from theRabbi's Study Our Jewish calendar contains four different New

Year’s days: Rosh Hashanah is the one that comes first to mind, but there are also three others, designated for cattle, trees, and taxes. I like to think this is because we need new beginnings more than once every twelve months.

As I write this, I am feeling that need for a new beginning. You’ll be reading this right around our secular New Year, January 1st, but I’m writing at the very end of October, just after the horrific synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh. It is a sad and disheartening time, and the only comfort is to be found in the solidarity of the Jewish community as we come together, and in the support that is being extended to us from our neighbours of different faiths – including our Syrian families, who were among the first to reach out with their condolences.

In difficult times, it is easy to feel powerless. But I am inspired by everyone who continues to show up at Temple and at synagogues around the world for Shabbat, classes, and events; who will not be scared away from their synagogue homes. Because the fact is, synagogues wouldn’t exist without Jews and the people who love them. We wouldn’t be here if you didn’t show up, if you didn’t make this community your own.

So we need you. But not just to show up. We need volunteers, people who can help spread the spirit of Temple that has kept us strong for 136 years. Whatever your interests or abilities may be, we have a place and a need for you. Maybe you’d like to bake for our celebrations after services. Maybe you want to visit sick people in hospital, or homebound seniors at home - especially in these long winter months. Maybe you want to lead (or learn how to lead) shiva minyans to comfort mourners, or help organize our spring Mitzvah Morning; to be an usher or greeter at services; or welcome people for classes and events, and sign them in with a smile. Maybe you want to call new members or invite a Jew-by-choice to sit with you at services, or eat at your Shabbat table. Maybe you love stories, and are willing to interview some of our “super seniors,” as we collect their oral histories. Maybe you want to be a docent at the museum or for the educational tour groups that come to Temple, or to volunteer at our gift shop. It’s even not too late to help with our Purim shpiel for those who are dramatically inclined, or our Purim carnival, for those who have always wanted to learn to operate a cotton-candy machine! There are countless ways you can make a real difference in the life of the synagogue, our members, and our community beyond the Temple’s walls.

It would be an honour for me, Rabbi Greenspan, Sari Roston (our Director of Community Engagement), or any member of the Temple team to sit down with you for a conversation, and to help you find the right place to get involved. In this new year of 2019, it could be a whole new beginning.

The synagogue which was attacked in Pittsburgh is called Tree of Life – etzchayim. The name comes from the line in our Torah service: “[Torah] is a tree of life to those who hold on to it.” As the days stay short and we feel the darkness, I encourage you to add life and light.

Rosh Hashanah est bien entendu celle à laquelle nous pensons d’abord, mais il y en a trois autres. Une dédiée aux bétails, une autre aux arbres et enfin une dernière aux impôts. J’aime à penser que c’est parce que nous avons besoin de renouveaux, et ce, plus d’une fois tous les douze mois.

En écrivant ces lignes, je ressens le besoin d’un nouveau départ. Lorsque vous lirez ceci, ce sera autour du 1er janvier, le Nouvel An séculier. Or, je rédige ces lignes à la toute fin du mois d’octobre à la suite de la terrible fusillade qui a eu lieu dans une synagogue de Pittsburgh. L’époque dans laquelle nous vivons est triste et désolante, notre seul réconfort réside dans la création de liens de solidarité entre les différentes communautés juives ainsi qu’avec le soutien offert par nos voisins provenant de différentes croyances et appartenances. Parmi ceux-ci, je souligne que nos familles syriennes ont été parmi les premières à nous transmettre leurs condoléances.

En période difficile, il nous arrive de nous sentir impuissants et dépassés. Mais les gens, qui continuent à venir célébrer Shabbat, à suivre des cours et à participer à différents événements que ce soit à notre Temple ou dans d’autres synagogues autour du monde, m’inspirent et me motivent, car la peur ne les empêche pas de fréquenter leurs synagogues. Car le fait est que sans la présence des Juifs et des gens qui les aiment, les synagogues n’existeraient tout simplement pas. Nous n’aurions pas de raison d’être sans votre présence et sans votre participation à la création de notre communauté.

