T he eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring from the 15th

through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan March 30-April 7 2018 Passover (Pesach) commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt Pesach is observed by avoiding leaven and highlighted by the Seder meals that include four cups of wine eating matzah and bitter herbs and retelling the story of the Exodus

I n Hebrew it is known as Pesach (which means ldquoto pass overrdquo) because G‑d passed over the Jewish homes when killing the

Egyptian firstborn on the very first Passover eve

The Story in a Nutshell After many decades of slavery to the Egyptian pharaohs during which time the Israelites were subjected to backbreaking labor and unbearable horrors G‑d saw the

peoplersquos distress and sent Moses to Pharaoh with a message ldquoSend forth My people so that they may serve Merdquo But despite numerous warnings Pharaoh refused to heed G‑drsquos command G‑d then

sent upon Egypt ten devastating plagues afflicting them and destroying everything from their livestock to their crops

At the stroke of midnight of 15 Nissan in the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE) G‑d visited the last of the ten plagues on the Egyptians killing all their firstborn While doing so G‑d spared the children of Israel ldquopassing overrdquo their homesmdashhence the name of the holiday Pharaohrsquos resistance was broken and he virtually chased his former slaves out of the land The Israelites left in such a hurry in fact that the bread they baked as provisions for the way did not have time to rise Six hundred thousand adult males plus many more women and children left Egypt on that day and began the trek to Mount Sinai and their birth as G‑drsquos chosen people

In ancient times the Passover observance included the sacrifice of the paschal lamb which was roasted and eaten at the Seder on the first night of the holiday This was the case until Temple in

Passover Observances

Passover is divided into two parts

The first two days and last two days (the latter commemorating the splitting of the Red Sea) are full-fledged holidays Holiday candles are lit at night and kiddush and sumptuous holiday meals are enjoyed on both nights and days We donrsquot go to work drive write or switch on or off electric devices We are permitted to cook and to carry outdoors (click here for the details)

The middle four days are called Chol Hamoed semi-festive ldquointermediate daysrdquo

when most forms of work are permitted

NO CHAMETZ To commemorate the unleavened bread that the Israelites ate when they left Egypt we donrsquot eatmdashor even retain in our possessionmdashany chametz from midday of the day before Passover until the conclusion of the holiday Chametz means leavened grainmdashany food or drink that contains even a trace of wheat barley rye oats spelt or their derivatives and which wasnrsquot guarded from leavening or fermentation This includes bread cake cookies cereal pasta and most alcoholic beverages Moreover almost any processed food or drink can be assumed to be chametz unless certified otherwise

Ridding our homes of chametz is an intensive process It involves a full-out spring-cleaning search-and-destroy mission during the weeks before Passover and culminates with a ceremonial search for chametz on the night before Passover and then a burning of the chametz ceremony on the morning before the holiday Chametz that cannot be disposed of can be sold to a non-Jew (and bought back after the holiday)

MATZAH

Instead of chametz we eat matzahmdashflat unleavened bread It is a mitzvah to partake of matzah on the two Seder nights (see below for more on this) and during the rest of the holiday it is optional

It is ideal to use handmade shmurah matzah which has been zealously guarded against moisture from the moment of the harvest You can purchase shmurah matzah here

THE SEDERS

The highlight of Passover is the Seder observed on each of the first two nights of the holiday The Seder is a fifteen-step family-oriented tradition and ritual-packed feast

The focal points of the Seder are

Eating matzah Eating bitter herbsmdashto commemorate the bitter slavery endured by the Israelites

Drinking four cups of wine or grape juicemdasha royal drink to celebrate our newfound freedom

The recitation of the Haggadah a liturgy that describes in detail the story of the Exodus from Egypt The Haggadah is the fulfillment of the biblical obligation to recount to our children the story of the Exodus on the night of Passover It begins with a child asking the traditional ldquoFour Questionsrdquo

A Passover Message Passover celebrating the greatest series of miracles ever experienced in history is a time to reach above nature to the miraculous But how are miracles achieved Letrsquos take our cue from the matzah Flat and unflavored it

embodies humility Through ridding ourselves of inflated egos we are able to tap into the miraculous well of divine energy we all have within our souls

