A special thanks for all who offered

comfort and prayers both during

my stay at the hospital, then

catalyst and for the passing of my

brother Delmer and my Precious

daughter Deb. It has been very

hard on me. I really appreciate all

the support from friends as well as

staff, and for all the lovely cards I

have received. Thanks again and

God bless you all.

Thank you to everyone who came to visit me, sent cards and made phone calls to me while I was in Catalyst recovering from my broken leg. 11 weeks is a long time to be off your feet but I am back home now and up and running. Thank you all again. I really appreciate your care and concern.

Peggy Dowd

Thanks to everyone for all their

thoughts, prayers and good wishes

during my stay at Catalyst, it was

very appreciated. A big thank you

to all the employees in Catalyst,

they’re a great group and made my

stay much more enjoyable. Thank

you to the employees in Trilogy,

they did a good job trying to help

me get back on my feet. I met a lot

of nice people and hope to see you

again but not necessarily in that

setting.

Greetings from Spiritual Care

Keeping busy in Spiritual Care. It’s incredible to think that come the 1st of June, I will have been here at Friendship Haven for 1 year. The months and events have gone by fast. A few things to look forward to in the coming month: Hymn Sings: both in Sunday worship and at Thursday Vespers Prayer Shawl Ministry has begun again. There is yarn available, provided by Friendship Haven. We will be meeting on Mondays at 3pm in either the Rose Legler Room or the Kenyon Place Conference Room. For the next month, we will gather each week, beginning in June we will meet following the monthly Town Hall (the 2nd Monday of the month). Vacation Bible School: look for more information in the coming weeks. We are planning this event to happen in August. Yes, music, bible story, craft, snack… In June, the Tompkins Celebration Center will be closed for renovations to the sprinkler system beginning June 12th and will reopen July 13th. For the Sunday worship, we will be worshiping in the River Ridge Dining Room. Vespers worship will continue to take place as well, with a place to be determined. The first year has gone by fast, I look forward to the years to come. Peace, ~Pastor Jennifer

In Sympathy… The residents and the staff would like to extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of…

Doug’s Corner …… “UnLOCKINg the Power of Philanthropy” Is There Life After “Tax Season?” Of course, this is a silly question; yet, I know many people who are relieved when April 15 is behind them. Given all the warm friendship and activities here at Friendship Haven, I trust that filing your taxes didn’t seem that bad. Whatever your opinion of April 15, here are a few “stress free” thoughts to consider at whatever pace suits you best. Consider “ReDirecting” Your SOCIAL CAPITAL! “Social Capital” may sound complicated, but it simply refers to that portion of your wealth you are not allowed to keep. With good planning, you can legally reduce some of your taxes; though, at some point, you must share some amount of taxes (your “social capital”) with various governmental entities to be used for the public good. The takeaway here is this: you cannot KEEP your “social capital,” but you can CONTROL how some or all of it is used. The same tax code that requires you to part with “social capital” also provides benefits when you give to your favorite charitable organizations, also for the public good. The following are basic ideas that might give you more CONTROL over your “social capital.” Make Your Money Go Farther If you are charitably minded and interested in increasing your spendable income, consider a life income plan. The plan involves a gift to a charity like Friendship Haven and a lifetime income stream back to you. Imagine an asset that is producing little or no income for you now giving you between 4% and 8% per year. A partial income tax deduction for this plan helps you CONTROL some of your “social capital.”

VOLUME 5, ISSUE 5

Give Away the “RIGHT” Assets When giving to favorite charities, most people consider their checking account and the size of check they can afford to write. What if it was possible to make a meaningful gift AND CONTROL your “social capital” by donating something other than cash? Think of it in one or both of the following ways . . . First, consider assets you or your children no longer want or need. This might be anything from tangible assets like automobiles, jewelry, or artwork to intangibles like a life insurance policy. You CONTROL “social capital” and rid yourself of something you no longer wish to manage. Second, consider this general “rule” -- give taxable assets to charity, and keep non-taxable assets for yourself and your children. If it is possible to do your charitable giving using taxable assets like your IRA, U.S. Savings Bonds, or appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds, then you gain CONTROL of some of your “social capital.” In conclusion, I have shared the very basics of these ideas; but, I promise none of them are very complicated. Because no two people or families are alike, simple conversation is necessary to explore the plans for giving that will help you CONTROL more of your “social capital.” Please let me hear from you, or allow Denise Halverson to connect us. Now, in keeping with my thoughts about the warm friendship and activities here at Friendship Haven, I am off to one of the Friday “Happy Hour” celebrations. Perhaps I’ll see you there.