Alors, nous avons besoin de vous. Non seulement de votre présence, mais aussi, et sinon plus, de votre engagement. Nous avons besoin de bénévoles, de gens prêts à faire rayonner et à diffuser l’esprit qui nous renforce depuis les 137 années d’existence du Temple. Peu importe vos champs d’intérêts et vos habiletés, nous avons une place pour vous et nous avons besoin de vous. Peut-être avez-vous envie de préparer de petites douceurs qui agrémenteront nos célébrations se tenant après les services ? Peut-être que visiter des personnes malades et esseulées dans les hôpitaux ou dans les centres de soins de longue durée pour personnes âgées vous rejoint davantage, spécialement durant les longs mois d’hiver à venir ? Aimeriez-vous guider ou apprendre à guider un Shiva minyans afin de réconforter les personnes endeuillées ? Donner un coup de main à l’organisation et au bon fonctionnement de nos Mitzvah Matin au printemps ? Ou encore accueillir et placer dans les gens durant les services ? Accueillir les visiteurs participant à nos cours et à nos événements est une belle occasion d’ouvrir nos portes avec un large sourire. Et ce n’est pas tout ! Vous pouvez également demander à un nouveau membre ou à un nouveau Juif-par-choix de s’asseoir à vos côtés durant le service ou de manger à votre table de Shabbat. Vous adorez l’histoire et vous raffolez entendre des récits de vie, alors venez interviewer des super séniors qui ont tant de choses à raconter et qui contribuent à la préservation de notre histoire orale. L’historien en vous adore les musées, devenez guide de notre musée en offrant des tours éducatifs aux groupes qui viennent nous visiter. Venez passer du temps à notre boutique-cadeaux. Vous avez l’âme d’un artiste et vous rêver de performer. Il n’est pas trop tard pour vous impliquer dans notre Purim shpiel ou de manier la machine à barbe à papa lors de notre Purim Carnaval. Enfin, comme vous pouvez le constater, il existe mille et une manières de participer et de faire une différence au sein de notre synagogue, de nos membres et de toute notre communauté à l’extérieur des murs du Temple.

Ce serait un honneur pour moi, Rabbi Greenspan, Sari Roston, directrice de l’engagement des membres, ou encore n’importe quel autre membre du personnel du Temple de prendre le temps de s’asseoir et de discuter avec vous afin de trouver l’activité qui vous convient le mieux. Faisons de 2019 une nouvelle année faite de renouveaux et de nouveaux départs.

Le nom de la synagogue, qui a été attaquée à Pittsburgh, est Tree of Life (l’Arbre de la vie) – etz chayim. Ce nom provient de phrases que nous prononçons durant le service de la Torah : « la Torah est un arbre de vie pour ceux qui s’en rendent maîtres. ». Comme les journées raccourcissent et que nous ressentons les effets de l’obscurité, je vous encourage à ajouter de la vie et de la lumière autour de vous.

president's message Last year at this time, I wrote about gratitude, that which our tradition

refers to as “hakarat hatov”, to recognize the good. I described its purpose as affirming, healing and, ultimately, helping us to repair the brokenness of the world (Tikkun Olam). Yet, as I write now on this bleak November day, nursing an equally miserable cold and still reeling from the horrific tragedy at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue, I am cognizant that recognizing the good is not always easy.

So I shall begin with the less complicated. I am grateful for a home that shelters me from inclement weather. I am grateful for my health and the little toddler in my life that passed on his sniffles. And, I am grateful for the thousands of people worldwide and of all faiths who responded to the social media campaign #ShowUpForShabbat.

