Colony Plaza

The Villages, Florida—The lighthouse facade atop the Colony Plaza Shop-ping Center , built in the vein of old Key West, reaches a zenith of about 53 feet. The figurative beacon is a highlight of the 130,000-square-foot retail center at the Morse Boulevard extension at County Road 466A.

The project, a joint venture of The Villages and St. Petersburg’s Sembler Company is anchored by a Publix Supermarket. This project incorporates the best of The Villages’ architectural design standards. This project was built above most standards for neighborhood retail centers, but it’s the lighthouse facade that most consumers will notice first.

CVS/Health

Gainesville, Florida—Hawkins was chosen for the construction this new two-story CVS pharmacy with a brick facade and pedestrian plaza at Southwest 13th Street and 16th Avenue in Gainesville, Florida. It opened a year after demolition began on the previous buildings on that corner. The driveway to the strip mall to the east was closed and a shared driveway opened along 16th Avenue.

Unlike the typical CVS design, the new store includes second-floor office space and a brick facade, similar to the store that Hawkins completed at 1515 NW 13th St. This CVS has a lot of window space, a landscaped pedestrian plaza with a shade structure and benches, wrought-iron fencing and brick retaining walls to meet city design standards for that area.

Art in Commercial Spaces

WINNER Gainesville, Florida—The building is a two-story brick and stucco structure that trans-forms a corner site that was formerly occupied by a service station and restaurants. CVS/pharmacy occupies the first floor and mezzanine level, designating office space for the second floor. The store has dual entries from the street corner and interior parking area. The second floor is accessible from a separate vestibule off the parking lot and secondary entrance from street side. The structure is situated close to North-west 13th Street, and has a tree landscaped pedestrian path. The structure is consid-ered “street-scaped” and utilizes window art from a local art competition.

The 16 panels of art located in the ground floor windows were designed around the theme of “Helping Our Community.” The concept stems from various aspects of CVS customers physically and metaphorically exchanging ideas about personal and com-munity needs. In other words, as the store becomes an important part of the sur-rounding neighborhood, the store’s identity is shaped by those who use it. Although the store provides pharmaceutical and other essential personal items, it also has an important visual presence in the community. The project was coordinated with CVS, the City of Gainesville’s Planning Division and Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, and Art in Public Places Trust.

Pedestrians will be able to en-ter the store on the shopping level.

Real estate constraints at the site resulted in the store's vertical design. Hawkins has also completed a boat dock at the store for customers arriving by boat.

Bishop Larkin Catholic School

Port Richey, Florida—This simple but aesthetically pleasing 43,000 SF elementary school for the Diocese of St. Peters-burg provides an economical school facility for elementary, middle, and day school functions. Constructed using the Construction Management Team Approach with Alexander and Associates, this project team was able to maximize its "bang for the buck.”

A project design was created that incorporates high quality and durable construction materials and methods into a highly functioning facility. This was realized at costs well below what the public sector typically pays for facilities of this caliber. This project has since been used on several other projects as a prototype design scheme.

Notre Dame Inter-parochial School

Spring Hill, Florida—This project was constructed for the Diocese of St. Petersburg using the Construction Manage-ment delivery system. It encompassed a 17,000 SF multi-purpose building and a 13,000 SF classroom facility.

During construction an adjacent elementary and middle school held classes. Care and concern for the safety of the pupils were of the highest priority. The extensive pre-construction services yielded high quality construction such as copper gutters and down spouts, while maintaining a tight budget. Over 90 value-engineering alternates were ad-dressed, in which over 30 were incorporated into the contract documents.

Palm Harbor United Methodist Church

Palm Harbor, Florida—With over 2000 members, Palm Harbor United Methodist Church is one of the fastest growing churches in Pinellas County. When they found the need for a new 24,000 SF sanctuary, they chose Hawkins Construc-tion, Inc.

Hawkins Construction was able to propose more cost effective and durable systems, and help guide the construction techniques while obtaining the congregation's overall goals of the facility. One major obstacle that was handled flaw-lessly was Hawkins' ability to work around an active day care center, pre-school and church campus, 7 days a week.

St. Frances Calibrini Church

Spring Hill, Florida—This project exhibited how well Haw-kins Construction can coordinate and communicate with a parish. Hawkins was employed to renovate this church, including removing the glass skylight roof, while allowing the parish to continue to hold their services. To make things even more of a challenge, the work was performed during the rainy season.

Hawkins devised special temporary roofing systems to prevent the existing interior finishes from being damaged during construction. After the roof replacement, construc-tion continued with the 16,126 SF interior renovation neces-sary to correct the years of water damage. This project was constructed ahead of schedule and under budget utilizing the Construction Management approach.

Snell Isle, Florida—This is one of many projects that the Di-ocese of St. Petersburg has chosen Hawkins Construction to manage.

This new 28,000 SF facility was constructed in the beautiful Snell Isle area of St. Petersburg and was designed to blend in with the neighborhood. Site improvements to the existing facility were also completed.

This project endured the 2004 Hurricane season and was com-pleted on schedule for its June 2005 dedication.

St. Timohty Catholic Church

Tampa, Florida— St. Timothy's Catholic Church included a new 32,000 SF monumental sanctuary, a 20,000 SF parish hall and over 14 acres of campus site improvements. This project was the largest campus worship center constructed by the Diocese of St. Peters-burg in over 10 years.

The conceptual design for this project came in at $2.5 million over budget. Hawkins Construction's input during the pre-construction phase was able to guide and direct the design and systems to obtain the Diocese's tight budget constraints on this project. In the process, Hawkins Construction was able to propose more cost effective and durable systems, and help guide the size and construction techniques while obtaining the parish's over all goals of the facility.

Tampa Catholic High School

Tampa, Florida— The Science and Technology Center is a High-Tech, 16,875 SF facility that was constructed for the Diocese of St. Petersburg using the Construc-tion Management delivery system.

It includes the Physics and Biology Departments, Computer Science labs, Media Center and offices. In addition, Hawkins reconfigured the main parking lot, con-structed a new Chapel and Palm Court in the Center of campus, and coordinated the relocation of student parking.

All of this took place in the middle of an active High School Campus where the safety of students and faculty was a top priority at all times.

Temple Terrace Church of Christ

Tampa, Florida— Hawkins Construction was selected as Construction Manager for this project which consists of a new Sanctuary and Classroom space totaling 22,000 SF.

The building footprint was discovered to be located over existing (not visible) sinkholes. It took close to 1,000 cubic yards of soil grout injection to remediate.