THE WEEK BEFORE PESACH ndash In Jersualem

The day before Pesach we awoke and had the last of our chametz on the balcony of the bed amp breakfast were staying in

As we chatted and burned our little packet of chometz we noticed that it was getting smokier and smokier by the minute We looked out from the balcony that took in the view of the whole city

The air was a thick blanket of hazy heavy smoke that permeated throughout the entire city and it was getting hard to breathe We were quite frankly in awe and had never witnessed anything like this before We retreated inside our apartment and decided to do some exploring in the neighbourhood

On our way to the market to get some ldquoKosher for Pesach foodrdquo we passed the little shtetl of religious Jews across the street from us

They were burning their chometz and tending their fires in big garbage cans and open pits What a sight to behold

MAHANE YEHUDA MARKET The souk (shuk

locally) is Ground Zero for Jerusalemite Passover shopping and general holiday preparation with many of its stalls adorned with seasonal pink garlic its dark green leaves woven into stands the heads the size of baseballs Bernie and I were amazed at all the people getting Passover food it was elbow-to-elbow One of the stores we stopped by was the cheese place Basher the world-famous cheese emporium has been kosher-for-Passover for a week replacing the flaky buttery brioches and crunchy baguettes with French-made ldquoMatsotrdquo [plural of matzah] imported with an eye on the thousands of French immigrants and visitors crowding the markets alleyways Every year Basher mixes up a quarter of a ton of haroset the sweet paste made of fruits and nuts that is served at the Passover dinner and represents in its color and texture the mortar used by the Israelites when enslaved in Egypt

Eli Basher and his brother Dudi are Mahane Yehuda veterans (or vatikim as we call them) Their grandfather and father ran a successful restaurant in the shuk for many years

Now Eli Basher has a shop that carries over 700 kinds of kosher cheeses Actually I read one article that claims 850 cheeses

David Basher their father named after his grandfather who founded the establishment said that his version of haroset which is composed of dates walnuts almonds ldquoand a good amount of wine mdash actually several crates of one of Israelrsquos best winesrdquo mdash was almost gone About ten small tubs of it could still be found behind the counter where they were going for $15 for what appeared to be a few tablespoons In Basherrsquos iteration haroset resembled royal jelly more than grouting

THE WEEK BEFORE PESACH ndash In Jersualem

The day before Pesach we awoke and had the last of our chametz on the balcony of the bed amp breakfast were staying in

As we chatted and burned our little packet of chometz we noticed that it was getting smokier and smokier by the minute We looked out from the balcony that took in the view of the whole city

The air was a thick blanket of hazy heavy smoke that permeated throughout the entire city and it was getting hard to breathe We were quite frankly in awe and had never witnessed anything like this before We retreated inside our apartment and decided to do some exploring in the neighbourhood

On our way to the market to get some ldquoKosher for Pesach foodrdquo we passed the little shtetl of religious Jews across the street from us

They were burning their chometz and tending their fires in big garbage cans and open pits What a sight to behold

MAHANE YEHUDA MARKET The souk (shuk

locally) is Ground Zero for Jerusalemite Passover shopping and general holiday preparation with many of its stalls adorned with seasonal pink garlic its dark green leaves woven into stands the heads the size of baseballs Bernie and I were amazed at all the people getting Passover food it was elbow-to-elbow One of the stores we stopped by was the cheese place Basher the world-famous cheese emporium has been kosher-for-Passover for a week replacing the flaky buttery brioches and crunchy baguettes with French-made ldquoMatsotrdquo [plural of matzah] imported with an eye on the thousands of French immigrants and visitors crowding the markets alleyways Every year Basher mixes up a quarter of a ton of haroset the sweet paste made of fruits and nuts that is served at the Passover dinner and represents in its color and texture the mortar used by the Israelites when enslaved in Egypt

Eli Basher and his brother Dudi are Mahane Yehuda veterans (or vatikim as we call them) Their grandfather and father ran a successful restaurant in the shuk for many years