Temple’s lower sanctuary was filled that day with those celebrating a B’not Mitzvah, with regular Shabbat goers and with folks coming out to show solidarity with the victims. I was grateful for a rabbi who so beautifully and delicately encouraged us to find joy in the service whilst comforting us as we collectively mourned.

As President, I am afforded the privilege of being an ex officio member of all the committees and Chair of the Board of Trustees, which means that I witness the incredible devotion, time, and generosity of our volunteers, staff, and clergy on an almost daily basis. Through easy and hard times, they are there, giving of themselves selflessly to ensure that Temple continues to thrive and meets the needs of its congregants. We are truly blessed and, for this, we should all be grateful.

As my two-year term ends this spring, I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your trust and for the deep honour of serving as your President.

le message de la présidenteL’an dernier à pareille date, j’écrivais au sujet de la gratitude que notre tradition

Cette reconnaissance de ce qui est bien et dont l’ultime but est d’affirmer, de réconforter et enfin de nous aider à réparer ce qui est brisé dans le monde dans lequel nous vivons (Tikum Olam). Pourtant, en écrivant ces lignes en cette morne journée de novembre et tout en soignant un simple rhume, je me repasse sans cesse les horribles images des événements survenus à la synagogue Tree of Life de Pittsburgh et je dois admettre qu’il n’est pas toujours facile d’être reconnaissant.

Je commencerai donc par des choses simples. Je suis reconnaissante d’avoir une maison qui me protège contre les intempéries. Je suis reconnaissante d’être en bonne santé, et ce, même si l’adorable bambin qui partage ma vie m’a refilé ses microbes. Et, je suis reconnaissante envers les milliers de personnes de toutes confessions religieuses qui, à travers le monde, ont participé à la campagne dans les médias sociaux #ShowUpForShabbat.

Ce jour-là, toute la première partie de notre sanctuaire, située devant les rideaux, était pleine à craquer de gens venus célébrer des B’not Mitzvah, de fidèles participant au service de Shabbat et de tous ceux présents en signe de solidarité envers les victimes de la tragédie. J’étais alors reconnaissante d’avoir un rabbin qui nous a si gentiment et délicatement encouragés à trouver de la joie et du réconfort tout en faisant collectivement notre deuil.

À titre de présidente, j’ai le privilège d’être d’office membre de tous les comités ainsi que du Conseil d’administration. J’ai donc été à même de constater, presque quotidiennement, l’incroyable dévouement en temps et en générosité de la part de nos bénévoles, de nos employés et des membres de notre clergé. En période difficile comme facile, ils donnent le meilleur d’eux-mêmes afin de s’assurer que le Temple puisse continuer à répondre aux besoins des membres de la congrégation. Pour cela, nous sommes vraiment bénis et nous devrions en être reconnaissants.

Puisque mon mandat, de deux ans, se termine à la fin du printemps, j’aimerais vous remercier sincèrement de m’avoir fait confiance. Ce fut un grand honneur d’être votre présidente.

This year is a leap year. That means we add an entire month to the calendar, so that we have two months of Adar. Purim, which falls in Adar, moves to the 14th

day of Adar II. Is there a holiday in Adar I?

For some cities, indeed there is. The 14th of Adar I is called Purim Katan, Little Purim. It is a holiday reserved for cities whose Jews have known a miraculous rescue. Sadly, too many such cities exist, and too many of those cities and towns no longer have Jews in them to celebrate.

Still, I wonder if we ought to rethink Purim Katan. Instead of seeing it as a day to commemorate the rescue of an entire community, maybe we ought to look at it as a time when we offer a personal celebration.

Over the years, I’ve seen that a good number of us have, individually, had miraculous rescues. For some, medicine and its practitioners saved them from an untimely end. For others, the intervention of a friend, a spouse, family member, or a teacher made all the difference, rescuing them from the pitfalls of everything from drugs to the wrong friends. Many can say that their therapist and yes, even their rabbi, made a quietly miraculous difference in their lives.

