Message from the County Librarian:

The Trinity County Library will commemorate its 100-year anniversary this coming November. After requesting assistance from the California State Library, the Board of Supervisors established the Trinity County Free Library in November 1916, acquiring John Carr’s blacksmith shop on Main Street in September 1917 where the library remained until its move into new quarters in 1991. The new library was dedicated in September 1992. The Trinity County Library has certainly come a long way from modest beginnings, evolving into a modern service provider by offering a variety of print and digital resources, internet access and programs. All of this would not have been possible without vision, strong community support and membership in local and regional cooperatives. You are cordially

After the building had been completed in 1991, over 600 members of the community, including Barbara’s Lewiston elementary students, held a ceremonial book brigade. They lined up on Main Street between the old and new libraries and passed 230 books from hand to hand on a chilly December day. It is one of Barbara’s favorite memories of the opening.

Feed Your Mind: Read a Tasty Book!

Summer Reading Program 2016

The Friends of the Library organized as the Weaverville Friends of the Library in August of 1979. In 1983 their name was changed to Trinity County Friends of the Library. In 1986 they incorporated in order to seek out gifts and bequests, with the intent of helping the library move to larger quarters. They were successful in 1991 when the current library was built. This momentous event would not have happened without the Friends.

Public libraries and their friends were inspired by Andrew Carnegie's generosity to communities across America. The number of public libraries in the United States grew from 637 in 1898 to 3,500 by 1919, the year that Carnegie made his last grant. Half of the new libraries were funded by Carnegie, and his philanthropy stimulated fundraising and library development by community members.

Libraries need Friends. Many American public libraries were established through the efforts of community members who understood the value of libraries to their communities and also understood that libraries needed community support to survive. Did you know that a criterion for securing a Carnegie grant was a demonstrated commitment by members of the community to raise additional funds and support for a new library? This concept hasn’t changed over the course of the past 150 years.

If you would like to become a Friend of the Library, annual fees are $15 for individuals, and $20 for families. Membership forms are available at the Trinity County Library. As a Friend, you are invited to attend our monthly meetings at the Weaverville Branch the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 3:15 pm.

“Feed your mind: Read a tasty book” was the theme of this year’s summer reading program. Julie Feely organized the event, with assistance from nutrition educator Ashlie Clark, who brought the colorful fruit and healthful snacks. Guest storytellers read to the children for about 45 minutes, followed by a nutrition activity and snack. Children designed faces on a plate using cut-up strawberries, grapes, melon, blueberries, kiwi, and other colorful fruit, and then ate their design. They helped themselves to a healthful snack as well. Children got to choose a free book and were treated to ice cream during the final program.

WEE CHICKS Story time Thursdays 10:30-12:00

Join us for Wee Chicks, a program designed for children ages 0-5.  The program features new and classic picture books read by the ebullient Jay Underwood.  Julie Feely coordinates the program, and engages children with songs, dances, and finger plays.  Julie always has a fun age-appropriate craft at the end.