Now Eli Basher has a shop that carries over 700 kinds of kosher cheeses Actually I read one article that claims 850 cheeses

David Basher their father named after his grandfather who founded the establishment said that his version of haroset which is composed of dates walnuts almonds ldquoand a good amount of wine mdash actually several crates of one of Israelrsquos best winesrdquo mdash was almost gone About ten small tubs of it could still be found behind the counter where they were going for $15 for what appeared to be a few tablespoons In Basherrsquos iteration haroset resembled royal jelly more than grouting

The entire market had been gripped by a Passover frenzy Some bakeries for example one standout Duvdevan had just set out mounds of coconut macaroons and chocolate mousse rectangles on what appeared to be sterilized white display shelves ldquoWersquove been ready for the past hourrsquo one worker gasped appearing still to be out of breath On the other side of the spectrum Marzipan a favorite bakery of English-speaking Jerusalemites and American tourists was simply to shut down for a week the requirements of Passover preparations being too onerous to match Bernie and I couldnrsquot believe our eyes The sights the smells the throngs of people all

vying for position to pay was just crazy

We shuffled along being pushed and shoved through the crowds of people trying not to lose sight of each other Sometimes we felt like we

were three again hanging on to a corner of each others jackets so we wouldnrsquot get separated ldquoBeware of the pick-pocketrdquo someone yelled in the crowd everyone making sure their valuables were safe ldquoItrsquos a common threat in the market Pick-pockets work in groups to distract yourdquo said one women as we were swept away in the throng of people Finally we found some

pre-made food and made our way back to our BampB We strolled home through the back alley ways It was so amazing to see the little communities and hidden courtyards that were just not visible on the main streets Everyone was hustling preparing food for their seders Only the fathers and the little children were seen playing outside After lunch we moved to our hotel for the Passover week

THE WEEK OF PESACH

We arrived at Hotel Shani our new home for the week It was just a mere four blocks from our former B amp B and right in the middle of all the action - just off Hillel Street and the light rail transit line We walked over with luggage in tow and checked in just after lunch

There were blocks and blocks of paved pedestrian open air malls restaurants cafes and shuks Such a delight for to see A most enjoyable walk took all of 15 minutes

Our little boutique hotel was very quaint kosher for Pesach and quite reasonable We booked a family suite for the holiday It

included a mini-fridge an eating sitting area and a of course a Shabbatholiday elevator that stopped on every floor

A Kosher for Pesach daily breakfast was included at the Hotel Shani ldquoEnough for breakfast lunch amp maybe dinnerrdquo Everyone brought a satchel with them for breakfast so they could ldquoload uprdquo for the rest of the meals and put them in their mini-fridges

There were these two little old ladies who kept coming back down and

made three trips to fill their bags We couldnrsquot believe how much food they put away They followed the same routine for the entire week

Chabad of Rechavia The walk over to Chabad of Rechavia was so beautiful

We cut across some back alleys and strolled through a park where there was an outdoor library filled with religious books You could just pull out a book sit on a bench and read during Shabbat or the holidays and put it back when you finish No need to carry The walk It took about a half-hourmdash and we had take time and admire the old buildings along the way We finally arrived at Chabad of Rechavia for our Passover Seder Services were held outdoors in their beautiful courtyard just beneath the old windmill It was located just around the corner from the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem where our seder was to take place

We attended the Chabad of Rechavias Seder that was held in the banquet hall of the Jerusalem Great Synagogue

There were over 300 attending We were in the English Seder of 200 and the rest attended the Hebrew Seder next door at Chabad

We were seated at the table of a Chabad Rabbi from Boca Raton Florida - Rabbi Yossi Biston and his family They were so much fun and totally made our Pesach a very special one As they were staying not far from us we walked home

together at two in the morning It felt really safe as the streets were not empty Everyone was coming home from their respective seders

On the first day of Pesach we attended services at the Jerusalem Great Synagogue What an overwhelming experience The world-famous Cantor and Jerusalem choir sang the entire service

I t was a like a private concert I sat in the womens section after climbing three floors above the rising domed sanctuary I was eye-level to the exquisite stained glass windows that covered the entire wall above the bimah Chills ran up and down my spine as I closed my eyes and listened to the amazing choir