Jewish holidays begin at sunset, so Little Purim – Purim Katan – begins on the evening of Monday, the 18th of February. We only have Purim Katan 7 years out of 19, so take advantage of this date to celebrate the wonder that brought you added life. You can thank the person(s) who helped you, but above all, thank the Eternal One and do something truly enjoyable that day to celebrate. After all, Purim is a time to party. So, on Little Purim, at least a little partying wouldn’t hurt, right?

They say it takes a village to raise a child. Here at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, we believe it also takes a synagogue! We see our synagogue community as a

way to raise children with warm connections and strong values.

Becoming bar/bat mitzvah is one of the most meaningful experiences of Jewish life. One of the best pieces of wisdom around parenting is that the days are long, but the years are short. We want to help you look ahead towards this milestone in your family’s life.

If you are considering bar/bat mitzvah for your child(ren), we encourage you to consider enrolling in our Torah School program. even though the school year has begun, we will welcome your child at any time during the year, (and we will pro-rate the tuition). We are strong advocates of inclusion, and work with every family individually to help find what works best for their child. At the same time, we believe in the importance of a communal program and a classroom environment, rather than private learning. We believe that giving our children the gift of community will help them form their identities, and become adults who feel connected and who give back.

Torah School meets on Saturday mornings from 10 AM to 12:30 PM during the school year. The children learn about Jewish holidays, Jewish values, basic Bible stories, Hebrew, and more. The more years your child spends in Torah School prior to beginning bar/bat mitzvah preparation, the easier it is for everyone. The children know how to read Hebrew; they are comfortable at the synagogue, and your family is integrated into the Torah School and Temple family. In addition, families whose children begin Torah School in grade 5 or earlier, pay a lower Bar/Bat Mitzvah fee (which covers private tutoring for the individual part of the preparation).

I am available to speak with you about Torah School and/or our Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, and Rabbi Grushcow would be happy to discuss your connection with Temple and answer any questions you may have. In addition, your children are welcome to try out Torah School for a week or two before you make a firm commitment.

Ilanot: Trees in Israeli Songs Sermon in Song with Noa Haran, Interim Cantorial Soloist.Friday, January 18 | 7:45 pmTwo days before the Israeli celebration of Tu B'Shvat (also called “New Year of the trees”), we will listen to beautiful Israeli songs featuring the typical trees of the land of Israel. Israeli born musician Noa Haran will give some background about the songs, and discuss the role of trees in Hebrew poems.

Muslim Awareness ShabbatFriday, January 25 | 7:45 pmAs part of Muslim Awareness Week and to commemorate two years since the shooting at the Quebec City mosque, Temple welcomes guest speakers, Amani Shakhtour and Ahab Lotayef. Amani was born in Palestine and arrived in Montreal at the age of four. She has a degree in languages and has mastered Spanish, English, and

French and some basic Hebrew. She is currently at Concordia majoring in Community, Society, and Public Affairs and minoring in Global Migration.

Ehab Lotayef is a Canadian engineer, poet, writer, and community activist. He moved to Canada from Egypt 1989. Ehab is a founding member and long time participant in Arab-Jewish dialogue groups in Montreal. Shabbaton with Rabbi Amy SmallFriday, FeBruary 15 and SaTurday, FeBruary 16 Rabbi Amy Joy Small has been the Senior Rabbi of Ohavi Zedek Synagogue in Burlington, Vermont since 2016. Rabbi Small has served congregations in New Jersey, Michigan, and Indiana. She was a Senior Rabbinic Fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. She was ordained from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 1987.

While Rabbi Small is here, Rabbi Grushcow will be Rabbi-in-Residence at Temple Sinai in Pittsburgh and Rabbi Greenspan will be in Israel. In March, Rabbi Grushcow will be at Rabbi Small's synagogue in Burlington.

