Great Aloha Run
Sunday before The Great Aloha Run, I was reading what Carole Kai wrote about the experiences they had during the first Great Aloha Run 30 years ago - with wind and rain making the organizers ner-vous, it cleared up and the inaugural event went off without a hitch.
A few hours later I was heading in towards the start and...it was windy and rainy. The runners stayed dry for the most part until later in the race, and it was great conditions for the 30th. version of The Great Aloha Run.
In front Polina Carlson and Thomas Puzey led the 20.000+ runners from Aloha Tower to Aloha Sta-dium with convincing wins. The Great Aloha Run is a reminder of why we do what we do...participating in races, organizing races, and sharing informa-tion with athletes so that we can create a healthy society with great experiences for all levels and abilities.
Now it is time to plan the rest of the year, there are many exciting events to participate in, they will help you keep the training up and stay motivated.
Happy Training

Running ClothesWo m e n ’s specific triathlon and
endurance running apparelCost: Top $35, Bottom $48
Reviewed by: Zara NguyenAvailable at: BOCA Hawaii

I had an extremely good time testingout this product. The material looksextremely cute and feminine but I wasnot sure if it could withstand a long run.I went out on my weekly long run, closed my eyes and decided to take arisk wearing these new items. SoasRacing graciously sent me a pair oftheir cutest running apparel and I want-ed to show them off! This particularweek, I was scheduled for a 17 miler.
PROS:
1) Both the top and bottom held outgreat for my long run. The shorts didnot ride up or bunch up between mylegs at all. The top felt very lightweightthroughout the run, it breathed welland it felt incredibly comfortable.
2) The singlet top is conservative andloose fitted, flattering the body withouthighlighting any bit of unwanted extrafat. The top well compliments aw o m a n ’s body shape.
3) The bottom is also conserv a t i v e .The material in the back is longer thanthe front. This is perfect for those witha little extra in the trunk who want amore conservative covering and donot want their behind exposed whenbending over to stretch.
CONS:
1) These shorts may not be ideal forrunners whose bottoms are flatterthan average. Due to the extra materi-al in the back, the bikini style liner mayhang a little.
I would definitely recommend thisp r o d u c t :
1) At $35 for the top and $38 for thebottom, the cost is very reasonable forv e ry high quality running apparel.
2) It is really hard for me to find cuteand feminine workout clothes that isalso functional. I am glad Soas Racingcan provide this missing link!

