Another step from oneWashington County administrationto another was completed Dec. 10.

Current Washington CountyAdministrative Coordinator Doug Johnson provided his final report tothe County Board. Johnson will bestepping down from the post withinthe next few weeks. JoshuaSchoemann, current village ofRichfield administrator, will begin asWashington County Manager in January.

This has been a year whereweve been very intent on still doingthe work but preparing for some def-inite changes, Johnson said.

Johnson, who had nine days onthe job at the time he gave thereport, noted that life keeps hap-pening and he working with thesearch team to fill the vacant med-ical examiner position, with moreinterviews to occur that week.

We really havent gone intoany kind of long pause here, wellbe working hard for the next coupleof weeks, the holiday breaks willcome and Josh will be stepping inthe leadership team and the boardand its committees to continue thework, Johnson said.

Johnson said the transition isorderly and describedSchoemann as an energetic andcapable county manager thatwants the job and has the ability todo it.

Johnson recalled that he hasbeen involved with the transition ofstaff in the financial and legaldepartments, and added thatSchoemann will be aided by currentstaff as part of the transition at thetop.

Using the previous weekendstraffic accidents on snow-coveredroads as a metaphor, Johnson saidthat as the board goes through thenext year you need to drive for theconditions. You need to be a littlepatient, youre going to have a newperson in that administration depart-ment.

He said the administration is ingood shape overall but suggestedthe board take a pause on someissues as part of the transition.

In the written report submitted tothe board, Johnson noted that withinthe past year vacancies and subse-quent changes have occurred in theHighway Department, CountyTreasurer, Human Resources,Samaritan Health Center and theMedical Examiner. The HumanResources director position will be

posted in January, with the search tobe led by Schoemann.

Among the additional effortswithin the past year cited in the writ-ten report are:

The holidays have arrived. Let the shop-ping begin! And so it begins' the days anddays of shopping on end for the perfect giftfor each and every person on your list. You're all gung-ho at first with the best ofintentions, but as the days whittle down andyou realize you haven't gotten very far onyour list, the goal of purchasing the perfectgift flies out the door and almost anythingwill do. What a pity! We've all been there, done that, but this year, it doesn't have to bethat way. You can change your stripes, startshopping early and get the perfect gift foreveryone on your list. Here are some point-ers.

Less is more When it comes gift giving, more is not always best. You don't have tobreak the bank and buy the recipient every-thing they ask for. One or two gifts of THEIRchoosing will suffice. That's right-THEIRchoosing. It is a gift for them, not you, so buywhat they ask for, and if they didn't make any

requests, buy what suits their needs andwants, not yours.

Budget matters There is no need to godeep into debt with your holiday shopping. Ifthe recipient has a request out of your pricerange, find someone to split the cost with orfind another gift to buy. The recipient willunderstand, and if they don't, oh well. It'syour bottom line. You don't want to be pay-ing for something for someone else long intothe new year.

Selectivity is key Don't buy the first thingyou come across. Take the time to shoparound and check out the merchandise.Make sure the gift you choose meets therecipient's qualifications and will last for along time. Should additional services orproducts be offered, consider them carefully. The extended warranty may not be as bene-ficial as the accessories package.

Presentation counts The right gift willmean little with sloppy packaging. Select anice gift wrap or bag, wrap the gif t with care

You're not much of a shopper, which mayexplain why you put off the purchase ofChristmas gifts until the last minute. Yep, you'reone of those last-minute shoppers delvingthrough the leftovers on store shelves onChristmas Eve. This year, you're changingyour ways. Here are some tips to ensureyou're successful.

Research beforehandWhile some people may tell you exactly

what they want, others won't have any ideaand leave the choosing to you. Find outahead of time what recipients like, want andneed, and do some online shopping to seewhat's out that there might suit them.

Start earlySome people start their shopping the day

after Christmas. You may not be able to gothat far, but you can certainly be on the look-out for good deals throughout the year. Younever know when one might pop up, and theearlier you start your shopping, the better thesavings and selection will be. You might alsoget finished sooner!

Make a listDon't go shopping without an

what you need to buy. This will leapurchases and an empty wallet iDetermine beforehand whom you nfor, what you need to buy them andyou intend to spend on them.

Be selectiveAnyone can pick out a gift foTo make your gifts special, you nthought into what you buy and takepersonalize each and every gift, eihandwritten note or some other torecipient know why you selecteddid, and when possible, make it monograms, photos and such.

Present with careAfter all the time you put in sh

don't want to stuff your gifts intdrop them at recipients' feet. They how much effort you put into thprocess and their reaction may shothe time to wrap your gifts beawatch them get opened. The sreceive will make all of the effort

    Be a better shopper

and attach a bow or ribbon and a gift tag.Got a gift card instead? Purchase a card, envelope or gift bag or box to put it in. Proveto the recipient that you took the time tomake the presentation of the gift attractive-whatever it may be.

Delivery is everything Find a good timeto deliver the gift when the recipient will beable to appreciate it. This could be at lunch,

a party or an after-hours gatherican't find a convenient time, do n Just drop the gift off and tell the enjoy!

Finding the perfect gift takeforth the effort, and it will not goWhen all is said and done, the giftbeen hand selected and wrapped will be the ones remembered! Thgifts from the heart after all.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Today's column is about oral cancer. One of our wonderfulpatients was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is undergoingsurgery, chemotherapy and radiation and we send our prayersfor a speedy and full recovery! It is important to remind ourreadership about one of the many important reasons to seetheir dentist regularly.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral orpharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths.

Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head andneck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% of

cases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chanceof spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cellcarcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makesoral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appearsas a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancercell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as aresult of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repairthemselves.

Where can oral cancer appear in my mouth?Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue.

It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arisefrom many types of tissue in the mouth including salivaryglands and lymph tissue.

What should I look for?Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does

not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesionon the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually palecolored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An earlywarning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or ared patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues of the mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when thetumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongueproblems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain maybe a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless.

How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not?A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion.

However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benignand malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A non-invasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out thepresence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method fordetermining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present isthrough biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopicevaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous.

What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determinedto be cancerous?

Often times, all that is necessary is for a small sugical

incision to be made to remove the lesion fromquestion. Radiation with or without chemotherbe used in conjunction depending on the severitsize of the lesion.