Rabbi Stephen A. Leon was born in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and was ordained by the Academy for Jewish Religion. From 1986 to the present, Rabbi Leon has been the spiritual leader of Congregation B’nai Zion in El Paso, Texas. Rabbi Leon has visited many places in Europe where Crypto-Jews have lived, including Belmont, Portugal where 300 Crypto-Jews formally returned to Judaism. Rabbi Leon is a trusted friend and teacher of the Anusim (Crypto-Jews/conversos) and has helped many individuals and families make their return to Judaism.

MoFTY: Temple's Youth GroupMoFTY is open to students from grade 8 through grade 12; we offer many

opportunities for our teens to gather. From Shul-ins and Laser Tag; to volunteering at a local soup kitchen and helping at the Temple Purim Carnival, there is something for everyone! We also participate in NFTY, the North American Federation of Temple Youth, as a member of the Northeast Lakes Region. Several times a year, interested MoFTY-ites have the opportunity to participate in regional events that enable them to meet Reform Jewish teens from Toronto, Ottawa, Cleveland, and Buffalo.

The Museum has received a generous anonymous donation of a silver presentation

box made by Carl Poul Peterson, a renowned Danish-Canadian Silversmith. The box was originally presented to Kenneth Wolfe's grandfather Louis Wolfe, past president of Temple Emanu-El in 1944, as a testimonial of appreciation from the Board of Trustees.

The box is hallmarked PP, it has a stylized flower finial on the cover and it is wood lined.

I attend Academie Sainte-Anne.What I loved the most about preparing for my Bar

Mitzvah was learning with my tutor. One important lesson I learned from my Bar Mitzvah studies is that I am capable

of amazing things, like learning Hebrew and singing ancient blessings from 5000 years ago.

If there is one mitzvah, commandment, that I would emphasize in my Jewish life it is the sixth commandment: "You Shall Not Murder". I am choosing this commandment because it is something that no one should do and it seems to be one of the most important commandments.

Having a Bar Mitzvah is important to me because it is an important Jewish tradition. Also, because my family is Jewish and it will make them proud of me.

My favourite subject at school is Gym Class. My favourite hobby is playing with my neighbours outside and playing basketball wtih them. I like reading books such as Garfield and Big Nate.

Something I want the congregation to know about me is that I traveled from South Korea to Canada when I was 4 months old when I was adopted by my parents.

I plan to give Tzedakah to the biggest hospital in Canada, the “super hospital,” because they are a good organization who have helped and saved peoples lives.

Having a Bat Mitzvah is important to me because it marks my rite of passage into adulthood and feels empowering. What I liked most about preparing for my Bat Mitzvah was discovering the meaning of and the facts surrounding my

Torah portion. One important lesson I learned from my Bat Mitzvah studies is that being patient is more likely to help you do the right thing.

One mitzvah, commandment, that I would emphasize in my Jewish life, that is treating others as you would treat yourself allows you to stay true to who you are and eventually opens the door to friendships that really matter.

Something I want the congregation to know about me is that you can count on me to give 100% of myself to my commitments. I am very grounded in what matters most and fairness. I am happiest in the great outdoors.

My favourite hobby is playing music - piano, drums, bass, vocals - I love it all. I attend Solomon Schechter Academy in Montreal.

I would like to give Tzedakah to Rock Camp for Girls which fosters self-esteem, skill-building, and critical thinking skills for girls and gender non-conforming youth through collaborative music composition and performance.

I go to Royal West Academy in Montreal West. I enjoyed preparing for my Bar Mitzvah, and my favourite part was learning the melodies for my Torah portion. An important lesson I learned is that practice, and practice, and more

practice makes perfect. Hopefully. Even though it was an interesting process, it was hard. I spent countless hours studying and practising, but it was worth it so I can continue to carry forward a Jewish tradition. One mitzvah I would like to emphasize in my Jewish life is giving Tzedakah. I would especially like to support the NDG Food Depot, as they give people the essentials: food.

My favourite subject at school is math, and I play hockey, baseball, tennis, and volleyball. I love to read, and I also play guitar, piano, and ukulele.
