Heritage Day is 1 of the newly created South African public holidays. It is a day in which all are encouraged to celebrate their cultural traditions in the wider context of the great diversity of cultures, beliefs, and traditions that make up the nation of South Africa.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the 24th of September was formerly known as Shaka Day, in commemoration of the legendary Zulu king, King Shaka Zulu. When the proposed Public Holidays Bill before the New South African Parliament omitted Shaka Day, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) objected to the bill. A compromise was reached when it was decided to create a day where all South Africans could observe and celebrate their diverse cultural heritage.

In the vein of celebrating shared culture rather than focusing on cultural divisions, a recent initiative by the Braai4Heritage calls upon all South Africans to celebrate their common roots by having a braai on Heritage day. The idea has had some high profile converts, the most notable being that of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who in 2007 was made the National Spokesperson for “Braai Day.”

Op Saterdag, 21 June 2014, het die praktyk van Alma de Wet Arbeidsterapeute ‘n suk-sesvolle skoolgereedheidseminaar aangebied.

Aktuele onderwerpe wat aangespreek is, was:1. Wat behels skoolgereedheid?2. Hoe word dit gemeet?3. Wat is die verwagtinge in die Gr 1 klaskamer?

Spraak- en Arbeidsterapeute het ook ’n belangrike bydrae gelewer ten opsigte van spraak, taal en luistergereedheid, asook die rol van die Arbeidsterapeut in die gereed-maakproses van die voorskoolse kind vir formele toetrede tot skool. Sprekers was Prof. Celia Bouwer, Dr. Susan le Roux, Dr. Frans de Jager, Mev. Chanel Naude en Mev. Alma de Wet.

Verskeie ander werkswinkels word beplan. Die werkswinkels sal gefokus wees om kur-susgangers te bemagtig wat op ‘n daaglikse basis insette lewer ten opsigte van kinders se ontwikkeling. Die werkswinkels sal aangebied word in die konferensiekamer by Alma de Wet Arbeidsterapeute.

In September 2014 sal ’n kursus aangebied word in die gebruik van ‘n gestandardiseerde toetsbattery om skoolgereedheid te evalueer en verdere werskwinkels sal in die loop van 2014 deur die arbeidsterapeute aangebied word.
