The story of Harper is one of the most disturbing cases of animal cruelty I have yet experienced. An Ontario SPCA inspector found the 5-week-old kitten lying, concealed, in a closet with serious burns to his paws, stomach area and undersides of his limbs. His owner had not sought care for this innocent kitten. Rushed to a local veterinary clinic, the kitten was placed on pain medication and antibiotics. KHS staff and volunteers were immediately committed to looking after this innocent life. After 10 weeks of around- the-clock care, which included treatment in a foster home, Harper was placed in an adoptive home. On August 11, 2014, Harper’s owner pleaded guilty to permitting distress to an animal under the Ontario SPCA Act. The owner received a lifetime ban on owning, caring for or having custody, care or control of any animal. The owner also received a two-year probation during which time Ontario SPCA agents are permitted to inspect the residence to ensure compliance with the court order. Overcoming the difficulties of visiting a shelter

Many people are reluctant to come to the shelter to adopt a family pet. They feel uncomfortable at the prospect of seeing so many animals surrounded by cement walls, steel or chain-link cages and metal bowls. Those feelings are valid and arise from our human perspective. From the animal’s perspective, while a shelter is never as

ideal as family life, it is a safe, warm place to stay, with regular food and water. At the shelter, no animal sleeps on a metal or cement floor, and our staff and volunteers ensure that each animal receives the health care it needs as well as a pat or cuddle every day. So how can you minimize your own stress level enough to visit the shelter and find the perfect family pet?Visit our website: It has photos and biographies of each animal and will help you focus on the animals you want to see when you arrive. Talk to our staff: Our staff members know the animals and can help you find that one special animal you are looking for. Be prepared to invest some time: Finding a new family member is a process. Be prepared to come more than once to look for and find that perfect pet. Bring your family members: We believe that adopting a pet is a family decision; each family member needs to support the decision to care for a pet. Visiting a shelter to adopt an animal can be a very rewarding experience. With some planning, support and a new perspective, you, or someone you know, will find that very special pet, and the rewards that it will bring will be more than worth it.

The contribution our volunteers make is a vital part of the Kingston Humane Society. Since January 2014, our volunteers have contributed over 4,000 hours to the Society! Volunteers at KHS help in a variety of ways: as dog walkers, cat cuddlers, board members; with cleaning, driving, adoption events, office assistance, the lost and found pet program, fostering animals, fundraising,

special events and more! We are so thankful for everything our volunteers do for us; we truly could not do what we do without the dedication and support of our volunteer team.

Currently we are seeking volunteers with experience in fundraising to assist with various projects. If you are interested in this or would like more information on our volunteer program, please contact Sue Jones, KHS Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected].

A big, tail-wagging thank-you to everyone who helped to make the 16th Annual Big Paws at the Point fundraising walk and canine fun day on Sunday, September 7th a success! The day was full of activities, including the pledge walk, a vendor marketplace, auctions, food, music, pet photos, police dog demonstrations and games for our four-legged friends. To the walkers who collected pledges, pledgers, event sponsors, vendors and groups with booths, an army of volunteers, donors of auction items and businesses who donated services for logistics, the animals at the shelter thank you for your support!
