1.0 Purpose and Scope

1.1 This procedure describes the process for cleaning and maintaining the equipment used for harvesting produce.

1.2 This procedure is used before the harvesting season begins, daily, and as needed.

2.0 Responsibilities

2.1 The Person in Charge (PIC) is responsible for ensuring that equipment is kept clean and in good repair.

2.2 The PIC is responsible for having all repairs made in a timely manner.

2.3 The PIC is responsible for ensuring that this procedure is followed, including use of the Harvest Equipment Cleaning and Maintenance Logbook for recording all cleaning and maintenance.

3.0 Equipment

3.1 Hot water pressure sprayer.

3.2 Harvesting containers, such as buckets, plastic boxes, and crates, that are reserved only for produce use.

4.0 Instructions

4.1 Annual: Before the harvest season begins, check all harvesting equipment for needed repairs. The PIC will make sure that all repairs are completed. Clean all harvesting equipment using the hot water pressure washer.

4.1.1 The water must be heated to a minimum of 100° F.

4.2 Pre-operation: Each day, check and wash the tractors. Each week, wash all planting, tilling, and harvesting equipment. Clean between crops as directed by PIC.

4.3 In-process: If a strange sound occurs while the machinery is being operated or any damage to the equipment is noticed, stop work immediately. Alert the PIC to the problem. The PIC will find the problem and determine the appropriate actions. The PIC will arrange for any needed repairs.

4.4 Before being used, all re-usable containers for produce must be washed according to the Packaging Facility and Equipment Cleaning Procedure. After each use, wash, sanitize, and air dry them.

4.5 Record the date and cleaning or maintenance actions taken in the Harvest Equipment Cleaning and Maintenance Logbook. Date and initial the logbook entry.