Under cantor Chaim Adler choirmaster Eli Jaffe and musical arranger Raymond Goldstein the Jerusalem Great Synagogue purveys a wide repertoire of hazanut (cantorial art) and traditional Ashkenazi liturgical choral music This where many a young hazan gets his break

Torah Readings

A Synopsis of the Passover Torah Reading

On the FIRST DAY OF PASSOVER we read from the book of Exodus (1221-51) of the bringing of the Passover Offering in Egypt the Plague of the Firstborn at the stroke of midnight and how On this very day G-d took the Children of Israel out of Egypt The reading for the SECOND DAY OF PASSOVER Leviticus 2226-2344 includes a list of the moadim -- the appointed times on the Jewish calendar for festive celebration of our bond with G-d the mitzvah to Count the Omer (the 49-day countdown to the festival of Shavuot which begins on the 2nd night of Passover) and the obligation to journey to the Holy Temple to to see and be seen before the avoiding leaven and eating matzah on Passover telling ones children the story of the Exodus and donning tefillin (Exodus 131-16) 2) A portion from the Parshah

of Mishpatim which includes the laws of the festivals (Exodus 2224-2319) 3) A section describing Moses receiving of the Second Tablets and G-ds revelation to

him of His Thirteen Attributes of Mercy which likewise concludes with the laws of the festivals (Exodus 341-26) when one of the intermediate days of Passover is Shabbat this is the reading read on that day and it begins 12 verses earlier

with 3312) 4) The story amp laws of the Second Passover (Numbers 91-14) On the SEVENTH DAY OF PASSOVER we read how on this day the sea split for the Children of Israel and drowned the pursuing Egyptians and the Song at the Sea sung by the people upon their deliverance (Exodus 1317-1526 full summary with commentary here) On the EIGHTH DAY OF PASSOVER we read Deuteronomy 1519-1617 Like the reading for the second day it catalogs the annual cycle of festivals their special observances and the offerings brought on these occasions to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem The Eighth Days special connection with the Future Redemption is reflected in the Haftorah (reading from the Prophets) for this day (Isaiah 1032-126)

Pesach Obligation for Women

Although women are obligated to observe all negative commandments of the Torah they are exempt from those positive commandments that must be performed at a particular time

[see Kiddushin 29a] However eating matzah on the night of the fifteenth of Nissan which is a time-bound mitzvah is an exception to the rule The Gemara (Pesachim 43b) derives this from a juxtaposition of the negative commandment against eating leavened bread and the positive commandment to eat matzah in one verse (Deuteronomy 163) You shall not eat leavened bread with it [ie the pesach offering] for seven days you shall eat matzos because of it The juxtaposition implies that anyone who is obligated to refrain from eating leavened bread is also obligated to eat matzah Since women must observe all the negative commandments they are obligated to eat matzah (Rashi)

Additional Prohibited Foods in Ashkenazi Communities - Kitniyot

While the forbidden foods on Pesach are relevant to all Jews regardless of cultural community the Ashkenazim further forbid many vegetables and foods which could be considered grains or used to make breads and cakes because they have the ability to ferment and become yeasty The additional prohibited foods are called kitniyot which are legumes including beans rice corn lentils dried beans and several vegetables NOTE According to the Orthodox Union other foods considered kitniyot include

bull Buckwheat Kasha and Millet

bull Peas and Green Beans

bull Snow Peas and Sugar-Snap Peas

bull Soybeans and Chickpeas

bull Sunflower Seeds and Poppy Seeds

It is forbidden to eat kityinot in Ashkenazi communities although they may remain in onersquos possession and can be used for other purposes An extensive list of kityinot has been compiled on Kashrutcom in consultation with several rabbinic and Kashrut authorities While the Ashkenazim have adopted these additional food prohibitions Sephardic communities did not implement the same rules Many Sephardim will eat rice and all vegetables are allowed When determining what is allowed and not allowed during Pesach it is best to follow the customs and traditions of the Jewish community or consult Rabbinic and Kashrut authorities
