Have you checked your stearic acid's color stability lately?

A sure test for measuring stearic acid quality is color stability. Variations from shipment to shipment often indicate com­position or process inconsisten­cies which adversely affect quality of stearic derivatives. In Emery's Emersol® 132 USP lily® Stearic Acid, for example, quality is maintained from purchase of feedstock through delivery of finished product. Even after Emery's rigorous heat stability test, Emersol 132 registers a mean of 77.3% trans­mission at 440 nm — about the color of light straw — with a batch-to-batch standard deviation of 4.2% transmission. With consumer pre­ference for pork increasing over more expensive beef products,

the production of local tallows high in undesirable unsaturates is becoming prevalent. Another cost pressure is the trend by beef producers to trim feedstock on their premises and pass tallow shipment costs on to manufacturers. It's tempting for a stearic acid producer to com­pensate by sacrificing feedstock quality or by taking processing shortcuts. Emery buys better, processes better, tests better.