The year is 1985. I’m teaching a holistic healthclass to the sophomores at Punahou School. A p o r-tion of the curriculum involved fitness – namely, asix–lap run for time. A girl shows up in street clothes with an excusenot to run. Whether the excuse was valid, I don’tk n o w, but I approve it, and the run and life go on.Fast forward to 2014 and the girl is back in mylife. She is transformed completely — fit, extremely hip and she doesn’t own an excuse, legitimate or otherwise. The girl is Karen Elizaga, executive coach, author,a t t o r n e y, wife and the mother of two beautiful chil-dren. Through her book, and more important herpresence, she brings a gift. It is a blueprint for liv-ing a process that involves hard work, throughwhich arises an improved sense of self — aprocess that allows us, as the book’s titledescribes, to “Find Your Sweet Spot!”
The sweet spot: A place where we are able to findclarity for what we want, the confidence toachieve it, the complete health that radiates fromit, the acceptance to embrace challenges, theenthusiasm and endurance to find joy in hard-ship… and be grateful for the experience throughit all!K a r e n ’s process, which she formulated over thecourse of her career and personal development, isdeep and meaningful. Following an elite educationand misguided career as a lawyer, she accessed herinner truth and ultimately cultivated the security topursue the work that nurtures her completely, andthe courage to create a marriage that works. NowKaren enjoys a family that has fun together,
extreme fitness, and the capacity to create anabundance of all things important and significant. In the words of the poet Mark Repo, Karen haslearned to “live with things and not in front ofthem.” She has the energy to be present eachmoment in her daily life, her own personaltriathlon. Her version of the swim–bike–run isbroken down into family–work–energ y.Somehow Karen has gone from resisting physicalactivity to embracing it, thereby creating the ener-gy necessary to be a loving wife and mom, listento her clients, write and promote her book and livethe lifestyle that allows her to have the strengthand endurance to do it all again tomorrow. At the core of her lifestyle are the five basic truths:Talk nicely to yourself, eat clean, embrace chal-lenges, push through resistance and be present foryour life.
POSITIVE SELF–TA L KKaren has eliminated the negative self–talk thatcreates resistance to being present and stiflesgrowth. She says, “For so many years, I endured avery negative mindset. Because I wanted perfec-tion in so many ways, I shied away from risk andwas never enough. A n dI never let myself forget that.” Now, Karen feelstotally liberated. As she counsels her clients, shestrives for excellence, rather than perfection, inevery pursuit. She talks herself through withencouraging words throughout the process. Wi t hthis adapted mindset, she can take on risk andtherefore enjoy new adventures.
E AT C L E A NKaren is able to choose each moment to focus ontraining for energy: to maintain a lifestyle basedon consuming the right amount of healthy foodsand fluids, getting the right amount sleep, and liv-ing the life of an elite athlete. Each activity is care-fully considered in terms of the energy required tomaintain just the right balance of work and play, rest and relaxation. Karen says, “I never realizedhow much the quality of my food and nutrition, aswell as my physical activity and rest, affected myperformance and mind-set. Even with my elitecorporate executive clients, we focus on food, sleep and exercise.”
EMBRACE CHALLENGES
Karen has worked hard to cultivate the confidenceto accept challenges while maintaining her abilityto enjoy the moment. She finds satisfaction fromher efforts and expresses her passion for the com-pletion of the task at hand: “In writing my book Isimply saw it done. I knew it was inevitable, soeven in the face of challenges, I kept plugginga w a y. I took criticism and used it to make mywork product better. And it got done!”
PUSH THROUGH RESISTA N C EK a r e n ’s seemingly endless supply of enthusiasmcomes from her ability to debrief and reframe neg-ative emotions and experiences in her life into pos-itive sources of energ y. Her free–spirited nature isgrounded in her creative approach to resolvingissues and achieving excellent results. “I used toget discouraged – stymied, really – by negativeemotions and experiences. Now, I have a totallyd i fferent outlook. I figure out what I can learn, allow myself the opportunity to feel and pushthrough whatever negativity I have, and then lookforward to the next thing.”
BE PRESENTKaren is “old school” in that she is disciplined andworks hard. She is “new age” in that she uses pur-poseful breath and practices gratitude as she goesthrough unpleasant experiences. All of this addsup to her ability to be so completely present and totake on the amazing adventure that is her life. “Iam truly grateful to have learned techniques thatenhance my every day. They may seem hokey tosome (I will admit that was my first reaction), butmy life is so much better because of the ‘new age-y ’ s t u ff ! ”

HILEVEL PROFILE
Karen Elizaga
K a r e n ’s client base is largely in New York City, where she has had incredible results workingwith corporate executives. Despite the geo-graphical differences, we employ many of thesame tools and techniques. Namely, the Powerof Appreciation (Wanting to be present, embrac-ing challenges and being grateful) and the Needto Adjust: (Performance breathing, positiveself–talk, visualization, debrief and reframe). Inreview of Karen’s book and her history of suc-cess, I’m proud of her accomplishments andextremely grateful for the healthy example shesets for us all.

