One's Life Story is a long history of repetitions — meals cooked, floors mopped, miles driven, books read, letters written, boo-booskissed, lullabies sung, tears shed, presents made, laughter shared, gar-dens planted, mountains climbed, campfires sung-around, gamesattended, and concerts, and plays, babies conceived, and birthed andmarried off, loved ones nursed, and buried, and mourned...in 77 years--about 527 million, 472 thousand breaths of loving, fearing, hoping— of striving, failing, succeeding. And too often, bearing unbearablepain and somehow, prevailing.

All of these moments are punctuated periodically with the stuff wewant to be remembered for. This is my partial list since high school:

Married a dashing, young Army Air Corps Officer—1948Persuaded the obstetrician to defy hospital rules and allow David to be present for my last 4 deliver-ies--1957, 1961,1963 and 1966.Delivered 9 babies without anesthetic. 1950's and '60's. Now have 27 wonderful grandchildren, 4greats. Was invited into the delivery room for the births of a 3rd and a 4h generation baby.Returned to college around 1965 and earned bachelor and master's degrees — 1975 and 1981.Only middle aged person in my undergraduate classes.Designed and built a modernistic house in a conventional neighborhood—had to persuade themortgage company to take a big risk — 1957.Ordained an Elder in Presbyterian Church. Was a life guard and swimming teacher. Taught my babies to swim.Sang around the piano with the kids. Four generations harmonize around the campfire with 6 gui-tar players now at their annual Rendezvous. The Joy of My Life.Persuaded the kids to build a plain pine box and line it with velvet to bury their father in. Exquisite.Treasured memory. Cost $250. 1992.Was featured in an art show _ “Art on the River.” Moncure Conway House, Falmouth, VA . 2002.Had a standing ovation for “being brave” and playing the piano for about 500 people. 2003Started Ballroom Dancing, age 72. Won 41 first places in my first competition — age 76, 2005.Raised 9 responsible, loving, successful, musical offspring. Even have a few PhDs, coaches, scoutleaders, Sunday school teachers in there.Inducted into the Ronald W. Lindemann Hall-of-Fame. 2006.Life doesn't get much better than this!!!
