious cake, Lisa for the balloons and all the staff for their huge kindness and the children for their many many birthday wishes all day long! It has been a busy week at school; Year 2 completed their SATs tests. The children worked really hard and focussed well, but they are looking forward to returning to their normal timetable next week. There was lots of outdoor learning despite some very rainy weather! Both Year 5 and 6 visited the Harbourside to complete a special discovery trail around the docks. Year 3 Kingfisher class had a fantastic day out in the Forest of Dean yesterday, supported by some of our lovely Reading Buddies from Deloitte. Thankfully the sun shone for them! Our Year 5 and 6 football team played a return match this week, visiting Whitehall Primary School. Sadly, they were defeated 2-1, but the team played very well indeed. We look forward to more fixtures against other local schools Have a good weekend, Sue Ramsay, Headteacher This term ends on Tuesday 22nd July Holiday playscheme runs 28 July - 29 August Term 1 starts Wednesday 3 September

News from the classes …

Reception Ladybird and Caterpillar classes … This week we have been practising our maths. We have revised adding and subtracting and started to learn about money. We have also been developing our questioning skills by asking and answering questions about what we did over half term. Please help at home by practising the names of different coins (e.g. 1p, 20p,

50p, £1).

YEAR 1 Elmer and Gruffalo classes … In literacy we have been learning the story “Lost and Found” We have been ordering pictures from the story and creating wanted posters. In numeracy we have been learning to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and we have been ordering numbers to 50. You can help at home by learning about different animals from around the world.

YEAR 2 BFG and Enormous Crocodile classes…This week the children have been doing their SATs tests in reading, writing and maths. The children worked really hard and they all deserve a rest this weekend! We celebrated today with a party with yummy food and games. Parents will find out the results of the tests when the reports are sent out in July. At home, have a fun active time at the weekend! YEAR 3 Woodpecker and Kingfisher classes… In literacy we explored poetry and wrote about Egyptian animals. In maths we learned how to create and interpret bar charts. We also started our Ancient Egypt topic by looking at where Egypt is and the importance of the River Nile. Next week we will be looking at capacity (litres and millilitres). You

can help at home by encouraging your child to think about the capacity of different things and getting them to test out their measuring skills.

YEAR 4 Swift and Swallow classes… In maths this week we learnt about measures. We used a ruler to measure different lengths, and converted between centimetres, millimetres, metres and kilometres, as well as between litres and millilitres, and grams and kilograms. In literacy we have learnt a report off by heart about the Bristol Ridge-Back Dragon, and have learnt about the key features used in this kind of text—topic sentences, connectives, questions, and adverb starters. You can help at home by asking your child to retell the Bristol

Ridge-Back Dragon text to you with their actions. YEAR 5 Owl… This week Year 5 have enjoyed the end to their week by going on a trail around the city’s Floating Harbour area. They have also created their own trails for around the school, making up clues and finding a final destination. In literacy they have started a new story called “Kidnapped” and started the week by pretending to kidnap a member of our class! YEAR 6 Eagle… This week we have been working hard as a team—in particular when introducing our new story “Kidnapped” where they had to work together to ensure Zubair came back to class! We have visited the harbourside this week on an exciting (yet very exhausting) treasure trail, which the children will be using to create their own the next few weeks. Finally, we have been learning songs and auditioning for parts for our Leavers Assembly—all children should now have a part to learn. You can help at home by helping your child to learn their lines so

that they know them off by heart.