Aloha everyone. We are just a few months into2014 and studies show that motivation starts towane just about now. Never fear, just step back, take a deep breath and know you are exactlywhere you are supposed to be. It is time to giveyourself a break and renew those goals. Our firstquestion here deals with just that – how do I staymotivated?
How do I stay motivated? That is a fantasticquestion and for most of us our focus ebbs andflows depending on the amount of external stressgoing on in our lives. There are many strategiesthat can help us stay on track. Find a group.Group training provides accountability. Whenyou’ve got people waiting on you for a workout ithelps keep you on task. Furthermore, a groupprovides additional energy and challenge for yourworkout. Write it down. Benjamin Franklin wrotehis goals on a piece of paper and looked at themevery day. When your goal is in the front of yourmind, it helps you to stay focused on target. Youcan write it on a paper like Ben did and stick to
your computer, refrigerator, somewhere in yourcar or your bedside clock. Somewhere you willlook often every day. Create a vision board. Cutout pictures and phrases from magazines thatbest relate to your goal and glue them to any sizepiece of paper. This is an awesome way to getthat visual in your mind. The more clear you canbe with your goal – how will if feel when I achieve(insert goal), what will it look like, taste like, sound like. Really get specific. Telling a friend, finding a group or committing your goal to writ-ing or pictures is a great way to stay on track andstay motivated.
What diet is best? Last month we looked at
yogurt as being a wonderful addition to a goodnutrition. I’m currently doing a greek yogurt chal-lenge so check out my facebook for updates. Nowthen, studies show that all diets are equally affec-tive for losing weight provided you follow themconsistently. Yes, it’s true. The caveat here is thatnot all diets are equally nutritious. The trick isfinding the diet that is right for you and yourlifestyle. For example, Jenny Craig and NutriSystems deliver pre-packaged food convenientlyto your door. How easy is that? Easy, but good foryou …maybe not. Any food that contains morethan 5 ingredients and ingredients that you don’teven know how to pronounce is probably not thatgreat. Furthermore, your body has to break downall this processed mess and in the end the nutri-tion left for energy and critical body functions isminiscule. Your best bet is to stick to whole foods(fruits, vegetables, whole grains, water). Onceeaten, these foods are more readily absorbed andcan be utilized by your body for optimal health. Awhole foods diet is your best bet. It may take a bitmore planning and preparation on your part, butyou will see the benefits in your energy level fordaily activities and athlete performances.
Cardio vs. weight lifting, which is better? Ah, theever eternal question. There was a great article inWomen’s Health that addressed this very ques-tion. Whatever your goal is, both are beneficial foroptimal health. Whether you want to run amarathon, look great naked or just reduce yourstress, head to head here are the results of thatstudy:
EXCESS FAT
If you are just trying to get rid of excess fat, strength training has the advantage. Althoughyou burn 8 to 10 calories a minute lifting weights, your will burn 10 to 12 per minute running orcycling and of course that depends on how much
weight you lift or how fast, how far or how steepa hill you run. The big difference, according toWayne Westcott, Ph.D., "for every 3 pounds ofmuscle you build, you'll burn an extra 120 calo-ries a day -- just vegging -- because muscle takesmore energy to sustain." Westcott confirms that“over the course of a year, that's about 10 poundsof fat -- without even changing your diet.”
STRESS
When it comes to relieving stress, cardio has theedge here. According to a 2005 study in theEuropean Journal of Sports Science, the head-clearing effects of swimming or playing tennis, for example, show up faster than it takes to get abrow wax. Just 15 minutes of aerobic activity twoto three times a week can reduce anxiety signifi-c a n t l y, according to Madhukar Trivedi, M.D.,director of the University of Texas SouthwesternMedical Center Mood Disorders Researc hProgram and Clinic. Madhukar goes on to saythat if you engage in cardio activities 3 to 5 daysa week and you can cut fatigue by nearly 50 per-cent. "Cardio elevates serotonin levels in thebrain, a key neurotransmitter involved in improv-ing symptoms of depression," Madhukar Trivedi,M.D. added.
INJURY PREVENTION
And finally, when it comes to staying injury free itis a little closer battle, but strength edges out car-dio slightly.
Cardio’s edge is its repetitive nature. Cardio putsserious pressure on your joints, ligaments, mus-cles, tendons -- and the cartilage in between. Ifyou've got a weak link, you could get injured, unless you hit the weight room.
Strength's edge comes from its balance enhance-ment. In a 2006 study in the American Journalof Sports Medicine, researchers found that a bal-ance-training program -- think single-leg squatsand anything on a wobble board -- reduced therisk of ankle sprains in athletes. "Functionalstrength training teaches your brain to allowmuscle contractions that are quick enough to pre-vent or minimize injuries," says lead study authorTim McGuine, Ph.D., senior athletic trainer andr e s e a rch coordinator at the University ofWisconsin-Madison. Your best bet is to choosemoves that work your core, improve your bal-ance, and force you to bend at multiple joints --so lunges, rows, squats, and presses are allexcellent choices. Thus the winner is strength.
Whether you want to lose weight, run faster orclimb Mount Everest, a personalized program isyour best bet in achieving those goals. The hardwork is always worth the effort in being success-ful. Let me know how I can help you with yourjourney and email any questions you may have to

Ask your JACO PT: THORACIC MOBILITY FOR ATHLETES
Q: What is thoracic mobility? A: The thoracic region of the spine includes the twelve vertebrae from your upper to mid back. Due to increased ligamentous attachments and struc-tures (i.e. your ribs), the thoracic spine tends to have less motion than the neck and low back. To make matters worse, many of us sit at a desk for work, which causes forward, rounded shoulders, and stiffness in the mid-back. For this reason, improving the mobility of your thoracic spine can be difficult.
Q: Why does thoracic spine stiffness cause injuries? A: Think of the spine like a chain: If certain segments aren’t moving enough, the segments above and below will make up for the lost motion. In this scenario, the neck/shoulders and low back tend to have increased mobility to make up for de-creased motion in the thoracic spine. The segments that are moving excessively are more prone to instability, which places athletes at risk for injury. Low back strains and fatigue, neck pain, and shoulder impingement are common injuries that can be prevented by increasing thoracic mobility.
Q. Why do athletes need thoracic mobility? A: Athletes need a moderate degree of thoracic mobility to allow them to rotate the trunk for activities like swimming and paddling. Activities such as running require an appropriate amount of shoulder blade and arm motion, which is more difficult with a stiff thoracic spine. Stiffness in this area places athletes at a high risk for neck, low back, and shoulder injuries.
Q: So what’s the solution? A: The foam roller is a great tool athletes can use to improve thoracic mobility. Do these three exercises every day to improve your thoracic range of motion and your posture!
Thoracic Rotation Stretch: Start on your hands and knees with the foam roller positioned lengthwise on the right side of your body. Keep both arms straight and reach your left hand under your right arm, placing the back of your hand on the foam roller. Rotate your trunk to the right and allow the foam roll to assist your motion. Hold 5-10 seconds and repeat 10-15 times. Repeat on your left side.
Thoracic Extension Stretch: Place the foam roller under your upper back. Keep your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Place your hands behind your head to support your neck. Keep your okole on the ground and let your head fall towards the floor as you exhale, then come back up to the starting position as you inhale. Repeat 10-15 times.
Chest Opener: Lie lengthwise on the foam roller with your feet flat on the ground. Keep your arms straight and let them fall out to horizontally toward the ground. Hold 30 seconds.
Bring a copy of this article into the new and improved JACO Rehab clinic located at 1401 S. Beretania St., Suite 550 and receive 5$ off a foam roller! Happy stretching! Catherine Cullison, PT, DPT

Upcoming: The Honolulu TriathlonThe First Honolulu Triathlon was held in 2004 where top athletesfrom around the nation participated and the winners went onqualifying for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team, representing ourcountry in Athens, Greece during the 2004 Olympics.
At first, this might sound like an event only for professional athletes, but in fact the Honolulu Triathlon also attracts manypeople who never tried a triathlon before.
Compared to the Ironman distance (3.8K Swim/180k bike/42KRun), our event focuses on the Olympic distance (1.5KSwim/40K Bike/10K Run) and Sprint distance (750m Swim/20KBike/5K Run). We also include a Kids Triathlon and a 10K/5K run.
How about a refreshing swim, bike ride along the shore, followed by a nice stroll through the park?
Our participants will not be overburdened with the harshness ofan endurance race, but rather challenge themselves to trysomething new. The most important thing is that you try!
Bring your family and friends to this truly unique Festival ofSports and participate in one of our many races. Give it a try;you will not regret it!
See you at the finish line!
